Local expert Chris Tracey teaches the art and science of dry stack stone wall building and restoration. Members: FREE. Nonmembers: $35 Pre-registration required. Bioreserve Big Walk Saturday, May 4 | 9am FREETOWN/FALL RIVER STATE FOREST HEADQUARTERS SLAB BRIDGE ROAD, ASSONET Strap on your hiking boots and experience the vastness of the unbroken forest on a walk that spans the full length of the 13,600-acre Bioreserve. The full hike is 12 miles, but pick-ups will be available every few miles along the way, and transportation will provided back to your car. Members & Nonmembers: FREE. Lyman Bird Walk Saturday, May 4 | 8am THEODORE LYMAN RESERVE 1009 HEAD OF THE BAY ROAD, BUZZARDS BAY Join us as we search for birds during their migration north along Buttermilk Bay, Red Brook and the forested areas of the Lyman Reserve. Beginner birders are welcome! Everyone will meet in the parking area. Bring binoculars. Members & Nonmembers: FREE. Birding in the Bioreserve Saturday, May 11 | 7am WATTUPA RESERVATION HEADQUARTERS 2929 BLOSSOM RD., FALL RIVER Large unfragmented areas like the Bioreserve support an array of warblers and other interior forest birds such the wood thrush, ovenbird, and scarlet tanager. Join Lynn Abbey of the Paskamansett Bird Club at the height of the spring migration. Bring binoculars. Members & Nonmembers: FREE. Wildflower Walk Saturday, May 18 | 10am–12noon COPICUT WOODS, INDIAN TOWN ROAD, FALL RIVER The well-drained, acidic soils of the Bioreserve are ideal for many spring wildflowers, including Pink Lady’s Slipper, Birdfoot Violet, and Canada Mayflower, to name a few. Join plant expert and naturalist Garry Plunkett to see what’s blooming at Copicut Woods. Members & Nonmembers: FREE. Spring is here: the gardens are growing, flowers are blooming, and the salamanders and birds are out and about looking for love. Whatever your interests might be, our spring events offer something for everyone during this season or renewal and rebirth – join us! Woodcock Wanderings Saturday, March 23 | 7pm COPICUT ROAD, FALL RIVER Some guys will go to great lengths to attract members of the opposite sex. The reclusive American Woodcock is best known for its spectacular spring courtship flight. Join Tom Athearn of Green Futures on this walk to witness the spring dance of the woodcock. Members & Nonmembers: FREE. Salamander Soiree Late March or early April. New Bedford Earth Day Parade Thursday, April 11 | 5pm CUSTOM HOUSE SQUARE 33 WILLIAM STREET, NEW BEDFORD Join the fun and march with us as we carry our “people powered” paper maché float made by Westport art students through downtown New Bedford to celebrate Earth Day on April’s AHA! night.
