COOK WITH US & MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN PEOPLES' LIVES "LIFE SKILLS COOKING WORKSHOPS" WITH OPCC & LAMP COMMUNITY EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT THE COOKING WORKSHOPS AT OPCC! April and the Torah April Schafer Director of Early Childhood Learning Center The High Holy Days are behind us. I find more and more meaning in the holidays and especially this year. Reflection. Atonement. Awakening. Renewal. Intense. These are some of the words or feelings you may have encountered here at University Synagogue in the month of October. Heavy words, heavy feelings, but not the mood you find inside the walls of our Temple or sukkah. Joyous. Proud. Community. Togetherness. Jewish. Happy. Connection. That is what you find here. We kicked off services on Monday, October 3rd with our Rosh Hashanah Service for Families with Young Children. I was in Michigan visiting family and friends and was still able to feel a part of the service through the live streaming. While I wasn't there physically, that I was able to stay connected to the temple from across the country was pretty special. I found myself in awe (once again) at how long the Torah scroll is, how many children excel in Shofar blowing and the amount of families who were here with their children bright and early. This was just my third year fasting on Yom Kippur. I learned the hard way that being a caffeine addict contributes nothing good to the day and I decided to wean myself off coffee beforehand. But what really resonated with me and pushed me to stick to the fast was something Nick Melvoin said on Kol Nidre. He said, in more elegant words, that homelessness is real, something very close to all of us and our community. He reminded me to be thankful each day for what I have and that while we are fasting for just 24 hours, there are people, children, who feel that deep hunger and pain every day. If I wasn't committed before I sure committed after that. Sukkot was an amazing time of community togetherness. This year we held our second annual Sukkot Potluck and partnered it with Shabbat. What an incredible evening! Our preschool students added to their Jewish Education by hearing the blessings led by that weekend's Bat Mitzvah student Chloe Ebrahimi. What an honor to share that night with her and her family! During Simchat Torah we spent time as a community singing and dancing with the Torah. I called my father afterwards and he replied with, "Very nice, an honor in my day. I've only held the Torah once and it was at my Bar Mitzvah!" Is our community different? Is it special? I know it is! I hope you found your high holy day experience here as meaningful as I did. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make each day and event so uniquely meaningful.
