L L ENTEN ENTEN M M ESSAGE FROM ESSAGE FROM B B ISHOP ISHOP T T OAL OAL In the Liturgy for Ash Wednesday a choice is offered in the words said as the mark of the ashes in the sign of the cross is made on our foreheads. One choice – “remember that you are dust and to dust you will return” – emphasises our mortality and the inevitability of death. It is quite a stark statement which calls us to attention and a renewed preparedness for our own death. The alternative – “Repent and believe in the Gospel” - calls us to conversion through repentance for our sins and a renewal of our faith in the Gospel. The penance undertaken through the course of Lent puts into effect the words heard on Ash Wednesday as we strive to interiorise the mark of the ashes on our foreheads. We humbly recognise that our chosen penance can be difficult to sustain as is the case with our inner conversion and our following of the Lord and his teachings. In fact we know that unless we allow the grace of God, gifted to us by Our Lord Jesus Christ, to work within us our own efforts result in failure and disappointment. The Decree on the Sacred Liturgy of the Second Vatican Council, Sacrosanctum Concilium offers a fine summary of the meaning of Lent. It points out the two elements of Lent and their purpose – the recalling of or preparation for baptism, and penance, in order to prepare the faithful for the celebration of Easter. It recommends that we hear God’s word more frequently and devote more time to prayer. It asks that the faithful be lead to understand better the distinctive character of penance as a detestation of sin because it is an offense against God. Strong words indeed as is the encouragement offered to pray for sinners. This surely includes all of us and reminds us of the words from the Prophet Isaiah describing God’s Suffering Servant read at the Good Friday Liturgy - “letting himself be taken for a sinner, while he was bearing the faults of many and praying all the time for sinners.” The Season of Lent asks us therefore to unite ourselves with the Lord in his sacrifice as we offer ourselves with and in him to the Father through our prayer and penance, for ourselves and all sinners. We frequently seek the intercession of Our Lady in this way of prayer when we say – “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen”` We seek her company this Lent as we strive to know and love her Son. + Joseph Toal, Bishop of Motherwell F IRST S UNDAY OF L ENT 5 M ARCH 2017 T HE P ARISH OF S AINT A UGUSTINE C OATBRIDGE !
