History

THE SWEDISH SCHOOL SYSTEM

Up to January 1996, the county councils were in charge of schooling and adult education for those with learning disabilities.

As of 1. January 1996, all programs and adult education for those with learning disabilities are run by the municipality and similar to regular school.

The Education Act

THE SWEDISH SCHOOL SYSTEM

According to the Swedish Education Act, all children and youth shall have equal access to education.

The Education Act states that the education shall “provide the pupils with knowledge and, in co-operation with the homes, promote their harmonious development into responsible human beings and members of the community”.

The Education Act also extends the right of education to adults.

Upper secondary education for the learning disabled offers vocational training in the form of national-, specially- or individual programs, similar to those of regular upper secondary.

Admission process

THE SWEDISH SCHOOL SYSTEM

The parents have to apply for their children's right to school for educationally subnormal.

After an investigation the board of education gives approval or disapproval.

The investigation includes -Psychological test-Pedagogical review-Social review-Medical review
