THE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG FACULTY OF EDUCATION Wu Zongjie School of International Studies, Zhejiang University ABSTRACT: This seminar explores a perspective in teacher development, which views teacher learning as the nourishment of life rather than the mastery of expertise, and curriculum change as the reclaiming of authentic language instead of rational manipulation of curriculum systems. The argument marks the decisive point where the traditional notion of knowledge-based teaching and teacher education is to be challenged by asking a philosophical question of teachers’ being. A research methodology which combines critical discourse studies (Fairclough, 2003) with the philosophical inquiry of teacher life (from the perspectives of Heidegger & Zhuangzi) will be demonstrated to show how a discourse analysis of curriculum practice can substantially enrich our understanding of teachers’ professional issues.
