Recently, the ad representative for our

parish bulletin (Liturgical Publications) was

here to make contact with area business-

es seeking support for the ads on the

back of the bulletin. We are most grate-

ful for the individuals and/or businesses

that place these ads on the back of the

bulletin. Their financial investment and

commitment covers the costs of publish-

ing the bulletin on a weekly basis. When-

ever the opportunity arises, please try to

support these area businesses, especially

in light of their generosity on behalf of

Holy Trinity Parish. Speaking of the bulle-

tin, new graphics, the use of full color,

and a larger format help to make the

parish bulletin more “user-friendly” and

effective in communicating important

information to the public.

17 DECEMBER 2017 3 3RD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

The Musings of Our Pastor

This holy Season of Advent probably has easily become for some of you an "unholy" time full of distractions, anxiety, impatience, and dis-

tasteful portions of aggravation! The Church invites us to enter into the Third Week of Advent in a spirit of joy, which is symbolized by the

pink candle on the Advent Wreath. We are reminded by St. Paul in his Letter to the Galatians that joy is one of the Fruits of the Holy Spir-

it. Spiritual writers have asserted many times that joy is such a vivid and reassuring outward sign of the presence of God dwelling within our

hearts. By the time many people, even devout Catholic-Christians, get to the glorious celebration of the Birth of Jesus, there really does not

seem to be much joy in Christmas at all! Isn't that not only a sad turn-of-events, but a great travesty as well!

Here's a suggestion for your prayerful consideration as we step into the 3rd Week of Advent. Intentionally embrace some quiet moments for

reflection in the coming week in the early morning, while other family members are still sleeping, or at night after the kids have gone off to

bed. Light the pink candle on the Advent Wreath in the midst of some darkness or subdued lighting. Soak in the peace and quiet, and enjoy

the opportunity to shut down the "rush-rush" flurry of life's daily activities for a few precious moments of time. Breathe in the presence and

goodness of the Lord in this special time of grace and prayer. Ask yourself just one basic question: "What gives me joy in the Lord"?

The Old Testament Prophet Isaiah asserts that the desert and parched land will bloom with abundant flowers, which is a cause for joy in the

Lord. Hands that are feeble and hearts that are frightened will be strengthened, while the eyes of the blind will be opened and those held in

bondage will be set free. These, too, are a cause for joy in the Lord for the blessings of God or the intervention of God make such things

possible. Whenever justice springs up in places full of oppression and wrongdoing, in the mind of Isaiah, or whenever love is renewed

through forgiveness and reconciliation, there is definitely cause for joy in the Lord. God's graces and the workings of his Holy Spirit bring

forth these sources of new life in our world.

On Thanksgiving Day, when a youngster from the parish handed me quite unexpectedly a picture of a colorful turkey and wishes for a Happy

Thanksgiving, I experienced joy in the Lord. When I seek God's wisdom to put together a homily with some freshness, creativity, and hard

work, and someone in the congregation indicates that this was pretty helpful or important for him/her right now, I do experience joy in the

Lord. Whenever I realize that the workings of God's grace has prompted me to reach out and be present to someone in a time of great need,

even though my own schedule was crammed full of important things to do, I surely do find joy in the Lord. Whenever I am surprised by the

kindness and thoughtfulness or support of others, which comes when I least expect, my heart overflows with joy in the Lord.

May the joy and peace and hope of Christ, our long-awaited Messiah, dwell within your hearts and your homes today and always. O come, O

come Emmanuel!
