Some of the famous best friends you may recall, like Snoopy and Woodstock, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, Woody and Buzz, and even Peabody and Sherman (showing my age!). We have some amazing best friends here at Open Door too…some new, some lifelong, some just plain special! Debbie B. and Kim A. have been friends for almost 30 years. They met in the ‘80s when Kim lived at the CLF, and they both attended Harvest Chapel Church. From there they became roommates, which ended only a few years ago when they moved into the Manor. Kim and Debbie walk to work together, attend activities, and go shopping and to church together—even vacation together! Definitely friends for life! Mary V. and Gina G. have been friends over 20 years. Their parents were actually friends, and then when Gina started at our DT, well, the friendship was even stronger then. Gina and Mary try to plan many activities together and do Social Club together when it’s feasible. Every day you will find them having lunch together, laughing, and picking on each other. Really, they seem more like sisters than friends do, which is the mark of that lifelong relationship that only gets better with age. Zach S., Austin C., and Mike P. Well, these guys are triple trouble! Not really, but boy oh boy, when they are together it’s a hoot and a half! These guys have known each other over 10 years, and if you didn’t know better, you would swear they were brothers! They all love music, movies and WWE wrestling. We sometimes say they have their own language, because I sincerely believe only they can understand one another sometimes, and they do it on purpose so we don’t know what’s going on! Ha-ha! OPEN DOOR REHABILITATION CENTER Kenny S. Well, Kenny is one of our more quiet

consumers. He can be very chatty at times, but usually keeps to himself. However, he does have his own best friends as well. Kenny has Whitey the Bear. Whitey is always with Kenny. Sometimes you have to speak to Whitey first before Kenny will talk to you. I have known Kenny for 10 years and I have never, ever seen him without Whitey. He also has Ellie. Ellie is an elephant. Sometimes Ellie is with

Kenny, sometimes not. If Ellie isn’t along, sometimes it is Whopper, the smaller elephant, ironically enough. Either way, a best friend is a best friend: human or not, the bond is just as important!

Julie O. and Kelly B. hit it off the minute Julie arrived at Open Door two years ago. Kelly has other sisters and brothers, but was immediately drawn to Julie like a sister. Kelly helped make Julie’s transition to residential life here at OD smooth. I think Julie helped Kelly too, because we saw a light in Kelly’s eyes that we hadn’t seen for a while. She was always smiling and happy! This was one of those new, immediate friendships where you know they were put together for a reason by some powers that be. Maybe in 10 more years, we will have another story of their friendship!

Last but not least… another triad friendship, almost Three’s Company-like, without the apartment and Mr. Roper! Beth M., Michael L., and Rachel N. are a triple threat in the friendship business. Beth has been here the longest, then Michael and then Rachel, who is here just under a year now! Talk about buddies. All of them work very hard in the workshop, but when it comes to classes and activities, where you find one you will find the others. Beth and Rachel have had an

especially difficult two years, and it’s really great to see them be able to have each other to lean on. The world works in mysterious ways. And that Michael? Always hanging out with those two lovely ladies…lucky man!

You’ve got a friend in me, you’ve got a friend in me.

You’ve got troubles, and I’ve got ‘em too.

There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you.

We stick together and can see it through ‘cause you’ve got a friend in me.

You’ve got a friend in me.

“You’ve Got a Friend in Me” from Toy Story (song by Randy Newman)

Tommy’s Gift for Open Door

Open Door is not your normal organization. Despite all the growth through the years, we have remained a tight group and are true to our calling of being dedicated to the consumers. This is why, when an idea for a deck on the back of our Birch home originated with two of our staff—Debbi B. and Mary T.—everyone at Open Door quickly embraced the plan. How could we get such a large project accomplished?

Thank goodness we live in the Sandwich area, where community means something, and thank goodness for Tommy’s Gift for answering Debbi’s call! Tommy’s Gift is a nonprofit group from Plano, IL. It’s run by Tom and Kim Zimmerman and the United Methodist Church of Plano. Debbi said, “Tommy’s Gift has offered to help us with something ‘big’ in the past, so they were the first to call because of their reputation of giving to our community.”

When Tom and Kim Zimmerman of Tommy’s Gift came to survey the need for the deck, they decided that the people living at Birch didn’t need just a deck. Instead, after talking with their committee, they decided to put in a state-of-the-art, fully accessible

900-square-foot backyard retreat that includes a large activity table! It will even wrap around a large tree!

The dream took a big step closer to reality thanks to a fun-filled charitable night in August put on by Tommy’s Gift and the United Methodist Church of Plano. People came from all over the area to test their brains on trivia, play raffles, bid on auctioned items, and win prizes. Betsy F. won big on the raffles and said, “I feel so honored to be the sister of one of the lucky gentlemen at Birch. These wonderful people worked so hard to make this event a success and the deck a dream come true. What a loving gift. That’s what Tommy’s Gift is all about!”

Open Door staff attended the event as well. Program Coordinator Gene S. said, “The trivia benefit was a blast! It was a lot of fun. The turnout was great, and it touched me to see the community come together for our cause.”

Last we checked, Tommy’s Gift is over halfway to their $15,000 goal to building the backyard retreat. The labor has been donated, and community generosity has been tremendous!

Thank you so much to Tommy’s Gift and all who came to support our dream, and thanks to the corporate sponsors:

Betsy was a big winner on the raffles

and she can’t wait to visit with her brother in his

backyard retreat!

Residents of Birch are excited and thankful for all

the support!

SUMMER FUN at the Sandwich Sportsman’s Club!

The Sandwich Sportsman’s Club has had a long history of serving the local community! They offer a variety of activities like trap shooting, camping, archery, fishing—to name a few. They also host community events, including Buffet Breakfasts, Kids’ Fishing Derby, Pig Raffle, a Haunted House, and various picnics.

Recently, a group of individuals from Open Door were invited to attend a fun-filled picnic. The peaceful paradise is found down the winding gravel road, nestled back in the woods. Many were surprised to find this place just off the beaten path. They were greeted by a group of friendly members and shown around the grounds. A highlight of the day was a beanbag tournament. This is a favorite game among our group, so you can imagine the fun!

There is nothing more satisfying than a delicious picnic meal with lots of hot dogs, hamburgers, beans, and of course dessert—especially when you enjoy the picnic in the company of some new friends! We would like to thank the Sportsman’s Club for hosting such a fun day!

Two Decades of DedicationCongratulations to Chet Carpenter for 20 years of hard work and dedication as a Courtesy Associate

at the Super Wal-Mart in Plano, Illinois. Chet, who has been affiliated with Open Door Rehabilitation

Center since June of 1981, began working at the Plano Wal-Mart in August of 1996.

You may recognize Chet—he is always out and about, collecting carts in the store parking lot or

assisting customers to their vehicles with large and heavy purchases. When asked if Chet had any

thoughts or comments about his accomplishment, Chet said, “Twenty years—you don’t hear of that any

more. Wow!”

Yes, Chet, you are absolutely right. You don’t hear about people working at one place for 20 years that

often. But you have—and it speaks to what a great work ethic you have.

Again, congratulations, buddy!

We hope you have many more years of devoted service.

We deeply appreciate all of your support – with contributions, donations, honorariums, and memorial gifts. Your continued support

enables Open Door to continue to provide quality training, residential, and home care support

for our clients. Thank you so very much – we are deeply grateful for your support.

For your convenience, we have enclosed a donation envelope in this newsletter. We hope you

find this to be helpful – and we look forward to acknowledging your generous gifts in future

newsletters!

*We try very hard to acknowledge every gift.

This list includes gifts that we received between July 1 – August 31, 2016.

In addition to the gifts we received from July 1 – August 31, 2016, this special section includes

a HUGE THANK-YOU for each and every one of you who made our summer fundraising events

memorable and fun – and successful!

Thanks to the generosity of longtime and new supporters, sponsors, and volunteers (and Mother

Nature’s cooperation!), the 24th Annual Golf Outing at Edgebrook Golf Course and our Lemon

Shake-up and Pizza booth at the Sandwich Fair raised critical funds for Open Door’s clients!

Both events exceeded the funds raised in 2015, with the Golf Outing raising approximately

$17,000 and – between the booth sponsorships, the donations for the MyBuddy Program, and

the revenue from the booth sales – the Sandwich Fair raising approximately $19,000. From the

bottom of our hearts – thank you.

OUR WONDERFUL SANDWICH FAIR SPONSORS, SUPPORTERS, AND DONORS

The last and best fair of the year—The Sandwich Fair—has come to a successful close! Mother Nature kept us guessing and we were in tents instead of under the grandstand, but it was a very successful event. We had a record number of

MyBuddy Program sponsorships. And revenue from the booth increased over a year ago!

We also hit the jackpot with our volunteers! We had our wonderful regulars as well as delightful new volunteers—including several National Honor Society students from Sandwich High School!

From the Sandwich Fair Association to our volunteers to our friends from Rosati’s Pizza in Sandwich to our generous donors and sponsors—everyone helped make it a success!
