Today’s Message O God, Strengthen My Hands

Dr. T. Scott Daniels

with Dr. T. Scott Daniels “O God, Strengthen My Hands” - Nehemiah 6:1-14

Almost Finished • Somewhere around October of 445 BC, after Nehemiah had been governor

for only a few months, the project of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem was nearly finished. Only the setting up of the doors and gates remained.

• With the project nearly completed the enemies of Nehemiah begin to panic. Once the gates were in place their hopes of keeping Judah weak would be dashed. Sanballat mounts one last attack upon Nehemiah. The entire saga is set around the repetition of the Hebrew word yr’ meaning to frighten or intimidate (6:9, 14, 19).

Luring Nehemiah into a Fight • The first strategy used by Sanballat and his cronies was to try and lure

Nehemiah away from Jewish territory. The Valley of One was outside of Judean boundaries and likely in a location hostile to the Jews. It was the perfect place for a trap.

• Four times Nehemiah’s enemies sent letters asking for a meeting. But each time Nehemiah responded with an emphatic but diplomatic “no.”

• He did not allow their bullying tactics to lure him beyond the boundaries of Judea. • He also did not go down to the Valley of Ono because his first priority was

the finishing of the Jerusalem walls – the very work they detested. False Witness against Nehemiah • Having failed to lure Nehemiah into a fight, his enemies turned to slander.

Sanballat wrote a fifth letter in which he stated that a rumor was going around among the nations that Nehemiah and the Judeans intended to finish the walls and then rebel against Persia and King Artaxerxes.

• Sanballat twisted the Israelite hopes, that someday God would restore his people by re-establishing the royal lineage, by stating that Nehemiah was having various prophets proclaim that he should be established as king in Jerusalem. There is enough truth in what Sanballat was writing to be credible, but there is enough dishonesty in it to make it dangerous.

• The facts about Nehemiah’s lineage are missing from the text. The reader is not told if he was from the line of David or not. It is highly unlikely that Nehemiah is from David’s royal line since it is not mentioned anywhere, but for Sanballat this is unimportant. Sanballat’s goal was to start a rumor that in Jerusalem a messianic movement was underway that was attempting to make Nehemiah king.

• Sanballat’s guile is obvious. Certainly Nehemiah would not be the first person in close relationship to a king to rebel against authority and attempt an overthrow.

• Nehemiah, however, recognizes Sanballat’s real motives. He wants to frighten the people so they will stop working on the wall. So Nehemiah calls the bluff.

• Confident in his relationship with King Artaxerxes and his correct assessment of the situation, Nehemiah stays firmly committed to the project before him.

This Week in Ministry An Invitation to Compromise • In desperation, Nehemiah’s enemies attempt to turn his own

people against him. They hire a “prophet” to try and lure Nehemiah into the temple. Shemaiah tells Nehemiah that he has received word that his enemies plan on killing him and so he must run and hide with Shemaiah in the temple.

• Entering into the temple in ways that violate the law of God had serious consequences. For example, King Uzziah (2 Chron. 26) entered into the temple to burn incense on the altar and was struck down with leprosy.

• Since Nehemiah was not a priest – and also since, as a servant of the Persian king, he may have been a eunuch and thus excluded from the temple for this reason as well – such an action would be for Nehemiah a sin against God.

• Nehemiah therefore resisted the temptation to place his own life above his fear of God, and thus recognized that Shemaiah could not be speaking the word of God.

• Nehemiah quickly made the right decision because his commitment to his principles was stronger than the danger of the situation or his own fear of death. It was his strength of character and not some flaw in the “prophet’s” technique that enabled Nehemiah to see through this false prophecy and not deviate from his mission.

Returning to Prayer • In both of these situations, Nehemiah closes the crisis with

prayer (6:9, 14). • The first prayer is for God to strengthen his hands and the

second prayer is for God to expose the motives and falsehood of his enemies.

• The calculations of Nehemiah’s enemies went awry in their underestimation of the depth of his convictions and the extent to which he was able to draw upon them for strength.

• “We can only marvel at Nehemiah’s refusal to reply in kind… Nehemiah consistently dealt with the situation in an honest and forthright manner. No insincerity tainted his responses. No counterplots marred his approach. In this duel of diplomacy Nehemiah refused to play by the deceitful rules of his adversaries and countered their lies with open, frank statements that display his discernment of their traps and his refusal to be intimidated” (Matthew Levering).

The Other Cheek and the Second Mile (Matthew 5:38-41) • In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus offers to his disciples a third

way beyond running from enemies or responding with retribution. Here are some principles we can glean from both Nehemiah and the Sermon on the Mount.

1. God’s people draw strength from their convictions. 2. God’s people are to live as people of value and worth. 3. The people of God must continually overcome the temptation

to respond “in kind” to enemies. 4. More often than not, living out the purposes of God requires

devotion to the constructive aspects of the mission rather than the destructive.

5. For the people of God, the ends do not justify the means, the means and the ends are identical.
