First annual 5K/10K Fun Walk and Run

The Dominion Homeowners Association Neighborhood Outreach Committee  held their first annual 5K/10K Fun Walk and Run on September 28, 2013.   This Walk/Run was organized to bring together homeowners at The Dominion, their friends and acquaintances, students from nearby TMI, The Episcopal School of Texas, Foundation Physical Therapy and We Run San Antonio. We feel the event was quite successful with 84 participants.

Thank you to all of our sponsors which were Keller Williams Luxury Realty, Foundation Physical Therapy and We Run San Antonio.  We couldn't have done this without them.   A special thanks also to Joe Anthony Ramon for helping to make this event a success.

The Cloisters National Night Out and Block Party

The Cloisters residents celebrated National Night Out at the home of Theresa and B.J. Hines. About forty neighbors enjoyed visiting and getting acquainted while sampling gumbo, King Ranch chicken, and an array of appetizers, salads, and desserts contributed by Cloisters residents.

The group welcomed Rob McDaniel and Julie Rincon as well as Chief DiStefano and two of our SAPD officers who pedaled up

on bikes. A big hit was the visit by the Stonewall Bend Fire Station firefighters who gave the children a ride in the fire truck.

Good food, nice neighbors, the pleasant addition of a few babies and children, and a cool Fall evening made our Block Party a great success. We are already looking forward to making plans for next year's party.

The Gardens National Night Out and Block Party

Neighbors gathered on October 1, 2013, in the lovely backyard courtyard of Larry and Lyn Hicks in The Gardens to celebrate and observe National Night Out.  About 75 adults and children enjoyed the company of others and the community atmosphere.

The adults engaged in conversation, greeting old friends and making new ones while the children were, well, "children". They happily chased each other around and marveled at the firemen and fire truck that made an appearance just for them.  The adults, on the other hand, were pleased to have the opportunity to engage in conversation with two of the San Antonio bike police who stopped by as they were patrolling our neighborhood, keeping our homes safe, while we enjoyed the party. The absolutely gorgeous weather and the never ending variety of delicious potluck dishes and beautiful desserts were shared and enjoyed by all.

Our thanks go out to Rob and Julie, our dedicated HOA representatives who took the time to come by to say hello; and to Lyn Hicks, Dona Whitener, and Peggy Bland, our Gardens Event Chairperson and her committee.  We are so blessed to live in this wonderful community.  We can't wait to do this all over again next year!

Stop Signs and Speed Limits in The Dominion

Please observe the stop signs in transponder lanes at each gate, even if no one is in front of you.  To avoid confusion, treat the stop sign as you would all stop signs in the community. Please also be reminded that the speed limit within The Dominion is 20 MPH unless otherwise noted. Thank you for your efforts in keeping our roads safe.

Common Area Landscape Maintenance

One of the main functions of the Dominion Homeowners' Association (DHOA) is to maintain the Common Areas. These areas include a collection of street medians, landscape beds, turf areas, natural areas and other open space. Maintenance levels for these areas are as varied as the areas themselves. Some Common Areas are highly maintained and manicured, while some are left as natural areas and receive little or no maintenance.

Essentially, the DHOA's Common Areas are divided into four (4) basic categories, maintained at 4 different levels. Level 1 area is highly maintained and typically found along the highest profile areas of the Community. These areas are usually mowed and edged about once a week, trash and leaves are picked up once a week, shrubs are trimmed as needed to maintain a desired look and mulch is kept looking fresh at all times. Level 1 areas are irrigated and treated with herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers. Level 2 areas are the standard common areas of the Community. These areas receive weekly visits during March-October and twice monthly visits November -February. Shrubs are trimmed once per month and mulch is applied twice a year. Level 3 areas are the

non-irrigated greenbelt areas of the Community. These areas receive maintenance twice monthly during March-October and once per month during November-February. Level 4 areas are the fully native areas of the community. There are no services that are required for these areas except when it is an imminent threat to a person or property.

Ironically, the highly maintained Level 1 areas seem to be the source of the most concern. These areas often intermingle with natural areas, requiring the association to continually combat weeds and native grasses. The only viable way to treat weeds and native grasses is chemically and mowing. Even with mowing and application of herbicides, native grasses and weeds continue to infiltrate the common areas as seeds spread by vehicles, animals and wind. Some weeds and native grasses grow quickly and to heights well above the turf. Unfortunately, our mowing cycles are such that weeds and native grasses can become apparent. While increasing the mowing frequency would improve the appearance of our common area, this would also result in higher maintenance costs.

Our common area is also greatly affected by the drought conditions over the past 2 years. Hot weather and minimal water weakens turf or in extreme cases, can destroy large sections for landscaping to include trees, shrubs and grasses.

Drainage areas are also a source of periodic concern. Drainage areas often experience sentiment deposit or erosion during heavy rain causing standing water from time to time. While the DHOA maintains drainage areas to minimize standing water, residents should expect for some standing water in these areas.

While the Board endeavors to provide a high standard of maintenance, the Directors are also sensitive to the financial means of our residents. The challenge for the Board and DHOA staff will continue to be to provide the best service possible with the resources available.

New House Check Service to be Implemented

Effective November 1, 2013, residents who request the House Check Service will receive a fee of $10 per day billed to their account. Please note that previous accounts registered to the old House Check Service WILL NOT renew automatically.  (Continued on page 6)
