“...so will it be at the end of the age.”
Perhaps it takes a ‘shock to the system’, like a persistent global pandemic, to awaken us from complacency to acknowledge the fundamental truth of our always-precarious grip on health and well-being—indeed, on life itself. These many months of upset plans and routines, of disruptions in social and economic life, have underlined our sense of the limits of our control over most aspects of our existence. More than frustrated, we are tempted to feel helpless, maybe leading to the question, ‘Why bother?’, when considering the challenge of being ‘righteous’ in all our relationships and responsibilities. Scripture speaks to our need for a bracing reminder that there is Someone Who is ultimately in charge, well aware of the contradictions we encounter and biding His time before straightening things out. Our conviction about God’s authority and power is the seed of our hope, which sustains us in trying consistently to do what is right—acting as “leaven” to influence the direction of our world, nudging it to be more reflective of the Book of Wisdom’s teaching that “those who are just must be kind.” That is the lesson drawn from our experience of a God Who, though “master of might” governs with “clemency...and lenience”, permitting His children to repent of their sins. Daily affronted by the seeming triumph of forces of greed and arrogance, we hear Jesus’ parable of the tolerance of God, likened to a landowner who patiently eyes the coexistence of weeds and wheat in his field, knowing that, though it may struggle to compete with the weeds for water and sunlight, the wheat will still be wheat at the end of the growing season, when it can be separated out and harvested, while the weeds are bundled up to be burned. Likewise with His example of the tiny mustard seed, Jesus encourages those with “ears to hear” not to give up, but to be confident about the outcome of growing to full stature as “a large bush”, where “birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.” All these images look to the future—to “the end of the age”, which may be far off, or just around the corner. Prudence advises ‘staying the course’, re-sisting evidence of chaos all around us and trusting in a God Who has “the care of all”, His “might...the source of justice.” Because of continuing restrictions on our gathering for worship, Fr. Tom Quinn’s announcement last weekend of his expected re-assignment will take time to circulate through the parish. As I commented at Sunday’s Masses and in my video message, I share the sense of regret over our impending loss of Fr. Tom’s dedicated service, but I see his decision as a commendable exercise of priestly responsibility, to broaden his experience of different settings of parish ministry before offering himself as a candidate for service as a pastor. We have been blessed in so many ways by sharing in Fr. Tom’s initial years as a priest, and we promise the support of our prayers now, in his discernment during the transfer process, and into coming years, wherever he may be called to serve God’s People.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch was leavened.” (Matthew 13: 24-43) Good stewards in a parish are like the yeast in today’s Gospel. Their selfless gifts of time and
talent help the parish grow and thrive and their example inspires others to become good stewards too. MEMORIAL DONATIONS
We are accepting Memorial Donations for flowers for the Altar area, the Candles, Bread & Wine used for the Liturgies, and the weekly Sanctuary Candle. These items may be donated in memory of someone or to mark a special occasion. A
donation of $10 is suggested for candles, bread & wine and sanctuary candle, and a donation of $40 is suggested for the weekly flowers. (MEMORIAL CARDS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THESE DONATIONS.) ALSO, as we face the need to replace various items for liturgical use, we are happy to arrange for memorials of deceased loved ones. Contact the Parish Office.

In the present health emergency, with public celebrations of Mass suspended, our weekly revenue, of course, has been greatly reduced. We are grateful to all who have been sending in offerings by mail, or who contribute by e-debit or credit card, or have signed up for our new e-giving option, Parish Giving. Envelopes can be mailed to the Parish Office (St. Michael Church, 40 Alden Street, Cranford, NJ 07016) or you may consider the Parish Giving option. On the parish website (stmichaelcranford.org) there is a logo button for Parish Giving that will take you to the easy online sign-up form. Thank you!
The Archdiocese of Newark has also established a GoFundMe site for contributions to the parishes of the Archdiocese, and to help support parishes with meager sources of revenue. St. Michael Parish is among the parishes accepting donations via the GoFundMe initiative: go to www.rcan.org/parishsupport, click ‘Contribute’ and scroll through the options for ‘Select a Team’ to ‘St. Michael Church-Cranford’ to make a donation, either one-time or recurring monthly. WHY DO WE DO THAT? Catholic Life Explained Question: Why do Catholics eat fish on Friday? Answer: For centuries, meatless Fridays were the norm for Catholics throughout the world. Friday was chosen because that was the day on which Jesus died, and Christians wanted to find a way to honor that day with special prayers and acts of penance and self-denial. The practice of abstaining from meat on Fridays — under pain of sin — grew out of that desire, and it became an official part of Church teaching until the time of the Second Vatican Council.
In the 1960’s, there was a shift in the Church’s thinking, in large part because there was a recognition that differences in cultures and economic realities meant that eating or not eating meat had different meanings for different peoples. For example, in cultures that were largely dependent on seafood or a vegetarian diet, abstaining from meat was no sacrifice at all. While in other places, eating fish and other kinds of seafood was actually something rare and special and not a sacrifice. This was all part of a basic reflection on ”why we do what we do” among the Church’s pastors.
Today, Catholics throughout the world are still instructed to abstain from meat on the Fridays of Lent. The bishops of some countries, such as in England and Wales, ask Catholics to abstain from meat every Friday, continuing the older tradition. The Bishops of the United States have taken a slightly different approach, encouraging Catholics to honor Friday as a special day by abstaining from meat every Friday or by taking on some other work of penance or charity for the sake of others.
Regardless of what we choose to do, the real value in all of this is to see a reflection of Good Friday in each Friday, to remember the self-giving love of Jesus, and to honor that love through some sort of sacrifice or act of mercy.
