W M D World Marriage Day (WMD) honors husband and wife as the foundation of the family, the basic unit of society. It salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily married life. The idea of celebrating marriage began in Baton Rough, LA, in 1981, when couples encouraged the Mayor, the Governor, and the Bishop to proclaim St. Valentines Day as “We Believe in Marriage Day”. The event was so successful, the idea was presented to and was adopted by Worldwide Marriage Encounter’s National Leadership. In 1983, the name was changed to “World Marriage Day”, designated to be celebrated each year on the second Sunday in February. In 1993, his Holiness, Pope John Paul II, imparted his Apostolic Blessing on WMD and celebrations continue to grow and spread to more countries and faith expressions every year.

The first Eucharistic Ministers listed on the Parish Ministry Schedules will be noted in the Parish Ministry Sections of bulletin; however, it is still recommended that Eucharistic Ministers “check-in” at their respective parishes prior to Mass to be sure that the needed number of ministers are in attendance. Thank you for your service to your parish!

Please note that our weekday morning Mass on Monday, February 10th will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. with the 8th

Grade Students of St. John the Evangelist Regional Catholic School.

P C M A meeting for members of all four Uniontown Parish Pastoral Councils will be held on Tuesday, February 18th at 6:30 p.m. in the St. John the Evangelist Parish Center. Members of the St. John the Evangelist Pastoral Council are asked to mark their calendars and attend this meeting.

N T Thank you parishioners of St. John the Evangelist Parish for your donations to the St Vincent de Paul Uniontown Area Conference Food Pantry. The winter months can be especially difficult for low income families. Because of your generosity, the St. Vincent de Paul Food Panty can help many families get through difficult situations.

Today we hear in the 1st reading we hear from the prophet Isaiah. “Thus says the Lord: “Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless;

clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own.” Similarly, in the Gospel, Jesus talks about being salt and light. “Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” The refrain of our Presentation hymn, We Are the Light of the World, reflects the last line of the Gospel “may our light shine before all, that they may see the good that we do, and give glory to God.” We are challenged in our Closing hymn, Go Make a Difference. “Go make a difference. We can make a difference. Go make a difference in the world.” Verse 1 “We are the salt of the Earth, called to let the people see the love of God in you and me. We are the light of the world, not to be hidden but be seen. Go make a difference in the world.” Verse 2: “We are the hands of Christ reaching out to those in need, the face of God for all to see.” Verse 3: “So let your love shine on, let it shine for all to see. And the spirit of Christ will be with us as we go. Go make a difference in the world.” So let’s accept the challenge today to be the salt and light of the Earth and make a difference in the world. – Michelle

W I T C N ? In February 1818, Father John Vianney became the Curé of Ars (Pastor) in France. He spent long periods of time in front of the Blessed Sacrament. At about the same time each day he would hear a loud clanging noise at the back of the church. He was always curious about the noise. One morning after hearing this noise he hurried to the back of the church and found a farmer leaving the church with his tools. The Curé asked the man, “Do you come here every morning?” “Yes, Father”, he replied. “What do you do here?” the Curé inquired. “I just sit a little and pray”, said the simple farmer. “How do you pray?” the good priest asked. The man was aware of his own simplicity and a little embarrassed. He bowed his head and said, “I look at the good God, and the good God looks at me.” To sign up for an hour of Eucharistic Adoration, and spend time with the good God, call Mary Catherine (724)437-5161.

SAINT JOSEPHINE BAKHITA ( . 1869-1947)

F D : F 8

“Save Darfur!” That cry echoes around the world and in the heart of the Church, where a child of Darfur is one of our newest saints: Josephine (her baptismal name) Bakhita (“Lucky One,” the slave-traders’ nickname). Kidnapped at nine, sold in Sudan’s slave-markets,

flogged daily till covered with scars, Bakhita was finally bought by Italians and taken to Italy. There Bakhita discovered a “Master” who had himself been flogged to redeem her from slavery! “I am truly loved,” she thought, “and awaited by this Love.” Baptized, she often kissed the baptismal font, exclaiming, “Here I became a daughter of God!” For fifty years as a Daughter of Charity, Bakhita provided cheerful hospitality to all who knocked at the convent door. In her final illness, she relived slavery’s horror: “Please, loosen these chains,” she begged the nurse. “They are so heavy!” Her last words were: “Our Lady! Our Lady!” John Paul II canonized her in the Jubilee Year 2000, praising God for leading her “from abject slavery to the dignity of being your daughter and the Bride of Christ.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Our Lady of Lourdes is a Roman Catholic title of the Blessed Virgin Mary venerated in honor of the Marian apparitions that occurred in 1858 in the vicinity of Lourdes in France. The first of these is the apparition on February 11, 1858, when 14-year old Bernadette Soubirous told her mother that a "lady" spoke to her in the cave of Massabielle (a kilometre and a half (1 mi) from the town) while she was gathering firewood with her sister and a friend. Similar apparitions of the "Lady" were reported on eighteen occasions that year, until the climax revelation of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception took place. On January 18, 1862, the local Bishop of Tarbes Bertrand-Sévère Laurence endorsed the veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lourdes. On July 3, 1876, Pope Pius IX officially granted a Canonical Coronation to the image that used to be in the courtyard of what is now part of the Rosary Basilica. The image of Our Lady of Lourdes has been widely copied and reproduced in shrines and homes, often in garden landscapes. Soubirous was later canonized as a Catholic saint by Pope Pius XI in 1933. After church investigations confirmed her visions, a large church was built at the site. Lourdes is now a major Marian pilgrimage site: within France, only Paris has more hotels than Lourdes.
