17th Sunday of Ordinary Time Sunday 26th July 2020

Year A, Weekday Cycle 2, Psalter Week 4

SPECIFIC PROCEDURES FOR THE

DIOCESE OF SALFORD

Funerals and Weddings should be limited to 30 guests, or less if the stated capacity of a church is less than 30. These liturgies may include Mass with all the conditions concerning the distribu-tion of Holy Communion etc. However, the sim-pler form of graveside and crematorium funerals is to be encouraged.

The Sacrament of Baptism should be for one child only on each occasion and should be lim-ited to immediate family and godparents. Those whose child’s baptism had to be postponed can now contact Fr. K to arrange a new date.

The Celebration of First Communions will be delayed until the autumn, at the earliest, I have already sent out proposed new dates for the Ho-ly Communion Masses. Please note that large numbers of people are often invited, many of whom are not familiar with the church and litur-gical practice and this may easily lead to a com-promise of the requirements of social-distancing and misunderstandings about the reception of Communion. Therefore numbers will have to be initially restricted to immediate family.

Dear Parishioners,

The Gospel today begins with two parables: the treasure buried in the field , and the pearl f great price.

Both parables are similar with Jesus instructing his disciples that the Kingdom of heaven is worth the price!

In other words once we encounter the Kingdom, that encounter demands a response from us, a response that will reprioritise all else for the sake of the Kingdom.

It is worth selling all other things just to possess the Kingdom!

The evangelist through the inclusion of these parables reminds us that the decisions we make - all of them - have consequences.

We as Christians must in all that we do choose to prioritise the Kingdom, we must make a choice for Christ and joyfully live out that choice daily; because the choice we make reveals to the world what and who holds value for us.

God Bless

Fr. Kieren

Catholic students in Yr 6 & the Sacrament of Confirma-tion On behalf of the Deanery Fr. Michael Deas will be writing to your parents (via our primary schools) soon, inviting you to register your interest in participating in the programme leading up to the celebration of the Sacra-ment of Confirmation, please return completed forms to Fr. Michael.

We have been working with a charity called ‘The Bread & Butter Thing’. Their objective is to ensure no food goes to landfill and make that food of use to fami-lies in Flixton. We are looking for volunteers to help hand out the food and would welcome your support. They visit us at St Monica’s church car park every Friday between 1.15 until 2pm. If you are interested please call Lisa Cooke on 07793721924.

Sacrament of Confirmation registration forms are now available. If your child is currently in Yr7 and would like to receive the sacrament in April 2021 please email Fr. Kieren and he will send you a registration form for com-pletion.

St. Ambrose For parents of boys who may still be con-sidering applying to St Ambrose College in Hale Barns for a place in September 2021, please note that the Entrance Examination will now take place at the slightly later date than previously advertised on Friday 16th October 2020 and we have therefore extended the deadline for applications to 17th August 2020. Unfortunately our planned Open Morning in June was unable to go ahead. We understand that this will have been extremely disappointing for parents/boys son so we have created a Virtual Open Day which is now available on the College website. This will allow you to see some of the amazing facilities and staff and will hopefully give you a feel for the ethos here at St Am-brose College. The Virtual Open Day can be found at: h t tps ://www.s t -ambroseco l lege .org.uk/news/?pid=158&nid=1&storyid=37. Please visit the Admissions section of the College website (www.st -ambrosecollege.org.uk) where you will find more infor-mation regarding the admissions process to include the online application form, the updated Prospectus and a link to familiarisation papers for the verbal reasoning paper. For queries please contact admissions@st-

LIVE-STREAMED MASSES Live streamed Masses (both Weekday and Sunday) will continue.

Attending Sunday Mass Please do consider joining us for Weekday or Sunday Mass. In order to attend Mass, please register your interest and your preferred Mass time, by emailing Amanda (only) by 12 noon on Wednesday or phoning the Presbytery on Wednesday morning. This will help me get an idea of who might want to attend. If you come to Mass one week. Those who live in the same household may share a bench as a family. Please note that you do not have to register to attend weekday Mass.

Parish Pilgrimage before the lockdown we had been planning a Parish pilgrimage to Poland in May 2021. I know that even with the ‘promised’ vaccine that may be available later this year many are still hesitant in travel-ling. Could you let me know if you are still interested in travelling to Poland next year.

Parish building Work (1) Roof repairs at English Mar-tyrs’ Church (scheduled for Easter) will begin on Thurs-day 23rd July. For the next few weeks most weekday Masses from that date will be moved to St. Monica’s Church - including weekday funerals. Baptisms will con-tinue to be celebrated at English Martyrs’. There is cur-rently no private prayer or adoration. (2) Boiler at Par-ish Centre work will commence once approval from Dio-cese has been given. Sadly the centre will remain closed until work is completed. (3) Replacing heaters in Jubilee Room the contractors will soon begin work.

New Carpet and fitting I am contemplating a little sum-mer decorating in the Presbytery - well once I buy some paint! I am hoping to replace the hallway, staircase and landing carpet; recommendations would be appreciated.

Re-Arranging Baptism if I have had to postpone the baptism of your child because of the lockdown you might want to begin to get in touch so that an alternative date may be arranged.

New Registrars many thanks to the parishioners who has come forward to join our registrar team. I have now the forms for you to fill in. If you contact me to arrange pick up that would be great - please return them to me. Once the forms have been returned and accept we can ar-range some training.

The Prayer Group of the St John Henry Newman Par-ish meets on Tuesdays at 7.30pm via Zoom. The prayer time is an opportunity to encounter Jesus through praise and worship, reading the Sunday Gospel and discussion, quiet meditation and personal sharing, interceding to-gether. Once you have downloaded the Zoom app, please email one of the prayer group members at the email addresses given below. When contact and your names have been received , you will be sent the link for entering the prayer meeting. [email protected] (or) [email protected]

Getting Your Child Baptised

The Code of Canon Law

states: “Parents are

obliged to see to it that in-

fants are bap-tised within

the first weeks after birth”

(867)

This canon, although not practical for many reasons, reminds us of the importance and urgency of the sacrament of Baptism.

As a Parish we follow the Diocesan Baptism Poli-cy:

In order for a baby/child (under the age of 7) to be baptised, the Catholic family, (resident in the Parish of St. John Henry Newman) if not already practising their faith, must begin to attend Sunday Mass for a minimum of at least 6 weeks before a baptism date can be discussed.

To discuss this further please contact Fr. Kieren or speak to him after Sunday Mass. After confirmation of a date for Baptism, a Preparation meeting must be arranged.

For children over 7 and for adults considering be-coming a Catholic please contact Fr. Kieren via the Presbytery Office (0161) 7482328 or via email (see front of newsletter).

Understanding Baptism - The Catechism 1213-1278

In language we might all understand

Baptism is the foundational sacrament and the prerequisite for all other sacraments. It unites us with Jesus Christ, incorporates us into His redemp-tive death on the Cross, thereby freeing us from the power of Original Sin and all personal sins, and causes us to rise with him to a life without end. Since Baptism is a covenant with God, the individual must say YES to it. In the baptism of children, the parents must confess the Faith on behalf of their children.

Water symbolises cleansing and new life … Baptism … is more than a sign of conversion and repentance; it is new life in Christ. That is why the cere-mony also includes the signs of anointing, the white garment, and the bap-tismal candle.

A person who turns to Christianity is not just changing a world view. They are beginning to travel a path of learning, in which they become a new be-ing through personal conversion, but especially through the gift of Baptism. They are now a living member of the Body of Christ.
