The Labor to Which We’re Called In words attributed to Mother Teresa, “Many people mistake our work for our vocation. Our vocation is the love of Jesus.” As we celebrate Labor Day, what does such a distinction mean? Vocation comes from Latin for “calling.” Christians understand vocation as that for which God created you, involving activities you do well, enjoy and feel good about doing, and that serve others. If you’re blessed to earn a paycheck doing something that fits those categories, then your profession or occupation — your work —likely is your vocation. Other people work a paying job because an opportunity presents itself and the income is needed, even if it isn’t their favorite thing to do. Perhaps they live out their truest vocation during non-employment hours: singing with a choir, raising children, building houses with Habitat for Humanity. Christians in any capacity, paid or not, can live out Jesus’ calling to love God and neighbor with our whole being (Luke 10:27). When God is “CEO” of our lives, it shows in how we treat our fellow laborers.

Alan Larsen is writing a book on The History of Camp Michigamme. He is also collecting pictures and material for the book and to display at the camp. Especially needed to fill the gaps are group

pictures from the late 1940s and early 1950s along with any newsletters from that period. Also, snapshots from the early years would be most welcome. Copies can be made and originals returned if desired. For information please contact: Alan Larsen, 21646 Petticoat Lake Road, Michigamme, MI 49861 ∙ 906-272-2711 ∙ or email [email protected]

Praise Team Update: After prayer and consideration, we have decided to take a short break for the remainder of 2013, and begin rehearsing again in January 2014. We would like to thank everyone for their support this past year and a half, and would appreciate your prayers during the next few months. May God bless you all abundantly!!~The Praise Team (Greg Vieau, Kathy Heilman, Janet Schaefer, Pastor Dave Wallis, Roger Moore, Kathy Plaunt & Elizabeth Clemens).

Though the words are simple, They come from the heart… Thank you ♥Pastor Dave & our Church of the Straits Family – Thank you so much for the gift card. This helped with our

expenses while in Traverse City with Katrina. Also, Pastor Dave for keeping in touch and visiting with us in T.C. To all – thank you for your prayers. We saw firsthand the power your prayers had. We love you all. ~Nelson & Denise Thompson

Best Wishesto Noelle Clemens and Austin Martinon their wedding September 28, 2013. Congratulations to Elizabeth Clemens,

Wayne Clemens and Kim Martin.Pastor Dave will be facilitating a D ISCIPLE I class the beginning of October. Classes will run for 17 weeks with a break at Thanksgiving and Christmas. D ISCIPLE I is a 34 week study of the whole Bible. The purpose of D ISCIPLE I may

be summarized in the words of Ephesians 4:12: “to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.” The second half of the study will continue next fall. If you are interested, please contact the church office or sign-up in Fellowship Hall. Let us know if Sunday evening works for you, or another week night. After we see what works best for people, it will be announced in the bulletin.

REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE In Disciple III, the class will study twelve prophets.  We will learn the context of their messages (i.e. what was going on in the world) from a series of maps, posters, and a historical chart, as they relate to our readings of Scripture.  We will gain understanding of how God was at work when he called each prophet and what the results were. Each session will conclude with a discussion about what it means to be an obedient community today. An introduction to the material has been scheduled for Thursday, October 31 at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of the Straits.  A one-week break will occur at Thanksgiving and a three-week break at Christmas.  Classes will be completed by late March 2014.  This class requires a two-year commitment.  Enrollment is open to anyone at this time.  Call Jo Ann Rinehart at 231-436-8131.

A Prayer for Guidance Lord, take me where you want me to go;

Let me meet who you want me to meet; Tell me what you want me to say; and keep me out of your way. ~Rev. Mychal Judge, FDNY Chaplain and the first Official casualty on 9/11.

Recognition Day

It’s kind of funny the way Labor Day is celebrated in Mackinaw City. For most people it is a vacation day to relax, grill out, and just enjoy a non-stressed filled day. For many who live here it is a day of extreme busy-ness and work. Whether it is volunteering to park cars for the Lions club, working overtime in a local business or selling pop and water for the Fire Dept. near the bridge, many are busy. Maybe Labor Day for Mackinaw City is actually on Tuesday or Wednesday, not Monday.

The word “labor” conjures up many different thoughts from many different people. To some it brings thoughts of Genesis 3:17 when God said to Adam, “Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat of it’, Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it.” That doesn’t paint a happy picture but a toilsome one! In the same chapter God tells Eve that she’ll have pain in “labor” (giving birth). Interesting word usage, isn’t it!?!

This portrayal described above is the result of “the fall”! When sin entered the world so did a vivid picture of “self”! Remember in Genesis 3:7 when Adam and Eve recognized their nakedness and they felt shame for the first time. They now were more aware of themselves than ever before and as a result, everything they did was viewed through the scope of “me”! “What is in it for me” became the new mantra! Even labor was no longer a joyous expression of love for God but a toilsome task that needed to be done.

How could laboring be an expression of joy again? Only through Christ could this once again be possible. So what about the joy of “labor”? Whether it is in the particular occupation we are in, or in the volunteer endeavor we are pursuing, we can enjoy what we do. In an old hymn we sing it says, “Let us labor for the master from the dawn till setting sun. Let us talk of all his wondrous love and care…” This statement should bring joy to our hearts as we pursue this “labor of love”! Instead of burning us out it can re-energize us. If our hearts are in the right place, we seek opportunities to serve God.

Can we see the opportunities in our secular work world to labor with joy in spite of our co-workers or boss? Can we see the opportunities in our church work to labor with joy? The occasions for service abound. We still need two Sunday School teachers for early elementary and pre-elementary classes. We still need nursery attendants during worship and ushers, liturgists, refreshment providers and new committee members as we move on to another calendar year soon. Are you willing to do it as one who wants to labor for Jesus or are you content to let someone else to do it and rob you of the joy and blessing yourself.

Praying for open hearts of service,

Pastor Dave
