Hardware:DAQ: From KNU: Flatscreens for SCX + Remaining monies (400 kCHF) An amount close to 400 kCHF has been paid (due to exchange rate). Upscoping Forward RPC system: Pledges made. Monies to be given as cash. Finalising the project.

Offline, Computing: ~ 2 FTE working on core offline and computing tasks (M&O Cat B)

Physics:Many scientists (senior, postdoc and students) are currently working at CERN. Currently discussing how to reinforce contributions to commissioning and operation of RPC system.

Can look forward to an effective participation from the Korean scientists. Funding to be based at CERN is helping a great deal.

CMS Status: Summary

After the cosmics run ended (Nov ‘08), the detector was opened for a broad program of carefully selected maintenance and repair activities, as well as the installation of the preshower subdetector on both endcaps. Work is progressing according to the schedule laid down in Nov. 2008.

The highlights are: the completion of the repairs to the barrel muon DT system the removal, repair, and re-insertion of the forward pixel system the completion, installation and commissioning of the preshower (ES) much progress with the maintenance and repair of other sub-systems good progress with the revision of the tracker cooling plant the maintenance of the general cooling and electrical systems (done before Xmas)

Re-commissioning of CMS detector and full data-flow path has begun, with mid-week-global runs every two weeks interspersed with final maintenance and consolidation activities. Powering of the tracker awaits completion of the revision of the tracker cooling plant. Aiming to take a long cosmics run with field-on in July, using the online and offline software releases foreseen for running with beam in Q409.

RE+ chambers were switched on in the cavern for the first time beginning of September 2008. HV was applied after about 100 gas volumes exchange. The gas flow was set to (1 volume)/ (2 hour). In a few days a significant increase of current was reported on several channels.

RE chambers show larger than expected sensitivity to temperature. Similar measurements on the way for barrel chambers.

Increase of current at P5 partially reproduced at ISR. Careful investigation continuing to spot other causes.

Temperature stabilization may the key aspect.

Stability of cavern humidity and temperature should be achieved for a safe RPC running. An installation campaign of T and RH sensors (both environmental and gas) has been launched.

Preparation for 2009/2010 RunThe next run will be much longer than the originally foreseen first run. Considerable planning - to understand the implications (person-power, spares, computing resources, expert availability, etc.) in order to ensure the sustainability of all activities of CMS during and after the 2009/2010 long run.

Upscopes and Upgrades – SLHC

Phase 1 (2-3 1034, foresee long shutdown 2013/2014 ?) “Shovel Ready”: Forward RPC system, ME4/2, some items of infrastructure (e.g. YE4, etc) Replacement of the pixels system (TDR in about a year), changes deemed necessary after first running (these could include e.g. some transducers in the HCAL system). These items have previously been brought to the attention of the RRB

Phase II (reaching 1035 cm-2s-1) Replacement of the CMS Inner Tracker A few areas where decisions have to be taken (requiring R&D): e.g. Tracking Tracking in L1, ECAL/HCAL/Trigger, End-cap calorimetry in general.

Encouraging CMS Centres Worldwide

• CMS Centre - what is it? – Information and communications focal point in institute with LHC / CMS

displays, Web GUIs, video links, and outreach.

– Facilitates remote participation and acts as a local focal point for CMS work and outreach, and to improve communications with all CMS collaborators.

• How is it used?– Sub-detector DQM, calibration, analysis, computing ops, outreach (maybe

some remote shifts if running is stable) – DQM, computing

– Cost: General costs + 2 consoles – about 15 kCHF

CMS Financial Plan – 3 Steps

Reminder: CMS global financial plan up to 2010 was submitted to the RRB in Oct 2006 comprising 3 steps to complete the CMS detector. Their status is given below.

Step 1 Activities (complete low luminosity detector, 17.5 MCHF) No change from Nov08 RRB

Step 2 Activities (complete the DAQ/Filter Farm, 8.4 MCHF )No expenses have yet been incurred. Likely to be able to attain full DAQ/Filter Farm capability using remaining Step 2 funds (4.74 MCHF have been used to cover deficit in Step 1 as reported in the Nov’08 RRB) and replacement slices funded via M&O Cat A.

Step 3 Activities (upgrade to design-luminosity detector, 16.6 MCHF).Likely that some activities covered by Step 3 funds will start this year (e.g. upscope of forward RPC system)

Looking Ahead

Prepare for long and sustained periods of running and for upgrades.

Continue, and reinforce, the CMS Engineering Centre, in future including aspects of electrical and electronic systems. This centre has existed since the beginning of CMS and has been vital in engineering/delivering the detector Electronics Integration Centre - Bldg 904: Vital centre for Upgrading plans. Plan to have a full-functionality DAQ/Trigger setup with complete electronics chains of sub-detectors so that improvements can be thoroughly tested prior to installation in Point_5. This centre has been extensively used to test electronics chains, burn-in power supplies etc. It was especially important before USC was delivered. Funding: The question of how to finance these activities is being addressed and a proposal shall be made at the October 2009 RRB.
