TRACTO-TECHNIQUES AT INTERMAT

F rom 16 to 21 April 2012 the INTERMAT event in Paris will once again open its doors. The sister company of TRACTO-TECHNIK, TRACTO-TECHNIQUES S.a.r.l., will also be

participating on a 250 m2 outdoor stand (E2D 024) where all TT’s latest bore rigs and systems for trenchless installations will be on show.

One of the highlights will be the GRUNDORAM soil displacement hammers, operated with compressed air, which are already immensely popular in France for the underground production of house connections, especially for gas, electricity, water and glass-fibre service lines. From the main line to the house there are often only a few metres, but usually with obstacles such as wall foundations, stairways or tree roots. It is also important to look out for adjacent service lines close to the bore path. The twin-stroke method provides a high propulsion precision for the non-steerable soil displacement hammer. If you do not want to take any risks, then a sonde can be installed into the head of the hammer to constantly control the propulsion and position of the soil displacement hammer. This improves the application safety immensely, as in case of any deviation from the intended bore path, it is therefore possible to retrieve the hammer in reverse mode immediately.

The GRUNDODRILL 15 XP is claimed to be in a completely different

league. This steerable boring unit can install HDPE pipes up to ND500 without any interruptions at all, over lengths of up to 300 m. The semi-automatic bore mode allows for a quicker and more com-fortable completion of your bore tasks. This machine has also found numerous users in France, thanks to its reliable operation method, for applications when crossing under rivers, but also for road and railway embankments.

For the renewal of old pipes the GRUNDOBURST pipe cracking method is an ideal solution, which can be applied for replacing worn out pressure and sewage pipes made of almost every pipe material, with pipes of the same size or even larger diameters. With the new additional device BURSTFORM it is now possible to pull in HDPE long pipe lengths via a revision shaft (diameter ≥ 1,000 mm) into the old pipe. The special feature is the low cross-section loss due to the new pipes being close-tight to the old pipe wall and also due to the limitation of civil engineering work. ANGLIAN WATER MAKES MAJOR INVESTMENT TO FUTURE-PROOF AGEING SEWERS

A nglian Water is investing £365,000 in a project to reline over 5 km of sewerage pipes in Horncastle, Mablethorpe and Withern, UK.

Improvements to the area’s sewer network are underway after work began recently in Mablethorpe. The scheme is set to be completed by Spring 2012. The project will strengthen the sewerage network serving the area and dramatically reduce the risk of a sewer collapse, which is often costly and disruptive to repair.

Rather than digging down to replace existing ageing sewers, in this scheme pipes will be relined with a soft felt ‘sock’ impregnated with resin. This lining is fed through the pipes while it is soft. Once in place, steam is pumped in, reacting with the resin to make it set and create a robust rigid lining. This reduces the need to dig up roads and minimises disruption for local communities.

In some places, where the pipe has deteriorated or partially collapsed the section of pipe will be replaced before it is lined. Whilst the technology being used will reduce the need for digging, in Horncastle some road closures will be required to allow safe access to manholes. In other places temporary traffic lights will be needed to allow the work to be carried out quickly and safely. Access to residents will be maintained throughout.

Sarah D’Arcy, from Anglian Water said: “Maintaining the structural integrity of the sewerage system is vital to prevent flooding and blockages. If a sewer collapses then it can cause lots of disruption and unpleasantness for local people. Our aim is to prevent this from happening. Unfortunately, that does mean that there may be some short-term disruption as a result of this work and we are sorry for this. But this is vital work to help prevent future problems and we hope customers will understand. These sewers have performed well for many decades and this project will help ensure they continue to do so.” Website: www.anglianwater.co.uk

IMPROVING THE SEWERAGE NETWORK IN PERRANPORTH

A £300,000 scheme to improve the sewerage network in Perranporth, Cornwall, UK is due to start in January 2012.

South West Water and its H5O partners will be assessing the condition of the network in the town. This preliminary work will include digging trial holes in four locations to determine the depth, location and state of the sewer.

The work, which was originally planned for July 2011, was postponed to avoid affecting Perranporth's vital tourist trade.

Following discussions with the parish council and local businesses, work on the trial holes started on 16 January 2012 and is expected to take two weeks. No roads will be closed as a result of the work.

Depending on the results of the investigatory work, it is planned to return to Perranporth in March 2012 to line the sewer. The scheme is part of a five-year £42 million investment in the sewer network across the region to renovate sewers identified as being at risk of collapse and to alleviate potential flooding problems.

Project manager Steve Cross said: “This is a real investment in Perranporth. Without this necessary work, the sewer network will continue to deteriorate. That can lead to collapses - which cause pollution, flooding and odour. We will be working hard to minimise disruption to the public and businesses as far as possible while completing our investigations and the following essential works."

A further £220,000 scheme to improve the sewerage network in Perranporth is planned for February and March, when South West Water will be lining sewers in the Bolingey area of the town to prevent ground water infiltrating the pipes. Website: www.southwestwater.co.uk

NEL PIPELINE CROSSINGS USE DYNAMIC RAMMING

T he NEL, North European Natural Gas Pipeline belonging to WinGas in Kassel, Germany

distributes natural gas arriving from Russia to Germany and the rest of Northwest Europe. The natural gas storage unit in Rheden is the final arrival point for the gas pipeline, which runs all the way from Lubmin. Stretching over a 440 km route from the North of Germany, the pipeline has to cross beneath countless roads, rivers and railway tracks.

The contract for 2 construction packages with a length of over 120 km was won by the contractor Bonatti S.p.A. of Parma, Italy. Within this framework, subcontractor Dalcai Horizontale Wegboringen BV was the highly recommended specialist company for horizontal bore techniques. The company, based in Nijverdal in Holland, carried out three road crossings using the dynamic ramming method.

DALCAI has been specialising in the dynamic ramming field for pipeline constructions since 1999. Over the past 2 years alone, DALCAI has carried out more than 11 km of pipeline installation using the technique to ram steel pipes with a compressed air operated steel pipe rammer, manufactured by TRACTO-TECHNIK of Lennestadt, Germany, which has enabled it to gain extensive experience and the relevant know-how, as well as the necessary routine to complete this type of bore task. DALCAI’s managing director, Jan-Willem Dalvoorde commented: “The success of the task depends on the machine technology. The rammers must be able to withstand enormous strains, if you consider, that the strongest rammer worldwide, the APOLLO can produce a single stroke energy of up to 40,500 Nm.”

The three road crossings were situated close to the A24 motorway in Mecklenburg Vorpommern approximately 80 km east of Hamburg. The crossing included a 34 m length in Perdöhl, a 40 m length in Albertinenhof as well as a length of 44 m in Schwartow.

A decision was made to apply the dynamic ramming method because it is possible to work quicker and at less expense than with a thrust-bore method, combined with a spiral conveyor. The ramming process does not require any thrust wall for resistance or heavy jacking frames. The technique offers a stable directional control and is also applicable to lower ground cover limits. The pipe length, which is welded together beforehand, can be pushed forward with a propulsion speed of up to 10 m/h, which means that road crossings can be completed within one working day. With the thrust-bore method, where only single pipe sections can be jacked forward, up to 5 to 7 working days would have to be allowed to complete the same task.

Contrary to the open trench installation of steel pipes, which are normally coated by PE (at 1,420 mm diameter x 22.7 mm wall thickness), steel pipes sheathed with glass-fibre were applied on the rammed road crossings. Three individual pipe lengths, each with a length of 18 m, were welded together to make up the complete crossing length. An initial pressure test was carried out and then the pipe was placed on the prepared ramming base on site.

At the first crossing site, DALCAI utilised the APOLLO rammer model with a strike energy of 40,500 Nm. The compressed air was supplied by two compressors with 63 m³ and 45 m³ air flow rates respectively. Cotter segments are generally applied for these tasks, which prevent the product pipe from flaring during the ramming process, so that the pipes can be welded perfectly together face to face. Furthermore, the form of the cotter segments allows the strike

energy to be transferred evenly into the pipe length. The four-part segments can be quickly installed and fixed in place. At the same time two HDPE pipes of ND125 were fixed into an appliance on the steel pipe. These pipes were pushed in with the steel pipe and used as a spare empty pipe and also for control cabling.

The APOLLO ramming hammer was then placed in position and the compressed air supply set up to enable installation of the pipe length. A cutting shoe on the first pipe leading edge strengthens and protects the pipe wall during the installation process and minimises any casing friction occurring on the pipe surface. In the compact sandy soils of the site the casing friction was very high for certain periods during the ramming process. This did not however prevent a smooth pipe installation. The pipe length leading edge arrived on the other side of the road, surrounded by an alleyway of oak trees after only 2½ hours. The installation process was complete.

The site set up was then dismantled for transport to the next jobsite. This included the use of a high pressure jetting vehicle with 20 m³ volume capacity in order to remove the spoil from the ramming run out of the pipe. A jetting head bored through the soil in two steps, rinsing the sandy soil out of the pipe.

With an additional pressure test of the installed pipe length, which followed the ramming and cleaning, the bore installation was completed.

The ramming work was carried out using the following working steps: • Welding the pipes together to produce one pipe length plus a first pressure test • Starting to operate the water container in a 4 m deep trench situated in groundwater • Installing the steel pipe, coated with glass-fibre inside the prepared trench • Preparing the pipe length by attaching the cutting shoe at the front of the pipe.

The compressor used to power the ramming hammer.

• Attaching retainer device for the carriage of two empty HDPE pipes of ND 125 (Retaining control lines)

• Application of the 4 cotter segments for the even force induction and to prevent the pipe from flaring

• Positioning the rammer with a base and connection of the compressed air via two compressed air hoses

• Rinsing out the soil over 4 hours with 120 m³ water, pumped out of a nearby river and transported to the site on a trailer.

• After the complete pumping process and disposal of the rinsed out soil a final pressure test of the installed pipe length was carried out, which was then welded to the steel pipes in the open trench either side of the crossing.

All three installations were carried out in 3 successive working days, as the working sequence was coordinated extremely efficiently, and despite the multi-lingual team-work that was required (Italian, German and Dutch) the work was carried out and completed without problems. CHALLENGING WATER PIPE REHAB KEEPS THE OIL FLOWING IN MEXICO

P erma-Liner™ Industries, Inc. recently announced that it was involved in a

successful project to rehabilitate some 1,834 m (6,016 linear feet) of 610 mm (24 in) diameter water pipe using its cured in place pipe lining systems with its distributor in Mexico. The project was completed eight days ahead of schedule!

Perma-Liner™ of Mexico is now pursuing work comprising 24 km (15 miles) of 200 mm to 910 mm (8 in to 36 in) diameter pipes to reline using the Perma-Main™ continuous lining ‘Top Gun’ system.

On the Mexico project the water pipe requiring rehabilitation serves the PEMEX oil refinery in Cadereyta N.L. Mexico which is located some 35 km (22 miles) from Monterrey, Mexico’s industrial capital. The refinery covers over 1,200 acres and is strategically located to supply the needs of Northeast Mexico. Its construction started in 1975 and it has the capacity to process 235,000 barrels of oil per day.

Since Cadereyta is located in a dry desert area, local water supply is very scarce and it has to be maximised. To supply the water needs of the refinery, wastewater from Monterrey is treated and then transported to Cadereyta. There are several pipes that feed the treatment plant, but the main pipeline comes from Guadalupe, which is a very important municipality of Monterrey´s metropolitan area. This pipes run below several neighbourhoods, main streets and even below the wide Santa Catarina River.

Having suffered some leaks in the past that affected the surrounding neighbours, PEMEX wanted a trenchless solution to prevent further leakage that was permanent and that would not disturb the everyday life of this busy area. That is why a CIPP solution was selected. ADF de Mexico using the PERMA LINER solution was then chosen to perform the rehab work.

The host pipeline comprised a carbon steel pipe material of 610 mm (24 in) diameter which was required to operate at about 55 psi pressure. So, the solution had to be one that offered a pressure operation solution

The project had many challenges; it was located on heavy traffic highways and residential areas, there was a very wide river that has to be crossed. Not only this, but because the oil refinery had to keep producing during the rehabilitation operation, access to the pipe was limited to a maximum 5 days shut-off period followed by 7 days of normal operation. Without this installation regime the

refinery, which required the water supply to operate at all, could not stand for more than a week without water supplies.

Completion of the contract was achieved and included fulfilling all the client requirements and time limitations.

Ultimately, the project was delivered on time and to high standards of quality, thanks for the team effort by ADF de Mexico and PERMA LINER. Website: www.perma-liner.com

HDD IN THE BALTIC STATES

H orizontal directional drilling (HDD) is an internationally-accepted

underground construction technology, a versatile trenchless procedure for placing utility pipe and cable in the ground.

Agio Ehitus, based in Tallinn, the capital and largest city in Estonia on the banks of the Gulf of Finland, has specialized in directional drilling for 11 years, serving a variety of clients in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The Lonely Planet travel guide describes Tallinn as one of Europe’s most enchanting cities, a blend of the medieval and modern, with narrow, cobbled streets set beneath the spires of 14th century churches, and a wild mix of restaurants, cafés, boutiques and nightclubs tucked in the carved stone walls. Tallinn is ranked among the top 10 digital cities in the world.

“Projects in the region have included installations for telecommunications networks, electrical cable, and water and sewer systems,” said Alexander Nikonovich of Agio Ehitus. In most instances, Agio Ehitus works as a subcontractor for the HDD portions of the works. Directional drilling is described by Agio as the ‘close’ method of construction as opposed to the ‘open’ (excavation) method of construction.

“Project owners in Estonia and surrounding countries are well aware of the benefits of the method,” said Nikonovich. “The close method is low cost and provides a short timeframe for work completion,” he said. “It provides a reduction of soil transportation and utilisation expenses, as well as that of labour input and prevents hold-ups in traffic. One can also avoid damage of existing communications that can occur when digging the soil.”

The technology is well suited for projects in city areas where it is important not to damage surface improvements and interrupt normal activities. It also is used in open areas for crossing rivers and other bodies of water and in environmentally-sensitive areas where other types of construction cannot be used.

Currently, Agio operates two Ditch Witch JT3020 All Terrain (AT) directional drilling machines which employ a dual-pipe, mechanical drilling drive systems which enable the relative small machines to work effectively through rocky formations. Two recent projects illustrate the versatility of HDD’s close method of construction.

TALLIN PROJECT A project in Tallinn to install a 110 kV power cable required 15 bores to install a bundle of PE casings, including three 200 mm (8 in) diameter pipes for electrical cable, and one 38 mm (1½ in) diameter pipe for fibre optic cable. The average bore length was 150 m (492 ft) with the shortest being 80 m (262 ft) and the longest 200 m (656 ft).

The route of the bores was under the footway adjacent to Peterburi Road in the city which permitted the placing the ducts without interrupting traffic. Subsurface soil conditions were limestone. Depths varied with the deepest section being 4 m (13 ft). The AT system effectively bored through the limestone using a tri-cone TCI bit. The pilot hole was first enlarged with a 300 mm (12 in) diameter Rockmaster backream, then a 585 mm (23 in) diameter backreamer, followed by pulling in the PE pipes behind a 510 mm (20 in) diameter Kodiak reamer. The 15 installations were completed over a period of five months.

Further to this, a project in Ogre, Latvia required one 200 m (656 ft) bore to install a 315 mm (12.4 in) diameter PE pipe for drinking water beneath a river. Subsurface conditions were rocky soil. At the deepest point, the pilot hole reached 11.9 m (39 ft). A 140 mm (5½ in) diameter tri-cone bit was used for the pilot bore with the pilot hole being enlarged with a 406 mm (16 in) diameter backreamer.

JT3020 AT The Ditch Witch JT3020 AT is a compact, self-contained HDD unit that develops 13,600 kg (30,000 lb) of pullback, 5,400 Nm (4,000 ftlb) of spindle torque, and maximum spindle speed of 225 rpm.

The Ditch Witch JT3020 All Terrain (AT) directional drilling machine installing cable ducts in Tallin.

Mounted on rubber tracks, the equipment easily moves across paved surfaces and landscaped areas with minimal disturbance, as well as across open country.

The AT dual-pipe, mechanical drilling system uses an inner pipe to drive a rock bit, and an outer pipe to provide rotary torque and to steer the downhole tool when drilling the pilot bore. The AT system delivers maximum downhole horsepower and operates on low volumes of drilling fluid and enables relatively compact equipment to drill through rock without a mud motor, something other equipment in its class are unable to do. All Terrain models also are productive in almost all types of non-rocky soils.

In addition to HDD construction, Agio Ehitus replaces failing segments of sewer pipelines using the pipebursting process by which a tool is pulled through a section of old pipe, cracking and bursting the pipe as it proceeds while simultaneously pulling in a section of new pipe.

Agio Ehitus is licensed for construction and repairs on water supply and sanitary sewer systems, external heating systems, general construction work, and construction supervision.

Ditch Witch products are sold and serviced by a worldwide dealer organization. Ditch Witch of the Baltics, Vilnius, Lithuania, is the dealer for Agio Ehitus. Website: www.ditchwitch.com

SAFE, SAFER, SAFEST… DATA LOGGING CABLE AVOIDANCE TOOLS

J ust released by C.Scope is a brand new range of digital Cable Avoidance

Tools that offers an innovative approach to raising the standard of cable detecting prior to any excavation taking place.

The CXL-DLB, DXL-DLB and MXL-DLB are data logging versions of the popular CXL, DXL and MXL Cable Avoidance Tools and automatically record exactly ‘WHEN’ and ‘HOW’ they are used each time. This ‘record of use’ provides three important new safety benefits for organisations when digging in congested streets.

Firstly, in the unfortunate event of a cable strike, information stored on the C.Scope Cable Avoidance Tool can be used to identify ‘IF’ it was used and ‘HOW COMPETENTLY’ it was used immediately prior to the strike.

Secondly, analysing the usage pattern of ALL Cable Avoidance Tools over a week, a month or even a six-month period will reveal how consistently they are actually used out in the field, thus identifying ‘WHEN’ retraining may be required.

Thirdly, the specific Locator training needs of individual staff can be accurately identified allowing training courses to be tailored to provide maximum benefit.

C.Scope data logging Cable Avoidance Tools are used in exactly the same way as a standard Cable Avoidance Tool and so operators will not need to be retrained in order to upgrade to the new models.

What is different is that, for the first time, it will be possible to truly understand how effectively Cable Location equipment is being utilised at every excavation no matter how remote the location.

The ‘record of use’ is quickly and easily transferred from the Cable Avoidance Tool onto a Windows PC using the Free C.Scope Toolkit or onto a Mobile Phone using a C.Scope 'App'.

Using the C.Scope APP on a Mobile Phone with a C.Scope data logging Cable Avoidance Tool provides a unique additional capability to enable GPS information to be added to the 'record of use', as the operator uses the equipment.

Now it is possible to have the 'WHERE' information as well as the 'WHEN' and 'HOW'. The system can even display on Google Maps giving a complete record of an operator’s activity. Website: www.cscope.co.uk

MCLAUGHLIN STRONG ARM ATTACHMENT CARRIES THE LOAD

M cLaughlin Group, a leading manufacturer of vacuum

excavat ion equipment, has introduced the Strong Arm — a heavy-duty steel arm from the vacuum excavator that helps carry the weight of the vacuum excavation hose.

“Strong Arm is an economical option to save labour during vacuum excavation work,” said Dave Gasmovic, president of McLaughlin Group. “The tank-mounted attachment carries the weight of the hose during operation versus the operator having to carry the load of the hose, plus the debris being vacuumed. This helps reduce operator fatigue and improve productivity.”

Strong Arm provides 200o rotation and extends 1.8 m (6 ft) from the tank, providing a wide work range in any application.

The Strong Arm attachment is currently available on all McLaughlin 1900 and 3000 l (500 and 800 gal) models. Strong Arm can also be added to an existing McLaughlin vacuum system. McLaughlin vacuum excavators are available through the Vermeer dealer network. Website: www.mightymole.com

RESPONDING TO GROWING TRENCHLESS INDUSTRY NEEDS

R esponding to the needs of contractors, engineers and municipalities with

growing recognition for the economic and environmental advantages of trenchless pipe installation and replacement, CertainTeed Corporation is expanding its Certa-Lok™ C900 restrained-joint PVC pipe product line to include an integral bell design option. The company is also adding a 355 mm (14 in) diameter option to its line of Certa-Lok C905 RJ restrained-joint pipe to meet the growing industry demand for larger size water and sewer pipe system applications.

Available in 100 mm 150 mm and 200 mm (4, 6 and 8 in) diameters, Certa-Lok C900 RJIB (Restrained Joint Integral Bell) features CertainTeed’s time and field-proven mechanical pipe joining system, which utilises a combination of precision-machined grooves and a nylon spline to provide exceptional tensile strength in pulling or pushing operations. Rounding out the design, a flexible elastomeric gasket within the integral bell provides a solid pressure-certified hydraulic seal.

Unlike HDPE or fusible PVC pipe, Certa-Lok C900 RJIB does not require costly fusion or solvent welding and can be assembled in real time as pullback continues, eliminating the need to string out long lengths of pipe within or beyond the work zone.

“Certa-Lok C900 RJIB was designed and subsequently tested to meet the intense performance requirements of municipal water and wastewater system use. At the same time, special attention was focused on clearly understanding the environment of the most demanding trenchless applications, such as static pipe bursting and horizontal directional drilling to ensure that the product met or exceeded the physical requirements of those applications,” said John Coogan, marketing and development manager for CertainTeed’s

The new 355 mm (14 in) diameter Certa-Lok C905 RJ restrained-joint pipe complements the company’s 400 mm (16 in) diameter C905 product and marks a verifiable company commitment to product line expansion with larger diameter pipe solutions for projects involving underground drinking water mains, reclaimed water and force main sewers.

“These additions strengthen CertainTeed’s complete line of durable, reliable and easy-to-use restrained joint PVC pipe, providing municipalities, engineers and contractors with the best set of tools for the job,” added Coogan. Website: www.certa-lok.com
