Duringthe1980’s,SP’sagingfleetofSD40’swereindireneedofrebuilding.TheywentthroughSP’s“GRIP”programwhichupgradedthewholelocomotive,becomingSD40R’s.Bythelate1980’s,theoriginalSPequippedgyralightsbecameexpensivetomaintainandwereremovedtosavecosts.By1994,somegotrepaintedintoSP’sthen-new“speedlettered”scheme.Aroundthissametime,SPcontractedMKtorebuildnumerousSD40locomotivecorestobasicallya“new”version,aSD40M-2.MKaddednewfeaturestothesesuchasalternatingfrontditchlights,Timkenrollerbearings,andcomputerizedwheelslipcontrol.Theywereallusedsystemwideandfoundinmanytypesofservice.

Intheearly1990’s,UtahRailwaywaslookingforreliablesecondhandpower.TheyleasedsomeMKrebuiltSD40s,mostlyfromC&Oheritage.Thesewereputintounitcoalservice,usuallyinsetsofupto4units,sometimesmore.

WhentheCSXTransportationmergerwascompletedin1987,CSXinherited138SD40locomotives. Withplanstoretiretheiragingfleets, CSX decidedtoupgrade125SD40stoEMD’sDash-2standards.Therebuildprogramwouldmakestructuralandcorrosionrepairs,andperformgeneraloverhaulworktotheSD40locomotives.After25unitswerefirstrebuiltinthe“Stealth”scheme,CSXT#8410wasthefirstunittoberebuiltandpaintedintheupdated“YN1”paintscheme,outshoppedonNov.10th,1989.Thispaintschemeintroducedyellowhuestoboththefrontandrearofthelocomotive,alongwithaddingayellowtrimtothesidesill,aidinginvisibility.47morerebuildswerecompletedintheYN1schemeupuntilMarch23,1990.AttheendofMarch,twofinalrebuildswerereleasedfromtheHuntingtonshopsinthebrandnewYN2scheme,completingtheprogram.ManyoftheseSD40-2rebuildsretainedtheir“YN1”paintschemewellintothelate2000’s.
