Check it out at facebook.com/traveltodaynz The proliferation in new flights to China and associated fare deals is seeing the country once again becoming a destination of choice for Kiwi holidaymakers, who are hitting new records when it comes to overseas travel. According to the latest New Zealand short-term departure statistics, out today, New Zealand residents took 239,400 overseas trips in Jun, growth of 8% on Jun 2015. Year-to-date, Ki- wis have taken a record 2.46 million overseas trips, up 6% year-on-year. China was one of four destinations to see the highest growth in Jun (along- side Australia, the Cook Islands and Vietnam), when the number of de- partures increased 23.6%; and for the 12 months to Jun, departures are up 11.4% to 91,220. “We’re most definitely seeing growth in line with [the statistics],” says John McGough of China Travel Service, which represents China National Tourism in New Zealand. While a lot of growth in the numbers is VFR and corporate travel, McGough says it’s be- ing reflected in the leisure market too. “With the amount of flights going out, there’s now over 50 flights a week heading out from New Zea- land to China and that’s grow- ing, there’s other airlines showing interest as well. Value for money wise, and from the safety aspect too, New Zealanders are looking at China as a destination to holiday.” All those flights mean better airfares, which are also driving interest. “Our tour packages have never been so competitive and that’s helped by air- line partners as well,” says McGough. Increased confidence from the trade in selling China is also helping. “I think that travel agents are getting better educated and have more inter- est, and there’s some good suppliers out there, us and our competitors, that specialise in China and they’re providing that support which is finally paying off.” China National Tourism is looking to grow interest in destinations out- side the ‘Golden Triangle’ (Beijing, Xian and Shanghai), and in Aug will be bringing some 30 suppliers to New Zealand for an expo in Auck- land. EK Adds Milan CapacityE m i r a t e s p l a n s t o i n c r e a s e capacity on its Dubai-Milan route with the deployment of a second daily A380, enabling more connec-tions with services to and from New Zealand. The migration from a Boe-ing 777-300ER to the flagship double decker represents a capacity increase of 1834 seats per week between the two cities, commencing 01 Oct.

Mexico On SaleClients looking to head to Mexico from the US, can make the most of Alaska Airlines’ fares, advises World Aviation Systems. For example, Los Angeles to San Jose del Cabo is from $569, with double daily flights on offer.

Ai r New Z e a la nd p ass enger numbers increased 4.8% in Jun but group load factors fell slightly as capacity increases outpaced de-mand growth on all except Ameri-cas and UK routes.Overall NZ carried 1,215,000 pas-sengers in Jun, up 4.8% on Jun 2015. Revenue passenger kilometres were 6.5% higher on a capacity increase of 7.7%; and the average load factor fell 0.9 percentage points to 80.8%.On short-haul routes, passenger numbers increased 4.5%, and de-mand was up 4.9% while capacity increased 6.1%, with the average load falling 1.0 points to 80.9%. Domestic demand and capacity was up 7.2% and 9.8% respectively, leading load factors to drop 1.9 points to 77.7%; and Tasman/Pacific loads were large-ly flat at 82.6%, as demand grew 3.7% on capacity growth of 4.2%.Long-haul passenger numbers were up 6.5%, and demand increased 7.7% on capacity of 8.8%. Load fac-tors overall on long-haul routes were down 0.9 points to 80.7%.On Americas/UK routes, demand in-creased 9.4% while the launch of new Houston and Buenos Aires services saw capacity jump 8.9%. However reduced frequency to Los Angeles partially offset this capacity boost, and loads increased 0.4 percentage points to 85.9%.The launch of new Ho Chi Minh

flights meant capacity also spiked on Asia/Japan/Singapore routes, and was up 8.7%. However this wasn’t matched by demand, which grew 4.6%, and load factors fell 2.9 per-centage points to 72.5%.

. . . Yields DownGroup-wide yields for the financial year to date were down 1.9% on the same period last year, with short-haul yields down 2.3% while long-haul yields were up 1.4%. Removing the impact of foreign exchange, group-wide yields were down 5.7%.

APX Is Turning 60It’s undergone a few name and ownership changes, not to mention witnessed some significant changes in the travel indus-try, and now APX Travel Manage-ment is celebrating its 60 year anni-versary.The business that’s now APX started in CHC in 1956 as a traditional travel agency, and since 1981 has specialised in corporate travel. In that time the travel industry has changed signifi-cantly, says APX, but it puts its longev-ity down to a commitment to hiring and retaining the best staff. They in-clude international travel consultant Debby Mackley, who’s been with APX since 1973 (the same year APX chief executive Andrew Dale was born). Mackley (pictured) started with APX typing up itineraries, vouchers and correspondence. “We even had to send telexes to hotels to make bookings and when we made airline bookings, we’d look the flights up in the books and write them down before contacting the airlines to make the bookings—it took hours,” she says.APX says investing in new technology balanced by a continued focus on per-sonal interaction is another reason it’s stuck around. The company is hosting events over the coming weeks to cel-ebrate its milestone.
