    Trusting or TryingW

hen washing a childs hair, you tell him to puthis head back so he will not get shampoo in his

eyes. His natural reaction is to put his head forward andrub his eyes every time the water starts to flow. Thisillustrates a tremendous principle: the difference be-tween trusting and trying.

This same principle is the heart of the matter towhich Paul has been referring in the opening chaptersof his letter to the Galatians. The conflict between twoalternate roads to righteousness: Trusting or Trying. How does one please God? What makes a person trulya Christian trying to act in a way that seems pure and

Godly, or trusting in a Savior who paid the full pricefor sin?

Let us begin with the fact that these two roads havea different prescription: law verses faith. In Galatians3:2, Paul wrote, This only would I learn of you, Re-ceived ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by thehearing of faith? Paul is asking a leading question be-cause he knows that they received the Spirit when they

believed the Gospel that Jesus died for their sins; hewas there when it happened. These other teachers whoclaimed that they must follow the external requirementsof the law what to eat, what to wear, how to look they came along later with their new prescription.

Paul is asking them, Which prescription, faith orthe law, led to your receiving the Spirit and salvation? The law is not able to produce salvation, nor to changehuman hearts; all it can do is show the need for salva-tion.

    Student Testimony

My name is Luke Duncan and the Lord Jesus

Christ saved me at the age of seven. As a filthy,

seven-year-old sinner, the Holy Spirit convicted me at a

Christian day camp while someone was giving their

    testimony.

After the service someone showed me some verses,

but it would not have mattered what verse it was, Iknew I was bound for hell, God loved me, and the Lord

Jesus Christ was the only remedy for my lost condition.

Until about six years ago, I did not have much of a

desire to live for God. Slowly, through the blessing of

old-fashioned, Holy Ghost preaching, I started to gain a

desire for the Lord. Proverbs 3:6 was my theme verse

during that time, and sure enough, the Lord has shown

a way when there was no way.

The Lord then pricked me for about a year and

showed me that He wanted me to preach. Finally, onJuly 20th 2011, with my stubborn heart aside, Jeremiah

20:9 became a reality, and I surrendered to Gods call.

Currently, God has placed me at North Greenville Uni-

versity to study Elementary Education while attending

    Tabernacle Baptist College.

The aged woman: teachers of goodthings. (Titus 2)

Today there is a lot of talk about age. There is a lotof ageism: discrimination against the aged the

old people. We would do well to listen to the aged man

or woman. The aged woman is to teach good things. Many times the younger are not teachable; they justwant you to agree with them.

We read in Colossians 4:17 And say to Archippus,Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received inthe Lord, that thou fulfil it. We all have a ministry tofulfill. We are to be faithful to the church that we are amember of. You and I have a ministry that has beenentrusted to us. Like Archippus, we have received thisministry from the Lord. If you are a member of a localchurch, that is your ministry until the Lord calls youout. When our home church is having services that is

    where we should be.

We met a young American couple in South Africa. The young wife said something that I have not forgot-ten. In America they worked in the same Christianschool. The husband observed her for one year beforehe ever gave indication that he was interested in her. Ithink that is wise. He was reared in South Africa andknew God had called him to go back to South Africa asa missionary. It was important to get the right help-meet. It would be her ministry as well as his. One rea-son to be faithful: you never know who is watching. We know the Lord is watching.

In South Africa the young girls would wear theWWJD bracelets and the boys would wear the WWJDshoe string necklace. I liked to aggravate them andwould admire the bracelet or necklace. Then I wouldsay, Lets see what would JESUS do? Jesus would bein Sunday school. Jesus would be in the Morning andEvening worship. Jesus would be in Wednesday prayermeeting. Jesus would be in the Friday night youthmeeting. It is all about Him! Why wouldnt Jesus bethere? They would say, Oh, maam. They thought Ihad some loose screws. They were probably right.

Jesus left us an example that we should walk in His

steps. He gave you a pastor to perfect you. No otherPastor can give you what God has given your Pastor foryou!

When we first went to South Africa, the norm for

most churches was to have Sunday school at the sametime as preaching. White people would not come toSunday school because it was for children. The chil-dren didnt stay for preaching. We made our sign toread: Childrens Sunday school and ADULT Biblestudy at 10:00 and morning worship at 11AM. Chil-

dren would leave after Sunday school. They would goaround one corner of the building and I would goaround the other end of the building. They would giveme all kinds of excuses, but eventually stayed for

preaching. Visitors would comment on so many chil-dren being in preaching. Many of the children gotsaved.

We had Sunday school even if there was only onechild. I read this quote in the Sword of the Lord severalyears ago. One afternoon, said Mr. D. L. Moody, Inoticed a young lady at the services whom I knew to be

Saved From What?By Dr. Harold Sightler (19141995)

And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shaltcall his name JESUS: for he shall save his people fromtheir sins.Matt. 1:21.I

n the first chapter of Matthew, we have the clearestdeclaration concerning the manner of the birth of

Jesus found in the Bible. The inspired record sets forthin no uncertain terms the virgin birth, and this truth isrepeated several times. Joseph had to be convinced, forhis first impression was that Mary had committed forni-cation. He was minded to put her away privately, not

being willing to make a public example of her. This is

what Joseph was proceeding to do when he was arrest-ed by the angel of the Lord with this statement concern-ing the true facts of what had happened.

After the angel had instructed Joseph as to the man-ner of Marys conception, he then announced the great

purpose of this miracle. In our text, the angel sums upthe entire purpose of the coming of Jesus into theworld: Thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shallsave his people from their sins. This is one of the greatstatements of the Bible. It is a truth that has been prov-en over and over again. Its wonderful message is thesweetest ever heard by mortal ear. The power of thistruth has transformed the lives of multitudes.

The great motivating power that sends us out topreach is the message that Jesus saves. This is the samemotivating power which fills the ranks of missionaries.

No sacrifice is too great and no price is too high for thismessage. It drives us on with new hope upon each op-

portunity to witness or preach. We have experienced itslife-transforming power, and we have seen it work inthe lives of others.

    I. Things From Which None Are Saved

    Though Jesus savesblessed truthnotice three

things from which none of us are saved today.

    1. None Saved From Suffering

    2. First, I am saved, but I am not saved from suffer-ing. Go to the hospitals today, and you will find asmany Christians there as lost people. Go to the resthomes, and you will find as many feeble and weakChristians as non-Christians. Yes, sometime or otherevery last one of us will suffer. We may be well today,

but some tomorrow will bring us to the hospital in painand agony. This life is marked by suffering. Sin is pro-ducing its fruit. Ours is a fallen race, and a mark of this

    Fall is suffering.

Well do I know that Jesus has power to heal our

bodies. He is the Great Physician. No disease is toogreat for this Healer. Every time we recover from anillness, it is because He is the Healer. We ought to prayfor the healing of our bodies and for the healing of ourloved ones. Yet, there will come a time when it is notGods will to heal. When the day comes we shall die.All suffer in this life. We enter the world with a cry,and we leave the world with the same. The journey ismarked by times of suffering and sickness.

May I rejoice with you over the day when therewill be no more pain. The time will come when all willreceive a new body. This body is to be fashioned like

unto the glorious body of our Lord. Then there will beno more suffering and sickness. In I John 3:2, we read,Belovedit doth not yet appear what we shall be: butwe know that, when he shall appear, we shall be likehim; for we shall see him as he is. When that daycomes, there will be no more pain, suffering or sick-ness.

    2. None Saved From Sorrow

Second, I am not saved from sorrow. Tears are theportion and lot of us all here upon this earth. For manyyears, I could say that I had never had a broken heart. Ihad never sorrowed. All in my family were well and

strong. I had never lost a loved one by death. I had nev-er trod the valley of sorrow. I had never shed bittertears. However, never again can I say this. In 1951, Iwas plunged into a valley of tears and sorrow unparal-leled in all my past. My family circle was forever bro-ken in the tragic passing of my child. She was killed inan automobile accident. My wife was very seriouslyinjured. For five months she lingered near death. Shewill carry the marks of this accident to her grave. Myheart was broken. Tears came freely then, and oftensince. I was saved then as much as ever, but I was notsaved from sorrow.

Sometime in the lives of us all sorrow will come. This sorrow will make us long for the day when Jesuswill wipe away all tears from our eyes. He has given tous this promise: Weeping may endure for a night, but

joy cometh in the morning (Ps. 30:5). The time willcome when no saved person will ever weep, when ourhearts will never bleed again.

    3. None Saved From Shame

Third, I am not saved from shame. All will agree

been saved from sinsaved from the power of sin. Grace has broken the power of sin. Where sin abounded, grace didmuch more abound (Rom. 5:20). Jesus gives His people power to say no to the Devil and sin. He liberates from the

bondage and pits of sin. He lifts us out.

We are also saved from the penalty of sin. The Bible says, The soul that sinneth, it shall die, and, the wages of

sin is death. It is true that the penalty of sin is death, but to us who are saved, this penalty is paid by our Lord JesusChrist. In Romans 8:1 we read, There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus. We arepassed from condemnation to eternal life.

Then one day we will be saved from the presence of sin. The redeemed are to be lifted from the earth and from itssin. The day will come when we will be taken to a place where there is no sin. Jesus promises that there shall in no wiseenter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination (Rev. 21:27). Neither the Devil nor hisdemons will be able to enter into that City. It is prepared for the redeemed.

    2. I Am Saved From Self

    (Continued on page 6)

that there is a shame in the old ruggedcross. The world has never been friendly tograce. They that live godly will suffer per-secution. This world does not understandthe saved. The saved can never becomeadjusted to this age. The Bible warns thatthis world will be despisers of those thatare good (II Tim. 3:3).

One needs only to take his Bible inhand and walk down a busy street to seethe eyes of others lifted in scorn. There isshame in the Book. There is shame in atestimony. There is shame in a witness. They that stand for God understand thisshame and gladly bear it.

Some golden daybreak those who nowsuffer shame will be placed on exhibitionin Glory. The angels and all the heavenlycreatures will be permitted to look upon thetokens of Gods grace. The redeemed of allages will be gathered together into this

place of exhibition. No shame then; onlyglory by and by.

II. Things From Which We Are Saved

I have noticed three things from whichwe are not saved; now I want us to noticethree things from which Jesus does save us.

    1. I Am Saved From Sin

The text says, He shall save his peoplefrom their sins. Someone has accused usof believing in a sinning religion.Though we do not claim sinless perfection,we do rejoice that, by His grace, we have

Next, let us consider the difference between theirpower: human effort verses the spirit. Paul continuesin verse 3 by asking, Are ye so foolish? Having begunin the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?

What is the goal? Salvation, of course. But I think notjust in the futuristic, fire-insurance sense, but also inthe sense of seeing our lives transformed here and now.Gods plan is to restore us from our fallen state not

just later in heaven, but beginning in the present. Thequestion is how can such a feat be accomplished?

There are two paths we can attempt: Trying by hu-man effort or trusting in the power of the Spirit. The

point is that the job is too great to be done by us thats why Christ died to pay the price for our sin; butnot only that, He won the victory over sin and by HisSpirit empowers us as we yield to Him to reach that

    goal.

    The songwriter put it this way:Its not in trying, but in trusting;Its not in running, but in resting;

Not in wondering, but in prayingThat we find the strength of the Lord.

Tabernacle Baptist College was founded in 1963 by

Dr. Harold B. Sightler for the purpose of preparing

men and women for full-time service for the Lord.

In the years of Tabernacles existence, we have

seen our graduates engaged in the ministry on mis-

sion fields, in the pastorate, in evangelism, in

Christian schools, and as Christian laymen.

Students receive quality and practical Christian

training in a variety of areas, all centered around an

    old-fashioned, Independent, Fundamental, Bible

    believing, local Baptist Church.

Stdy to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth

not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of tth.

    2 Timothy 2:15

I am not my own; I am bought with a price. After Jesus saved me, He demandedmy body, soul and spirit. All I am and all I have are His; I must be about His business.I must go where He wills that I go and say that which He wills me to say. To use thewords of Paul, I am a bond servant of Jesuswe are His slaves. All saved people areable to give this same testimony.

Sometimes unsaved people are heard to say that they will do as they please. Godspeople must not say this. We gladly pledge our allegiance to Jesus. We gladly do as Hepleases. Herein lies the reason men and women will give their lives on the missionfield. Here is the answer to the great sacrifice some people make in order to serve Je-sus: we are saved from self.

    3. I Am Saved From Satan

This makes the Devil mad. He does not want me to proclaim deliverance from hispower. Blessed be the day when Jesus saved me from Satan. I am free indeed. TheDevil cannot do more than nag me. He cannot put his dirty hands upon me except inGods will. He cannot get to me except God permit him to do so. The Bible describesSatan as a roaring lion going up and down in the earth seeking whom he may devour. Irejoice that there are some whom he cannot devourthe redeemed. To the saved he is

more a roar than anything else.

Claim the deliverance and rejoice in it. The Devil can do no more than try to hinderyou from so doing. Claim freedom by faith. When Jesus saved you, He saved you fromSatan.

Many times the Devil has threatened my life. In nearly audible impressions he tellsus that he will take our lives. But he is a liar; my life is in Jesus, and the Devil can donothing about it.
