State wise activities of NETFISH in July 2009
A total of 288 training programmes were conducted throughout the
maritime states of India during July 2009. Table1 shows the number of
programmes conducted in each region during July 2009 and the summation of
activities carried out so far in this year. The state wise details of the
programmes are as follows.
Kerala
Along the Kerala coast 62 training programmes were organised which
included 15 pre-processing training programmes, 9 landing centre training
programmes, 2 programmes on conservation and sustainable fishing, 26
fishermen training programmes and 10 street plays. The street plays were
conducted at Puthiyappa & Beypore and a good response was received from
the fisher-folks.
Harbours at Munambam, Puthiyappa and Beypore were visited and the
status of upgradation work was monitored. The work for the installation of chill
room and tube ice machine has progressed at Munambam and Beypore
harbours. The project report for the upgradation of Puthiyappa harbour has
been submitted by the HED to NFDB. A meeting was held with the AD
Fisheries, Beypore to gain a good cooperation from their side in giving
sufficient infrastructure for the better handling of fishes in the harbour.
A meeting was organized with the representatives of different
stakeholder’s associations of Sakthikulangara Fisheries Harbour, in the
presence of Assistant Director and Technical officers of SRO, Kollam and
Assistant Engineer of Neendakara Fisheries Harbour. Lack of proper facilities
for the hygienic handling of fishes in the Sakthikulangara harbour and the
need of up-gradation of the harbour were discussed during the meeting and it
was decided to form a management society. A discussion was held with Shri.
Ajayan, Deputy Director of Fisheries, Alappuzha regarding the formulation of
a co-management society in Purakkad, where mini trawling is depleting
inshore water resources.

Karnataka
In Karnataka 27 extension training programmes were arranged, which
consisted of 10 Sustainable fishing/conservation programmes, 5 landing
centre programmes and 7 dry fish awareness programmes at Padubidri,
Bhatkal, Honnavara, Ankola and Karwar areas, 2 street plays near Harwada
beach in North Canara, one beach cleaning programme/ rally, one Free
Medical Camp and one mass communication programme.
Free medical check up and medicines were provided during the
medical camp organised on behalf of Snehakunja Trust and NETFISH, at
Fisher community hamlet, Dhareshwar. The Street plays in Yakshagana style
highlighted the impact of pollution, indiscriminate use of plastics and small
meshed nets on fisheries and the importance of conservation of fishery
resources. More than 100 fisherfolks attended the workshop on fisheries
resource conservation held in Harwada, jointly conducted by SCODWES and
NETFISH. The Beach Cleaning program organized at Ankola helped to create
awareness among the fishermen community and people of Dubinshashi about
sea water & beach pollution. More than 50 fisher women actively participated
in the cleanup programme by collecting and disposing all waste nets, bottles
and unwanted materials on the beach.
Maharashtra and Goa
Altogether 28 extension training programmes were conducted and it
comprised of 25 programs on conservation and sustainability aspects at
landing centres and one street play in Maharashtra and 2 conservation and
sustainability programmes at landing centres in Goa. Ice plants in Ratnagiri
were visited to study the prevailing conditions in the plants. The concept of co-
management was discussed with fisherfolk during the training programmes.
The fisherfolk expressed their interest in implementing co-management
strategies for the sustainability of fisheries in their area. Registration of
Rampan Sangha was done in Tarkarli, Tal.-Malvan, Dist. Sindhudurg.

Gujarat
Seven awareness programmes on conservation and sustainable
fisheries were conducted at Vanakbara, Ghoghla, Navi Bandar, Harshad,
Navdra and Sutrapada landing centres in Gujarat. Heavy rain and flood during
the month hindered NETFISH in conducting all the scheduled programmes in
the state.
Various issues at Veraval landing centre were discussed with
Mr.V.K.Sukala, Superintendent of Fisheries at his office. The need of good
quality ice and the subsidy schemes for the implementation and up gradation
of ice plants were introduced to Ice plant owners at Veraval and Porbandar. A
meeting was arranged with the Deputy Director of Fisheries at his office to
discuss about the installation of chill room and tube ice machines at Veraval,
Porbandar and Jakhau harbours. The fisheries department showed their
willingness to install chill room and tube ice machine at Mangrol Fishing
Harbour, where up gradation process is already in progress under the
suggestion of FAO. The fund of PMNRF to fishermen freed from Pakistan was
released at DIU. The first meeting of Vanakbara Fishing Harbour
Management Committee was held, during which discussions were made on
formation of bylaws and it’s registration with registrar with the permission of
Collector of DIU.
West Bengal
NETFISH conducted 42 extension training programmes during the
month in 24 Parganas South and Medinipur East districts of West Bengal.
NETFISH in association with Sarboday Sangha organized 18 extension
programmes and conducted 2 door to door survey programmes in Kultikri &
Gramraj-Sakhapada. In addition, 4 School programmes were organized on
fish quality, conservation & sustainable fishing at Kultikri Prahlad Vidyapith
(HS); Dubda Deshpran Vidyabhaban; Kasaria HS and Khejuri Adarsha
Vidyapith (H S) in Medinipur East. 12 street plays in three days were also
performed by Contai Pratikee at different fisheries pockets in East Midinipur
district.
In association with SAB (The Science Association of Bengal),
NETFISH organized 1 awareness programme on fish quality management

and handling of fishes in the Birendra fish market, Kakdwip and 9 fishermen
programmes on Fish quality management at various landing centres in South
24 Parganas.
NETFISH along with Digha Fishermen and Fish Traders Association
(DFFTA) organized one fishermen training programme at Digha mohana for
boat owners regarding improvement of fish quality and handling of catch
onboard and in landing centre and one programme on conservation and
sustainable fishing.
In addition three training programmes on hygiene and sanitation
practices to pre-processing workers were organised at M/s. Star Sea Foods
Pvt. Ltd., in Shankarpur and M/s. Meridian Fisheries Pre-processing Centre
and M/s. New Eastern Marine Products in North 24 Parganas. Two training
programmes for boat owners at Shankarpur Fishing Harbour and Digha
Mohana Landing Centre were also conducted, during which Shri Raju K.
Joseph, Asst. Director, MPEDA, RO, Kolkata gave a brief description of
MPEDA schemes for the development of marine fishery sector.
Instead of stipend, T-shirts and caps were distributed to the
participants of training programmes. NETFISH & MPEDA logo and a slogan
“Use sufficient ice after catch and Use insulated fish box, reduce ice
consumption and improve quality of catch” were printed on T-shirt for the
campaigning of NETFISH and its objectives.
Orissa
Along Orissa coasts 19 Extension Training programmes were
conducted by NETFISH in association with active members from CPDA,
PRIDA, NF & RPRDS, SRMSS and PENCODE. This comprised of 13
fishermen training programmes, 1 landing centre training programme, 1 dry
fish training programme, 2 onboard training programmes and 2 street plays.
A discussion was made with Mr G. Mohan Kumar, Principal Secretary,
State Fisheries regarding NETFISH activities in Orissa and the need of up
gradation of ice plant in Dhamara area through MPEDA subsidy schemes.

Andhra Pradesh
23 Extension Programmes were conducted by NETFISH through
member NGO’s in Andhra Pradesh during the month.
210 Fishermen were trained by 4 Conservation and Sustainable
training programmes conducted in the regions of Vizag, Kakinada, Bapatla,
Odarev and Uppada fish landing center. They were made aware of
importance of trawl ban, use of selective fishing methods, role of mangroves
etc in conserving biodiversity. Fishermen of Uppada are now more interested
in practicing hook and line fishing and fishermen of Vizag and Kakinada are
using proper mesh sized nets. Also they are very much aware of significance
of ban period and are going for alternative livelihood during ban period.
390 fishermen were trained by conducting 13 Fishermen training
programmes in the regions of Kakinada, Uppada fish landing center,
Pudimadaka fish landing center, Odarev fish landing center, Visakhapatnam
fishing harbour and fish landing centers. Importance of Personal Hygiene,
cleaning and maintenance of boat, cold chain operations were explained to
them. Some of the boat owners from Uppada showed interest to register their
boats with MPEDA for availing subsidies. In Kakinada fishing harbour, a
committee was formed and handed over 24 auction booths to stakeholders on
rental basis for its use and maintenance. Fishermen of Nizampatnam fishing
harbour are transporting ice in crates. Fishermen of Odarev fish landing
center is showing interest in forming a co-management society among boat
owners.
60 pre-processing workers were trained by conducting 2 Pre-
processing training programmes in the areas of Kakinada Fishing harbour.
NETFISH supplied hand gloves and plastic sheets to promote hygienic
practices.
90 Fisher woman and dry fish vendors were trained by conducting 3
Dry fish awareness training programme in Fisheries Dept, Fishing harbour
Kakinada. NETFISH supplied plastic sheets to the participants in view to
avoid direct contaminations. Dry fish workers are now using cement platforms
and plastic sheets to dry the products.

Tamil Nadu
Altogether 80 extension training programmes were organised in Tamil
Nadu by NETFISH in association with member NGO’s. Of this 40 were along
southern part and 40 were along northern part of the state. The programmes
included 27 landing centre training programmes, 20 conservation and quality
management awareness programmes, 32 street plays and one medical camp.
Mass awareness programmes were conducted for fisherfolk at
Karaikal-medu and Karaikal-pondy on the need of planting mangrove,
application of FADs, sea ranching, taking care of turtle reproduction, brooded
crab’s ranching, tuna long lining, use of 35 mm mesh size, use of square
mesh, fleet reduction, stop using plastic during voyages etc. Huge amount of
tuna landing is taking place at Karaikal-medu and the fishermen are least
aware of its value and handling methods. District Collector of Karaikal and
Director of Fisheries, Pondicherry were pleased with NETFISH activities and
recommended to conduct more programmes on tuna awareness, onboard
handling and awareness of subsidy schemes for tuna long line conversion in
the region. Tuna Tool Kits were also distributed at Nagapattinam region.
A series of fishermen training programmes were conducted in
association with the member NGO’s along 26 coastal villages in Tuticorin,
Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur and Kanyakumari districts. The NETFISH
documentaries on Hygienic handling of fishes onboard and in harbour were
also shown to the participants. Street play was performed by ‘Nanjil Natham’
in front of a large gathering of students and fisherfolk in Enayam fishing
village. A Medical camp was conducted at M.G.R. Nagar in Ramanathapuram
district with the assistance of MSSRF, Thangachimadam. 98 fisherfolks were
diagnosed and supplied with medicines during the camp.
In a workshop at M.S.S.R.F, Chennai the goals and activities of
NETFISH were explained to the participants by the State co-ordinator. Prof.
M.S.Swaminathan appreciated NETFISH and its activities. An audio
conferencing programme was organized by M.S.S.R.F. at M.P.E.D.A.
Regional Office, Chennai in which the SCO had a conversation with
Nagapatinam boat owner through audio equipments regarding quality,
quantity and basic rate factors. SCO, Tuticorin attended the seminar
“Fisheries and Livelihood based on Sea” conducted by M.S.S.R.F,

Chidambaramn and “Strategic Partners Meeting” conducted by M.S.S.R.F.,
Thangachimadam. A visit to model mangrove farm at Pulianthurai maintained
by MSSRF,Chidambaram and Pazhayar Fishing Harbour were also made.
The conference on “The State level dialogue on impact of the National
Foreign Trade Policy on the marine sector of Tamil Nadu” conducted by
citizen consumer and civic action group, Chennai was attended by both the
SCO’s of Tamilnadu, in which the SCO, Tuticorin gave a lecture on the
NETFISH Training programmes and its impact on fisherfolks.
