report for preseason camp and open the 2004 sea-son at home with Middle Tennessee, Macdonald was named just the third head coach in the history of the MSU soccer program. The transition stage would be short-lived, but Macdonald was more than prepared to take on the task full circle.

Macdonald became the most successful rookie coach in MSU history, help-ing the Maroon and White to its most wins since 2001 while securing a record-tying five league victories en route to State’s second SEC Tournament berth.

Having posted winning seasons in all but four sea-sons of his collegiate coach-ing career, Macdonald knew that building a competitive program would be an endur-ing process.

That endurance has starting paying results, as the 2009 Bulldog edition claimed the pro-gram's first winning season since 2003.

His 2009 Bulldog unit matched his inaugural team for the most wins under

his guidance after open-ing the season with eight-straight victories, the most in program annals. It was also the first time that an MState contingent has gone perfect in the non-conference slate. In addi-tion to those accomplish-ments, the 2009 team put together a school-record four consecutive shutouts and posted ties against top-10 ranked Florida and South Carolina.

Last season's success continues the foundation

that has been laid by Macdonald since taking over the program in 2004.

Macdonald's run to the head posi-tion in Starkville came just a year after he accepted his first Division I coaching job as a volunteer assistant with the Bulldogs in 2003, where he was reunited with longtime friend Neil McGuire, who, three years earlier, had attained his first tenure as a Division I head coach at the Northeast Mississippi school.

Working primarily on the defensive unit during his initial spring season in Starkville, Macdonald was instrumental in helping to progressively enhance an already experienced defensive club. Prior to the Fall season in 2003, Macdonald was elevated to assis-tant coach where his primary duties included assuming day-to-day coach-ing duties with the defense, as well as recruiting. With his experience as a

Simply stated, and loosely defined, a coach is a person who teaches and directs another person via encour-

agement and advice. However, as in all of his everyday activities, coaching has become a form of commitment for eighth-year Mississippi State Head Coach Neil Macdonald.

With success having followed him every step of the way from his humble beginnings in the soccer world, to his time in Starkville, Macdonald knows no one can get any-where in life without focus and hard work.

Just weeks before the Bulldogs would

"Games are won in the noise and excitement of the playing field, but championships are won quietly and without applause on the 'training ground.' That, for me, sums up my philosophy on the

game. Success is determined completely by what the culture of training is and how committed people are to the cause."

COACHING STAFF COACHING STAFFCOACHING STAFFcoach, the Bulldogs turned in a school-record goals against average and yielded just 0.86 goals per game en route to a 9-8-3 record — one that included a pair of victories over nationally-ranked squads, includ-ing No. 6 Florida. The victories were the first for an MSU team over a top 25 squad in school history.

Macdonald's tenure as a full-time assistant was short-lived, how-ever, as he received the opportunity of a lifetime when longtime friend McGuire departed Starkville to become an assistant coach at Texas. On July 29, 2004, just days before he would welcome a squad of 21 players back to campus, he was named Mississippi State's third head coach.

"Coaching has always been something that has just fell into my lap," Macdonald said. "People have always told me that I would have a future in it. I have just been very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. I've always had very good opportunities presented to me."

Macdonald's appointment to the head of the Mississippi State soc-cer program continues a passion for the sport that spans back to his days as a youngster growing up in Scotland.

Like all Scottish youngsters around his age growing up, Macdonald often found himself in the streets of his Inverness neighborhood refin-ing his soccer skills on the blacktop, rather than on the grass of a freshly mowed pitch. To him, as well as his friends, it was perceived as normalcy to set up makeshift goals out of trash cans and jackets just to play the game they developed a strong love for early on in life.

There was always time for soccer, whether it be 15 minutes at break time or even an hour before school started, and finding foes and teammates was never a challenge. The challenge lied in finding enough daylight to play an entire game.

As Macdonald foraged his way through primary and secondary school, his skills could not do anything but develop. It did not take long before he was dominating his chums on the field, often times catch-ing the eyes of professional scouts looking for young talent, or from coaches abroad looking to find talent for their collegiate programs in the United States.

At the still tender age of 18, Macdonald attended a coaching school in nearby Edinburgh where he would find himself playing on the other side of the ball from future college teammates and longtime friends McGuire and Kevin Moreland. Following his experience there, it was then that Macdonald got the call that would, inevitably, change his life.

In 1996, with his parents' blessing and his friends helping him to adjust, Macdonald made the transition to the United States, making a name for himself as a standout athlete at Augusta State University in southern Georgia. Having turned heads with both his tactical and technical skills from those who attended practices, Macdonald also impressed his coaches as well in his first preseason.

Macdonald saw action in every game of his rookie campaign and would go on to play a number of different positions at Augusta State, but he typically made most of his playing appearances in the center midfield role.

A four-year starter for the Jaguars, Macdonald captained the team during his junior and senior seasons and was also a recipient of a handful of team awards, as well as one conference player of the week accolade. He played and started in every game he was eligible for during his illustrious career in Augusta, and he left the distinguished academic institution as the career record holder in games played and games started.

Following his graduation from Augusta State in 1997, Macdonald had set his sights on graduate school at the university with the full intention of becoming a future history teacher. However, with McGuire in need of an assistant coach at his new job at Iowa Central Community College, Macdonald, once again, got a phone call that would set his path in a new direction. It was the years following he would find himself in the coaching world, trading the classroom for the soccer field.

During the duo's initial campaign in Fort Dodge, Iowa, as coaches

of both the men's and women's teams, the ICCC women finished the season as regional champions with a 9-3-1 clip and featured the nation's leading scorer at that level. The men's team won the regional championship as well en route to concluding the season with a 15-4-1 record and a No. 14 national ranking.

Following a 1998 campaign that saw both the Tritons and Lady Tritons march to regional and national rankings, McGuire would depart the campus of ICCC for an assistant coaching job at Iowa State, thereby handing over his position as head coach to Macdonald, who took the reigns of the program at full speed.

Over the course of the next five seasons, he would skipper the men's team to five regional championships, four times reach-ing the Sweet 16 of the National Junior College Association of America (NJCAA) national tournament, including his final season in 2002 when the squad advanced through to the Final Four.

His accomplishments and rigor as a coach and mentor were equally noted on the women's side as well, where he led the Lady Tritons to five consecutive regional championships, including an appearance in the Elite Eight in 2002.

During his five-year tenure in Fort Dodge, Macdonald col-lected an impressive 149-34-5 coaching record. At the conclusion of the 2002 campaigns, he was honored with NJCAA Region Coach of the Year accolades, along with being named one of three finalists for NSCAA National Coach of the Year honors. He was also lauded with Who's Who of America's Teachers as well.

With the background of assistant and head coaching jobs at Iowa Central, along with a professional coaching stint with the W-League's Memphis Mercury,

Macdonald will begin his 14th season as a collegiate coach

this year, having been successful at each step of his progression up the ladder rungs of the coaching world. Over the years, he has developed his coaching philosophies and tailored it to his work ethic and responsibilities.

Attitude and determination to succeed should always be num-ber one when it comes to playing the game.

Commitment to the cause has been something that has trans-lated into his recruiting philosophy as well.

“I look for character first of all,” said Macdonald of the three things he looks for in a prospective student-athlete. “Because we are in the Southeastern Conference, you have to look at athleti-cism and pace as an incredibly important factor. Ideally, you'd like to have a technically sound player that has a good grasp of what the fundamentals of the game are. That makes things a lot easier.”

Over the years, Macdonald has seen his share of life-chang-ing experiences, but nothing comes close to what he experienced before the his tenure as MState’s head coach even began. Having met his wife Jamie, an assistant professor in the Graphic Design program at Mississippi State, when both were athletes at Augusta State, the couple celebrated the birth of their first child, Colin Ross, in May, 2004, and welcomed their second son, Liam Alexander in March, 2008.

Born May 16, 1972, in Banff, Scotland, Macdonald currently holds his coaching license from the Scottish Football Association. This past summer, Macdonald returned to his home country and completed his Scottish FA UEFA "B" license, one of the top coaching decorations in international soccer.

He is also in charge of scouting, purchasing and compli-ance. "Andy brings an awful lot to the table for us," Macdonald said. "He is a very intelligent person and he knows the game of soccer inside-out. He is a very good on-field coach and I don't know if I have ever worked with anyone better than he is. He is the type of guy that will demand greatness from his players everyday." Manners came to Starkville following a very successful coaching career in Fort Dodge, Iowa, where he was charged with

the head coaching duties of both the Triton and Lady Triton soccer teams. As head coach of the nationally-ranked ICCC pro-grams for two seasons, Manners collected a 33-6-3 record as head coach of the men's team and a 26-9-3 clip as skipper of the Lady Tritons. Having secured the Region XI cham-pionship for the second-straight season under Manners' guidance, the ICCC men concluded the 2004 campaign with a 15-4-3 record that was stopped short on a heart-breaking overtime loss to South Suburban CC in the district tournament. The Lady Tritons finished their season with a standout 13-5-1 mark, but were stopped just shy of their seventh consecutive Region XI cham-pionship with a loss to Iowa Western in the region finals. While in Fort Dodge, Manners mentored three females and one male to NJCAA all-America accolades, while his tutelage also led to eight all-region accolades (five women) for his athletes. Prior to his appointment as ICCC head coach, Manners served two stints (1999, 2001-02) as an assistant in Fort Dodge under Macdonald where the duo led both squads to a pair of NJCAA national tourna-ment berths. "Neil and I worked alongside one anoth-er for three years in Iowa, and I am excited to be coaching with him again" Manners said. "He is an excellent coach and leader who I have learned a lot from, especially at the Division I level." Manners played in 80 games (79 starts)

during his career at George Mason (1994-97) and scored 35 points on 12 goals and 11 assists from his central defender position. While in Fairfax, Va., he helped lead the Patriots to a combined 44-32-10 record, including a trip to the 1996 NCAA Tournament. A first team all-Colonial Athletic Association selection and second team all-Virginia honoree as a junior, Manners was also a three-time recipient of CAA Scholar-Athlete laurels as well. Manners has also played soccer in England for both Watford F.C. and Sunderland A.F.C. Manners earned his Bachelor of Science degree in health, fitness and rec-reation resources from George Mason in 1999 before taking a break from coach-ing in 2000 to earn his Master's degree in education from Augusta State in 2002. He is currently pursuing his doctorate from Mississippi State. A native of Sunderland, England, Manners holds his 'B' coaching license from the United States Soccer Federation, an English 'C' coaching certificate and a NSCAA level 2 goalkeeping diploma. He has also served as a staff coach for the Olympic Development Programs in both Alabama and Mississippi. He is currently the lead instructor for Mississippi Soccer Association's Northern District. Mississippi State head coach Neil Macdonald was need-ing someone to work with

the Bulldog goalkeepers, and he found a playing and coaching veteran right on campus in Robbie Kröger.

Kröger, a native of Johannesburg, South Africa, begins his second sea-son working with State's goalies on a daily basis while also assisting with some of the program's summer camps.

Kröger presents the MSU keepers with a veteran soccer background that includes over 20 years of playing experience.

"We are excited to have Robbie on staff. He has tre-mendous experience as a player and coach, and that has proven valuable during his work with our goalkeep-ers," MSU head coach Neil Macdonald said. "He works with our keepers on a daily basis, and we are excited to see the amount of energy he brings to our team. We needed a specialist to work with our goalkeepers, and Robbie gives us that. He is a tremendous asset in help-ing with the development of our goalkeepers. When we were looking for someone to work with them, it was great that we found some-one with Robbie's experi-ence right here on campus."

During his playing career, Kröger played on several provincial teams.

His first taste of elite soccer action came as a member of the U12 and U14 Eastern Transvaal Provincial teams. A couple of years later he earned a place on the Southern Regional Schools U16 squad in his native Johannesburg.

During 1995 and 1996 he enjoyed a stint playing for VFL Michelstadt in the Hessen Regional Liga, Germany.

In 1996, Kröger also had the oppor-tunity to play for Balfour Park in Johannesburg's U19 Premier Soccer League. Kröger earned Goalkeeper of the Club honors as he helped Balfour Park claim the Preseason Cup, Premier League title and the Premier Cup.

His play for Balfour Park helped earn him a professional trial with Wits University, a team in South Africa's Premier Soccer League.

Kröger's passion for goalkeeping stayed with him during his transition to the United States. Upon his arrival in Starkville, he had the opportu-nity to train the goalkeepers for both Starkville Academy and Starkville High School. Kröger also provides private goalkeeper training for aspir-

ing net-minders in the area.Kröger takes pride in develop-

ing quality goalkeepers because he believes that they "hold the heart of the team on their sleeve, and that good training, awareness and athletic skills translate to team confidence and positive playing mentality on the pitch."

When not on the soccer field instructing State's goalkeepers, Kröger is instructing students in the classroom as an Assistant Professor in Mississippi State's Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture.

Kröger, born July 28, 1978, in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, came to Starkville after earning a Ph.D in Biology from the University of Mississippi.

Prior to continuing his studies in the Magnolia State, Kröger attend-ed the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa, obtaining Bachelor of Science degrees in Botany and Environmental Conservation Biology and a Master of Science in River and Wetland Ecology.

Kröger is married to the former Lisa Blair Sloan of Memphis, Tenn.

NEIL MACDONALDNEIL MACDONALD2004-Present • 43-83-10 (.353)

Having spent 2002 as a volunteer assistant and 2003 as a full-time assistant on college teammate Neil McGuire’s coaching staff, Macdonald took over the reigns of the MSU soccer program in August, 2004 - days before his team would report for preseason practice. The results of his tutelage were quick as State turned in its most wins since 2001 and matched the school record for conference victories

with a 5-5-1 SEC clip. The most successful rookie coach in the history of the Bulldog soccer program, he also became the first MSU rookie coach to lead his team to the SEC Tournament - just the second SEC Tournament berth in school history.

Mark E. Keenum became the 19th president of Mississippi State University on January 5, 2009. An MSU alumnus, he returned to Starkville following a distinguished public service career.

Keenum earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in agri-cultural economics at Mississippi State and joined the faculty in 1984 as a marketing specialist with the MSU Cooperative Extension

Service. Two years later, he became a research associate with the Ag-ricultural and Forestry Experiment Station at MSU. He completed his doctorate in agricultural economics at Missis-sippi State in 1988. He then joined the faculty of that department as an assistant professor/economist.

In 1989, Dr. Kee-num was named to the Washington, D.C., staff of U.S. Senator Thad Cochran as leg-islative assistant for

Agriculture and Natural Resources. He worked on wide-ranging issues affecting U.S. agriculture, including the 1990, 1996, and 2002 Farm Bills. From 1996-2006, he served as Senator Co-chran's chief of staff. In that role, he was the chief adviser to the senator on political, legislative and appropriations issues. He managed all administrative and legislative functions of Sen. Cochran's Washington, D.C., offi ce and three Mississippi offi ces. He also had oversight of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agricul-ture, Nutrition, and Forestry and the Committee on Appropria-tions. He left Capitol Hill in 2008 to become Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the George W. Bush Ad-ministration. He held the post for two years, leading the Farm Service Agency, the Risk Management Agency and the Foreign Agricultural Service.

While at USDA, Dr. Keenum headed initiatives to combat world hunger and promote capacity-building in developing countries. For his work, he earned the Hunger's Hope Award for Distinguished Public Service from America's Second Harvest, the nation's leading hunger relief charity. At MSU, Dr. Keenum has continued the focus on this issue, creating an International In-stitute in 2011 to coordinate university involvement in academic and research activities on a global scale. The initiative comple-ments the university's broader service and outreach efforts in communities across Mississippi, the region and the nation.

Under Keenum's leadership, Mississippi State has strength-ened its role as the fl agship research university in the state. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in 2011 classifi ed MSU as a research university with "very high research activity," one of just 108 in the nation and the only such desig-nation in Mississippi.

Dr. Keenum is presiding over a period of record growth at MSU, with enrollment fi gures setting all-time highs. The totals also include record numbers of freshmen, who report the highest grade point averages in school history.

A $100 million fund raising campaign was launched in 2009 to secure the resources to provide scholarships for students and for MSU faculty support. Called StatePride, the effort had report-ed more than $65 million by Summer 2011 in gifts and pledges. The fi rst awards were distributed in Fall 2010. Dr. Keenum has also led efforts to expand funding for the MSU Promise Program, which provides scholarship assistance to students whose families have limited fi nancial means.

Dr. Keenum and his wife Rhonda have four children.

Using more than two decades of intercollegiate experience in communications, fundraising and marketing, Scott Stricklin has continued to build upon the momentum of the Mississippi State fan base over his fi rst year as the director of athletics.

From his fi rst day on the job as Mississippi State's Athletic Di-rector in May 2010, Stricklin, using the department's foundations of focusing on student-athletes, possessing great integrity and

aggressively promot-ing Mississippi State University, has over-seen a year in which the Bulldogs enjoyed both on and off the fi eld successes unpar-alleled in more than a decade.

The 2010 Bulldog football team com-piled nine victories including the second-consecutive Egg Bowl win and a rout over Michigan in the Gator Bowl. The men's ten-nis team claimed the Southeastern Confer-ence Western Divi-sion title and posted its highest-ever team grade point average

in the fall. Baseball advanced to the NCAA Super Regional and men's outdoor track and fi eld fi nished in the top 20 for the third-straight year.

Bulldog student-athletes again excelled in the NCAA's Aca-demic Progress Rate, with all 16 sports far exceeding the mini-mum standard and 15 of 16 squads improving upon their previ-ous year total.

Stricklin has overseen record fundraising for Bulldog Athlet-ics, which has produced new facilities such as the $11.7 million Mize Pavilion at Humphrey Coliseum, a new football practice and training complex as well as future expansion and upgrades to Davis Wade Stadium. The Bulldog Club has solicited gifts totaling more than $20 million for the football facility, including a record $12 million gift from the Seal Family Foundation.

The Bulldog Club has initiated the most ambitious fundrais-ing drive in the athletic department's history - an initiative called "Today, Tomorrow, Forever" - to generate funding for new con-struction and upgrades to existing facilities.

Supporters are responding at the turnstile as well. In 2010, Mississippi State fans packed Davis Wade Stadium for every game, buying all available season tickets for the fi rst time in school history. A record 384,995 Bulldog supporters turned out in 2010, and the school has created a waiting list that has topped 1,000 requests for season ticket purchases.

Stricklin certainly wasn't a stranger to the Bulldog family or college athletics when he took over the reins at State.

A 1992 graduate of Mississippi State, the Jackson, Miss., na-tive's resume is highlighted by 23 years of experience on the col-legiate level in various capacities at fi ve different universities. The last two years, he served as Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs at his alma mater, overseeing fundraising, foot-ball and men's basketball scheduling, managing MSU's all-sport agreement with Adidas, facility planning, and serving as the ad-ministrative sport liaison for men's basketball and softball.

It was those types of day-to-day tasks that prepared the per-sonable Stricklin to take over the top seat in the Mississippi State athletic department.

Yet it's a journey that started during his formidable days as a dedicated and tireless worker in the media relations department that's led to his highly-respected career coming full circle.

Prior to graduating, Stricklin's stint in the MSU media relations offi ce included three seasons (1990-92) as the media contact for the nationally-renown baseball program. Upon graduation, he was named assistant media relations director at his alma mater.

He continued his climb up the ladder of success when he was named Associate Media Relations Director at Auburn, where he served from 1993-98. In 1998, Stricklin left Auburn to become As-sistant Athletics Director at Tulane, where he served as the prima-ry media contact for the Green Wave's 1998 12-0 football team. Next came a four-year run in the Big 12 Conference at Baylor (1999-2003) as Assistant AD for Communications and Marketing.

In 2003, Stricklin returned to the Southeastern Conference at Kentucky and spent fi ve seasons as the Associate AD for Media Relations, where he oversaw the day-to-day publicity of the tra-dition-rich Wildcat basketball program. It was his last stop before returning to Mississippi State in the spring of 2008.

Stricklin, 41, is married to the former Anne Howell, the young-est daughter of Basketball Hall of Fame member Bailey Howell. The couple has two daughters, Abby and Sophie.
