VICTORIA FALLSZimbabwe

Until the 19th century, the Zambezi River’sgreat cascade was called Mosi-oa-Tunya, “the smoke that thunders,” by the region’sKololo tribe. “Discovered” on November 16,1855, by Dr. David Livingstone and renamed forEngland’s queen, Victoria Falls is the planet’slargest curtain of water — spanning more thana mile — as it crashes some 328 feet into theraging Batoka Gorge below. Twice the height ofNiagara Falls, mighty Victoria Falls casts a veilof spray that at times can be seen up to 50miles away.

Prisoner TO PresidentActivist. Freedom fighter. Prisoner. President. Nelson Mandela, who died in 2013 at the age of 95, was this and more to millions of peoplearound the world. Jailed for 27 years during South Africa’s apartheid era, Mandela emergedfrom imprisonment in 1990 as the governmentbegan dismantling the apartheid machine. Four years later, Mandela was elected the firstpresident of a new, democratic South Africa. The story of his incredible journey was introducedto a new generation of admirers in late 2013,when the man whom millions called “Tata,” father in his native Xhosa language, died.

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of othersthat will determine the significance of the life we lead.”

~ Nelson Mandela
