Corps of Discovery #1504

“What’s in a Name?”

President Thomas Jefferson commissioned the

Corps of Discovery in 1803 and called upon his personal

secretary, US Army Captain Merewether Lewis to serve as

commander. Lewis selected his close friend, Second

Lieutenant William Clark, as his partner in the proposed

expedition to explore and map the Louisiana Purchase,

establish trade and sovereignty over the natives, find a route

to the Pacific coast and to establish US claim to the

Northwest. The Corps of Discovery was initially made up of

33 male volunteers.

In late July 1804, two months after the expedition

began following the Missouri River the Corps of Discovery

camped for several days within the area of present day

Council Bluffs, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska. The five day

stop provided time for the repair of equipment, astronomical

observations for mapping purposes and to make contact

with Indian Chiefs.

The historic meeting, “First Council” between Lewis

and Clark and Western Indians, a small group from the Oto-

Missouri village, occurred on August 3, 1804 north of

Omaha. The Corps marched in full uniform, demonstrated

their weapons and distributed gifts to the chiefs. Days later,

Lewis talked with Little Thief, head Chief of the Oto,

requesting they stop raids on the Omaha tribe. In March

1805, Little Thief, joined a delegation of Oto and other tribes

to meet President Jefferson in Washington D.C.

Corps of Discovery #1504 is Nebraska’s first

couples’ chapter, whose charter members are primarily

men. Several of the wives are associate members.

Ruth McMaster began her 2 year term as State President on June 1, 2015. She is from Nebraska City and a member of the J. Sterling Morton #1021 chapter. Ruth’s contact information:

Address: 105 N 17th St.; Nebraska City, NE 68410 Phone: 402-874-9577 Email: [email protected]

State Day is held annually in April. Date and place for the 2017 State Day is April 8 at the St. John’s Fellowship Hall, Norfolk NE. North Fork Questers #902 will be hosting.

Nebraska Questers’ voluntary donations to a Preservation and Restoration Fund provide up to $5000 in Grants presented at State Day every odd numbered year opposite the International Preservation and Restoration (P&R) grants.

The Nebraska State Council, which includes Executive Officers, Chairmen, Chapter Presidents and Past State Presidents, meets during October and at State Day in April. Executive Board meetings are held in early June and February.

“Prairie Tales” is the newsletter of the Nebraska Questers and is published twice a year, Spring and Fall, and is a privilege of membership.

“As Questers, we have a goal, dedication, a purpose, and a passion to help preserve our buildings, our

papers, and our “things” for all of us as well as those in the future. So, look around and see what we, as

Questers, can do to preserve for the future…our past and present for all generations to come. We need all of you and your talents to preserve this organization for

the future. Thank you for what you have done and plan to do in the future!”

ABOUT OUR CHAPTER

Nebraska’s newest and first couples chapter, Corps of Discovery #1504, was chartered on June 2, 2014. There are 11 Charter members and 8 Associate members. The chapter was organized because several husbands of members of La Belle Vue #933 and Lady Crook #893 expressed interest in becoming Questers.

The Charter Members are Bob Jeffus, Ben Harvey, Bob Zielinski, Jim Caldwell, Friz Miller, Edson Bridges, Don Arrasmith, and Carl and Denise Seaman. During the chapter’s first year, Roger and Nancy Utman were welcomed as new members. During our second year we added Merle Puhrman (and wife Lue as associate member).

Corps of Discovery #1504 members are collectors, enjoy history and have a strong interest in preservation and restoration. Chapter member attendance at 2016 NE State Day at Omaha’s Field Club and International Convention in Des Moines, Iowa was outstanding.

INFORMATION FROM CHAPTER POLICIES:

- Chapter meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday during the months June - October and January - May, at a predetermined location and normally in the evening.

- If schools are closed due to weather, there will be no meeting.

- Active Members: Annual Chapter Dues of $35.00 shall be paid to the chapter treasurer by 1 April of each year (this amount includes chapter ($7), state ($7) and International ($21) dues.

- Associate Members: Annual Chapter Dues of $7 shall be paid to the chapter treasurer by 1 April of each year (the full $7 remains with the chapter).

- Each member couple shall hold a meeting in their home annually, or make arrangements to hold the meeting in another facility or at a different site. Member couple serves as Host and Program Planner.

7

- ASK the hosts-- if you may bring a guest at least three days in advance, NOT the day of the meeting. PLEASE be considerate.

- For Meetings That Involve Trips: Group rates are determined by head count and advance reservations are required. Members and Guests reserve by paying the entrance fee (or a per-person donation set by chapter officers) on a schedule as set by the Program Chairman. Any entrance fees or donations are non-refundable. To cancel your reservation, you must inform the Program Chairman (Vice President) in advance on a schedule established by the Program Chair. Admission fees are based on a per person basis. All additional costs (lunch, parking, etc.) are the responsibility of attendees.

- RSVP regrets by notifying the chapter president and meeting hosts if you cannot attend a meeting, three days in advance, if possible.

- As total membership approaches 25, the chapter shall discuss and vote on capping total membership.

- New prospective couples members must be recommended by an active member and attend at least two out of six consecutive meetings. The President will poll members for a simple majority affirmative vote. Upon approval, the President will extend an invitation to the Prospective Members to join the chapter, and the President will provide them with copies of the By-Laws and Policies.

Our 2016-2018 INT’L PRESIDENT is Lorraine Jeffus. She is a member of La Belle Vue #933 in Bellevue, NE; and an associate member of Corps of Discovery #1504.

“A fascinating hobby, the study of antiques gives the most pleasure to those who strive to learn all they can about where, when, why and how they were made. Through the discovery and knowledge of antiques, we may bring the past to life and profit by the experiences of previous generations.” Jessie Elizabeth Bardens - Questers Founder
