The Secretary General Dear participants of GeMUN 2020,

My name is Alberto Giovanni Repetti, I am eighteen

years old and I am currently attending my fifth and last

year at Liceo Linguistico Internazionale “Grazia Deledda”

in Genoa, where my studies are focused on languages

such as English, Russian and Spanish.

The beginning of my MUN career dates back to 2017

when I represented Brazil at GeMUN in the FAO

Committee. During the same year I took part in the

Saint Petersburg MUN where I represented Singapore,

while in November I served in the Barcelona MUN as a

delegate of Cuba. In addition, this year during February I

represented the delegation of UNHCR at THIMUN.

Throughout the years I have realized the importance of

MUN as a key part of my ethical and cultural journey.

Therefore, I decided to take on the responsibility of the Chairman, first as a Deputy Chair in the

SPECPOL committee at GeMUN 2018 and second as a Main Chair in ECOSOC at GeMUN 2019. In

November I will also be chairing in the Special committee of ROSMUN in Jerusalem.

Needless to say, I am deeply honoured to serve as Secretary General of the XVII edition of GeMUN

in our beautiful city from the 20th to the 22nd February 2020.

Genoa Model of United Nations is the opportunity for every student to really understand the world

that surrounds us, analyse and try to solve the issues of our society. Moreover, this conference

really enhances the importance and the power of international cooperation and diplomacy as the

key to peacekeeping.

As a member of “the future generation” I am extremely worried about the alarming situation that

we are facing. More and more, the problems the world population is suffering have made people

more selfish. Citizens from different countries are blaming others for their own problems. Similarly,

cooperation among countries is being substituted by walls, both physical and psychological, such as

nationalism and prejudices. As a result, countries are rejecting people in need, as inalienable rights

are no longer respected or considered a priority, even in the countries that used to be leaders in

acceptance and inclusion. We have to take action immediately in order to create a better world not

only for our offspring, but for every single person living on this planet!

18

For this reason, I am really happy to announce GeMUN 2020’s theme: “Beyond Borders: towards

2030”.

There is often a general misconception of the meaning of border. Not only does this word refer to

borders such as a natural or artificial line that separates two countries, but also to ways of thinking

that impede people’s freedom and unalienable rights. By saying borders, we are also referring to all

the types of boundaries that do not allow our society to develop.

2030 is an extremely important deadline for our global world. The 17 sustainable goals are

something unachievable by a country on its own. Therefore, cooperation is the only way we can

solve the worldwide problems that are making people struggle every day. Every country, big or

small, may need help today or in the future to fully and sustainably develop until every citizen could

have access to food, water, education, healthcare. Every single basic right must be guaranteed.

Furthermore, I am convinced that GeMUN is the result of a cooperative work based on

multicultural and inclusive dialogue in which everybody does have the chance to do or say

something! Nobody is more important than anyone! Therefore, as a Secretary General I am

creating a healthy and collaborative environment where ideas and opinions of all members of the

GeMUN family are respected and fully taken into consideration. I will put every effort to make

every single delegate feel at ease during the conference.

“We all do better when we work together. Our differences do matter, but our common humanity

matters more. “

(William J. Clinton)

Due to the fact that I am really keen on the conference’s theme I am genuinely looking forward to

seeing you in GeMUN 2020!

Yours faithfully,

Alberto Giovanni Repetti

Under Secretary General Dear participants of GeMUN 2020, It's my pleasure to invite you all to the

seventeenth session of our Genoa Model United

Nations Conference that will take place in Genoa

from the 20th to the 22nd of February 2020!

My name is Sara Ferrari, I am seventeen years old and I am currently attending my fourth and final year at Deledda International School.

I first started off MUN in Middle School back in 2015 when I was 12 years old, with my first conference in the Netherlands.

From that moment on I continued participating to MUN events in Genova and also in other places. Through the years, I have grown a real passion and interest towards MUN conferences, my public speaking skills have improved and lead me to challenge myself even more by playing roles such as Deputy Chair and then Main Officer and I have also been part of the organization of a two days’ debate for my school.

Moreover, I have covered the position of President of the General Assembly at last year's GeMiniMun as well as President of the security Council, this year I have the honour to serve you as Under Secretary General.

This year's conference theme is: "Beyond Borders: towards 2030”. A society beyond borders isn’t a choice, an abstract concept or an afterthought: it’s a necessity. From the refugee crisis, economic instability and gender equality movements to calls for sustainable and environmental change, in 2020 there is a particular sense of urgency that pulls on all of us to question, to challenge and to create the world we want to live in. GeMUN 2020 will be an unforgettable experience for all of us.

I am looking forward to meeting you all in February!

Yours truly,

Sara Ferrari

Under Secretary General Dear participants of GeMUN 2020,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the seventeenth session of GeMUN, which will run from 20 to 22 February 2020.

My name is Giacomo Sarno, I am seventeen years old and I am currently attending my last year of high school at the “Deutsche Schule Genua”.

My first MUN experience was in 2016 when I was still 13 years old. I was fascinated by the figure of the delegates and I admired them very much and for this reason I decided to get busy.

Later I participated in various MUN conferences and with the school I went to CamMUN 2019. But my life as a delegate did not satisfy me enough and for this reason I tried to become an officer of GeMUN 2019.

I succeeded and exceeded my expectations as I became the Main Chair of the SOCHUM conference. Now I am here, writing to you as Under Secretary General, and I can assure you that my joy right now is so great that I could never describe it to you in words.

This year's theme is “Beyond Borders: towards 2030”. Given the sensitivity and importance of this theme I am very proud to be able to return to the Secretariat of this edition. Looking beyond the borders that divide our societies is fundamental, we must know cultures different from ours and exchange point of views. Because in the end GeMUN, like any other MUN conference, is this: to exchange ideas in order to know and live peacefully in a civilized state.

Not to take too long, I greet you and invite you to participate in GeMUN 2020. I am looking forward to meet you all in Genoa,

Yours faithfully,

Giacomo Sarno

Under Secretary General Dear participants of GeMUN 2020,

I am glad to welcome you all to the seventeenth session of our annual MUN conference that will take place from the 20th to the 22nd of February 2020 in our beautiful city, Genoa! I am honored to serve this year’s conference as Under Secretary General. My name is Francesca Sezzella, I am 18 years old and I am currently attending my fifth and final year at Liceo Linguistico Internazionale Grazia Deledda, where my studies are focused on languages. The beginning of my MUN career dates back to 2016; since then I have taken part in seven MUN conferences, as delegate and chair, participating as well to committees abroad in Saint Petersburg, The Hague and Jerusalem. Moreover I took part in GeMINI 2019 as Secretary General. Throughout the years I have learnt so much thanks to MUN, befriended a lot of people coming from the most disparate countries of the world and been in contact with various cultures from which I learnt how important it is to consider different points of view on the same matter in order to guarantee the benefits of everyone. This year’s conference theme is “Beyond borders : towards 2030” which really is a topic that touches me, as still nowadays it is evident that new borders keep rising between people and keep separating them. In a world where cooperation is the only key to solve the issues at hand, we need to understand the roles of borders at a 360 degrees perspective, which needs to take into account every aspect of our society. I really hope that GeMUN will be an unforgettable experience for every participant and that everyone will make the best out of it! Looking forward to meeting you all in February, Francesca Sezzella

President of ICJ Dear participants of GeMUN 2020,

My name is Margherita Peirano, and I’m attending my senior year at Liceo Linguistico Internazionale Grazia Deledda, where I study English, Chinese and Arabic.

After having participated in the GeMUN conference as delegate, judge and registrar, this year I’m honoured to serve as president of the International Court of Justice.

All the MUN experiences I took part in gave me the chance not only to visit several extraordinary cities such as Turin, Saint Petersburg and Lisbon, but also to join a unique worldwide community.

Even if this is going to be my last GeMUN, I would still like to invite all students to attend this international conference because, sooner or later, every student benefits from this wonderful experience.

It is a pleasure for me to introduce the case that the ICJ will debate during GeMUN 2020: “Immunities and Criminal Proceedings” which finds the Equatorial Guinea against France.

In order to highlight the importance of cooperation among countries regarding international crimes and relating to the GeMUN 2020 “Beyond Borders: towards 2030”, the judges will be presented with a dispute that concerns the validity of immunity and the ability of France to put on trial a representative of Equatorial Guinea.

I wish all of you an unforgettable MUN experience,

Yours sincerely,

Margherita Peirano

The Heads of Press Fellow GeMUN participants,

we are beyond happy to cover the role of Heads of Press this year and to welcome you to the 17th

session of Genoa Model United Nations.

We are Ludovica Francesia and Miyuki Musenich both attending Liceo Linguistico Internazionale

Grazia Deledda at our second last and last year.

As Heads of Press we are constantly committing ourselves in order to provide you a week-by-week

documentation of what it takes to prepare the MUN conferences through our social network pages,

and to create newspapers which we strongly suggest you buy so that you will have the chance to

find out something more about either the topic or those who, among students and teachers, have

worked hard these past months to guarantee that, once again, this year Genoa would be hosting an

MUN conference.

We really want to thank each one of our reporters and photographers: without them we wouldn’t

have accomplished any of our goals.

A special thank also goes to all the members of Staff and Security and to our MUN directors.

Yours faithfully,

Ludovica and Miyuki

The Heads of Staff and Security Honorable Participants, fellow Officers and Delegates, esteemed Visitors, indispensable Staff,

Security and Press,

We are honored to welcome you all to this outstanding Genoa Model United Nations 2020.

In the months anticipating this extremely important event, we worked really hard in order to make

this conference unforgettable and to make it a fruitful experience.

It is our honor to participate in this and help all of you with all you need and to make you feel at

home although you are far away from yours.

We enjoy what we do because it makes us feel useful and part of a fantastic group of people, full of

ideas and willing to do anything to make a difference in our world.

We would like to thank every single member of our magnificent Staff and Security because

everyone was indispensable and they put their skills to work, facing responsibilities and cooperating

to make these days as enjoyable as possible.

We want to thank all the participants as well, because without you this experience would not be

the same.

We hope you can use this experience to grow, learn new things and have useful debates.

It is time to make a difference and you have the chance to do so. It is imperative that you let your

voices be heard in a moment of history where often people prefer avoiding problems.

Yours faithfully,

available at MUN related activities, students should exercise wisdom, remembering that their conduct reflects on both their school and the program in general.

The use of any form of narcotic drug is expressly prohibited. If you do not have a badge, you will not be allowed into meetings or GeMUN Assembly. Lost

badges may be replaced for a fee of 10 € at GeMUN Office (Palazzo Ducale 1st floor). If a delegate loses the placard. He/she will be asked to pay an extra fee of 5 € for a new one.

Resolution must be computer-typed.You may use your own USB memory stick. Delegates are allowed to see their own notebooks or laptops.

Photocopying and Notepaper

The Executive Staff in the Secretariat provide several important services to the delegates. As many delegates want to use these services at the same time, the secretariat is usually very busy. Delegates are therefore requested to be patient and cooperative. Approved resolutions will be copied automatically in sufficient numbers for the forums concerned, so that delegates need not concern themselves with this. Please note that posters, flyers and other publicity material will not be copied.

Stay in Hotels, City Hostel or Community Housing

Special financial arrangements have been made for your benefit. The cooperation of everyone is necessary to ensure the on-going success of this program. Students in Community Housing should note that it is difficult to find families willing to offer hospitality to MUN delegates. The host families receive no payment for this service. A letter of thanks or a small present after your return home is always a welcome token of gratitude.

Transport

Be sure to always check timetables of public transport so that you know when travel will be available. Allow for possible bus or train delays due to commuter traffic. Please do not forget to punch your ticket when you travel by bus. It is possible to buy tickets at newspaper kiosks or tobacconists.

Notes

Each delegation will be responsible for supplying its own headed notepaper and sufficient copies of draft resolutions. Each note must be written on official delegation stationery. The name and section of the receiving delegation must be clearly written on the front of the note. Notes will be screened and thrown away if they contain improper messages.
