• Europe became divided among the Communists and Democrats

• This became known as the “Iron Curtain” by Winston Churchill

• England, France, and the USA allowed their zones to form one country– Withdrew their armies– Even did this in Berlin!

• Stalin wanted the capital, Berlin – How could he get it?

• USSR cut off highway, water, and rail traffic into Berlin’s western zones– The city faced starvation

• Stalin gambled that the Allies would surrender West Berlin
