TechniquePlace the next piece, which will be a background spire
fabric, right side against the previous fabric. Remember to
overlap the crease by approximately ¼". Th e arc foundation
paper should be aligned vertically away from you, and the
excess background fabric should be toward you.
Pin if you would like. Flip the unit over and stitch on the
line, again from one outermost line to the other.
Before you trim, be sure that the piece you just sewed covers
the background spire area: fold the background piece over
onto the foundation. Once you are satisfi ed that the area
will be covered, cut away the excess background and the
spire fabrics leaving an approximate ⅛" seam allowance.
Tip
If you are using very light fabrics against dark fabrics, pay
careful attention when trimming. You may want to trim the
fabrics in layers (also called grading the seam) so that there is
no shadowing of the darker fabric through the lighter fabric.
Continue stitching, trimming, and fl ipping the fabrics onto
the arc foundation until the pattern has been covered.
Trim the arc foundation on the outermost line. Th ere should
be a ¼" space between the spire tips and the trimmed edge.
You can choose to stay stitch around the perimeter of the
arc by stitching about ⅛" away from the raw edge.

When you can’t decide which colors to use in your quilt, grab a bundle of fat quarters,
add a little yardage, and you’re on your way. Th is is not a scrap quilt, but a “collection” quilt.
Save the cutaways from this piece; they will make a gorgeous mini quilt (see page 74)!
50" x 50". Made by Linda Eaves, Middletown, New Jersey; quilted by the author.

To be sure that the split seams stay straight in this block, cut the background and pie shapes precisely.
DO NOT leave the extra fabric allowance (your “personal measurement”—see page 8) when cutting.
Also, use the traditional method of pinning HEAVILY to set in the pie and background shapes.

Make 16 copies of the spire strip foundation pattern
on page 67 to yield 16 spire strips.
Make 1 copy of the Skewed Square-in-a-Square block
pattern on page 64 to yield 4 corner blocks.

Th is project is another stash quilt—an exercise in using up what you have available—
so I am only giving you cutting requirements for the blocks, no yardage.
