2010 South Carolina Football 2010 NotebookA LITTLE HISTORY: This is the 117th season of inter-collegiate football at the University of South Carolina, dating back to 1892. It is the 104th-consecutive year in which South Carolina has competed on the gridiron. The University did not field a team in either 1893 or 1906. Carolina owns an all-time record of 534-536-44.

SUCCESSFUL ERA: South Carolina is enjoying some of its best years on the gridiron in school history. Since Head coach Steve Spurrier’s arrival, Carolina has:v Had back-to-back senior classes leave with a school-record 28 victories in their four-year careers. Twenty-eight wins over a four-year period had happened just once previously (1987-90).v Put together back-to-back seven-plus win seasons for just the sixth time in school history. The others: 1924-25; 1979-80; 1987-88; 2000-01; and 2005-06. v Posted six straight non-losing seasons, the longest stretch since putting together seven consecutive non-losing years from 1928-34.v Been bowl-eligible for six consecutive years, the lon-gest streak in the modern era.v A head coach that has taken his team to four bowl games, becoming the first coach in school history to do so, while needing just five years to accomplish that feat.v Defeated the fourth-ranked team (Ole Miss) in the country in 2009, only the second time Carolina has knocked off a top-5 ranked squad.v Put together a Rivals.com top-25 recruiting class for six straight years.v Developed a distinctive home field advantage. The Gamecocks protected their house by winning six of seven games at Williams-Brice Stadium in 2009. It was their best home mark since posting a 6-1 record at home in 1988.v Posted a team GPA of 2.695 during the Fall 2009 semester, the highest GPA on record.

THEY’RE BACK: The Gamecocks have 53 letterwin-ners back to begin the 2010 fall camp. The 53 lettermen consist of 25 offensive players, 25 defensive players and three specialists. A complete list of the returning letterwinners can be found on page 12.

SQUAD BREAKDOWN: The Gamecocks have 108 players listed in the 2010 media guide. The squad breakdown includes 18 seniors (including nine fifth-year seniors), 25 juniors, 32 sophomores, 12 redshirt freshmen and 21 true freshmen.

IT’S A NUMBERS GAME: The Gamecocks return 93 percent of their rushing yards, 99 percent of their pass-ing yards and 83 percent of their receiving yards from a year ago. In addition, 16 of the squad’s top 20 tacklers (all who registered in double digits) return for the 2010 campaign.

RECAPPING 2009: South Carolina finished the 2009 season with a 7-6 record overall including a 3-5 mark in SEC play. The Gamecocks got off to a 5-1 start, in-cluding a 16-10 win over No. 4 Ole Miss, and moved to as high as #22 in the Associated Press poll. After dropping four of their next five, which included losses to Alabama and Florida, the nation’s top two teams, the Gamecocks rebounded to knock off No. 15 Clemson in the regular season finale. The Gamecocks earned a bowl bid for the fourth time in the last five years, falling to UConn by a 20-7 score in the fourth annual Papa-johns.com Bowl in Birmingham, Ala. The Gamecocks were 4-1 in non-conference contests and finished 6-1 in the friendly confines of Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia. Carolina was one of six SEC teams to finish with a 7-5 regular season record.

GOING BOWLING: The Gamecocks played on New Year’s Day or later for just the sixth time in school his-tory and for the second-straight season, as they were invited to the Papajohns.com Bowl in Birmingham, Ala. on January 2 to face the Connecticut Huskies out of the Big East. 2010 NotebookTHE HEAD BALL COACH: Steve Spurrier begins his sixth season directing the Gamecock football program. He has logged a 35-28 mark in Columbia. The Head Ball Coach ranks sixth on the school’s all-time wins list and seventh in games coached at South Carolina. He is the first coach to have a career winning record at Caro-lina since Joe Morrison (39-28-2) patrolled the side-lines from 1983-88. Coach Spurrier owns a 177-68-2 mark as a collegiate head coach, with stops at Duke and Florida before his stint at South Carolina. He is signed through the 2013 season.

PERFECT RECORD: Head coach Steve Spurrier is a perfect 38-0 all-time against schools outside of BCS automatic qualifier conferences, including a 12-0 mark since coming to South Carolina. He defeated Florida Atlantic and South Carolina State in 2009, and will have a chance to extend his mark with 2010 games against Southern Miss, Furman and Troy.

ONE OF FOUR: Head coach Steve Spurrier is one of just four coaches to record 100 or more wins as an SEC coach against SEC competition (he also has three wins against SEC teams while coaching at Duke). Only legendary coaches Bear Bryant (159) and John Vaught (106) have won more SEC conference games than Coach Spurrier’s 105. Vince Dooley also logged 105 SEC wins. “Shug” Jordan and Phillip Fulmer fell just short with 98 wins each.

WINNING MORE OFTEN: The Gamecocks have put together six straight seasons of .500 ball or better for just the second time in school history. The last time Carolina had that many consecutive non-losing sea-sons was when they had a school-record seven straight non-losing seasons from 1928-34.

28 DIVIDED BY FOUR: The Gamecocks have won 28 games over the past four seasons (8-5, 6-6, 7-6, 7-6), matching the school record for wins over a four-year period. They also won 28 games from 1987-1990 un-der the direction of Joe Morrison (8-4, 8-4) and Sparky Woods (6-4-1, 6-5) and again from 2005-08 (7-5, 8-5, 6-6, 7-6) in Coach Spurrier’s first four seasons at the helm.

PROTECT OUR HOUSE: The Gamecocks have im-proved their play at home over the past four seasons under head coach Steve Spurrier. After going just 3-4 in 2006, the Gamecocks went 4-3 in 2007, 5-2 in 2008 and posted a 6-1 record at Williams-Brice Stadium in 2009. The 6-1 mark was the Gamecocks’ best home mark since posting a 6-1 record in 1988.

JOHNSON EARNS LONG-TERM DEAL: Assistant Head Coach–Defense ellis Johnson parlayed another strong campaign into a long-term contract that is de-signed to keep him in Columbia for several seasons. Johnson, who was raised in nearby WInnsboro, S.C., has been directing the Gamecocks for the past two sea-sons. He originally signed a three-year deal in January 2008 and had one year added to his contract in October 2008. His new deal, which was approved in February 2010, takes him through the 2013 campaign.

WOLFORD OUT; ELLIOTT IN: The Gamecocks had one coaching change during the offseason, with former Appalachian State offensive line coach Shawn elliott hired to replace Eric Wolford, who took the head coach-ing position at Youngstown State University. Elliott will oversee the Gamecocks’ offensive line and was also given the title of Running Game Coordinator.

WELCOME BACK: Several players either did not par-ticipate or were limited in spring while recovering from injuries. Those players who hope to be back for the fall camp include TB eric baker (left knee), LB reginald bowens (right shoulder), DT ronald byrd (left knee), DB Chris Culliver (left shoulder), DE Cliff Mat-thews (left shoulder), LB rodney Paulk (right knee), OL Quintin richardson (right shoulder), DT travian robertson (right knee), WR deangelo Smith (right foot) and TE Mike triglia (right shoulder).

EARLY ARRIVALS: The Gamecocks added three new scholarship players to the squad in January. Fullback Matt Coffee signed with the Gamecocks in Febru-ary 2009 but did not enroll at South Carolina until January while rehabbing a knee injury. Junior college transfer Qua Gilchrist returned to his home state af-ter spending two years at Butler County CC in Kansas. The Abbeville, S.C., native was redshirted his first year at BCCC while making the conversion from running back to linebacker, so he has three years to play three seasons at South Carolina. True freshman, quarterback Connor Shaw, was the lone early high school gradu-ate to enroll at Carolina in January.

ENROLLING EARLY: The Gamecocks welcome fresh-man quarterback Connor Shaw into the fold this spring. Shaw graduated from Flowery Branch (GA) High School in December, enrolled at Carolina in January and went through his first spring drills. Shaw became the 10th freshman since Coach Spurrier’s arrival in Columbia to enter college earlier than the norm. Clark Gaston did so in 2006, while Stephen Garcia and travian robertson arrived in January of 2007. Jay Spearman, C.C. whitlock and Shaq wilson all went through spring drills in 2008 after graduating from high school in the previous December. In 2009, Jarvis Giles, Stephon Gilmore and devonte holloman made the early leap from high school to college.

SIZE MATTERS: The tallest player on the roster is de-fensive end devin taylor, who checks in at 6-8, just ahead of defensive tackle ronald byrd, who is listed at 6-7. The shortest player is tailback bryce Sher-man, who is listed at 5-4. The Gamecocks have eight players who tip the scale at 300 pounds or better, led by 330-pound freshman offensive lineman Du’Von Mill-sap. Six of the other seven are also offensive lineman, including rokevious watkins (319), Jarriel King (310), t.J. Johnson (305), Kyle nunn (304) Ste-ven Singleton (303), and nick allison (301). Junior college transfer byron Jerideau (310) is the only de-fensive player listed at over 300 pounds. Former track sprinters bryce Sherman (152) and Marty Markett (168), and freshman punter Patrick Fish (165) are only players that check in at under 170 pounds.

2010 South Carolina Football 2010 NotebookTHE 2010 SCHEDULE: When playing as a member of the Southeastern Conference, the schedule on pa-per always looks imposing. That’s the case again for the Gamecocks in 2010. The season gets started with a Thursday night contest against Southern Miss on Sept. 2. It will mark the fifth time in Coach Spurrier’s six years that Carolina will open on a Thursday in front of an ESPN national audience. The Gamecocks SEC opener is set for Saturday, Sept. 13 when they host the Georgia Bulldogs. Carolina’s third-straight home game will be played the following week when it hosts in-state FCS school Furman. The Gamecocks will go on the road for the first time on Sept. 25 when they travel to Auburn. The Auburn game begins a stretch of seven straight conference battles. After an off week, defending national champion Alabama makes a visit to Williams-Brice Sta-dium on Oct. 9. The Gamecocks will have back-to-back SEC Eastern Division road games at Kentucky and at Vanderbilt, Oct. 16 and 23, respectively. That will be followed up by a pair of SEC home games versus Ten-nessee and Arkansas on Oct. 30 and Nov. 6. The SEC schedule closes on Nov. 13 when Carolina travels to the Swamp to face the Florida Gators. The season con-cludes with a pair of non-conference affairs. Carolina will host Troy on Nov. 20 in the home finale, then travel to Clemson on Nov. 27 for the annual Palmetto State showdown with the Tigers.

BOWL GAME PARTICIPANTS: Ten of the Game-cocks’ 11 Division I opponents in 2010 participated in bowl games following the 2009 season. Of those 10, six were bowl game winners, including Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida and Clemson.

TOUGH HOME SLATE: The Gamecocks have seven home games in the friendly confines of Williams-Brice Stadium in 2010, but the competition will be formidable. All six of their Division I opponents (Southern Miss, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas and Troy) com-peted in bowl games following the 2009 season. Those six opponents combined for a 53-26 record.

THURSDAY NIGHT SPECIAL: For the sixth-straight season, the Gamecocks will play a Thursday night con-test on ESPN. They will open the 2010 season at home against Southern Miss on Sept. 2. Carolina opened its 2005 season on a Thursday with a win against Central Florida. In 2006, the Gamecocks opened the season at Mississippi State on a Thursday and came away with a 15-0 win. They also lost a mid-season Thursday night contest at home to Auburn. In 2007, they defeated eighth-ranked Kentucky at home on a Thursday night. In 2008, they played the first two games of the season on Thursdays – defeating NC State before falling at Vanderbilt. Last season, they opened the year with a Thursday night win at NC State, then knocked off fourth-ranked Ole Miss on a Thursday night at home. Carolina is 6-2 over the past five years in Thursday night spe-cials, including a 4-1 record at home and a 2-1 record on the road. The Gamecocks are 4-0 in season openers on Thursdays under Steve Spurrier.

ROTATING ON AND OFF: With the rotation schedule of SEC West opponents, the Gamecocks drop Ole Miss from their schedule and pick up Auburn for the next two seasons. The Gamecocks will play at Auburn on Sept. 25. The Tigers will return the trip to Columbia during the 2011 campaign. After the 2010 campaign, Alabama will drop off the schedule while Mississippi State is slated to come back on.

BOWL TIE-INS: The SEC has tie-ins with nine games during the 2010-11 bowl season:Music City Bowl Nashville, Tenn. Dec. 30AutoZone Liberty Bowl Memphis, Tenn. Dec. 31Chick-fil-A Bowl Atlanta, Ga. Dec. 31Outback Bowl Tampa, Fla. Jan. 1Capital One Bowl Orlando, Fla. Jan. 1Gator Bowl Jacksonville, Fla. Jan. 1Allstate Sugar Bowl New Orleans, La. Jan. 4AT&T Cotton Bowl Arlington, Texas Jan. 7Papajohns.com Bowl Birmingham, Ala. Jan. 8

THEY PAY TO SEE THE GAMECOCKS PLAY: The Gamecocks have one of the top fan bases in collegiate football. During the 2009 season, Carolina averaged 75,369 fans at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, ranking 17th in the nation in average attendance. Not surprisingly, the two sellouts were in the season’s fi-nal two games against top-ranked Florida (79,297) and versus Palmetto State rival Clemson (80,574). The Gamecocks also played in some hostile environments as well, including trips to Tennessee (96,623) and Ala-bama (92,012).

WORKING OVERTIME: The Gamecocks have played just two overtime games in their history, both at Ten-nessee. They dropped a 23-20 decision in Knoxville on Sept. 27, 2003, then fell by a 27-24 score on Oct. 27, 2007, at Neyland Stadium. Every other SEC team has played at least four overtime games since the rule was established in 1996.

RECRUITING SUCCESS: The Gamecocks are com-ing off another successful February signing day. They signed 24 players to National Letters of Intent, includ-ing a pair of junior college players. The class includes three of Rivals.com Top 100 list, with Marcus latti-more ranked No. 10, victor hampton checking in at No. 60 and Kelcy Quarles ranked 91st and three of the ESPNU 150 including Marcus lattimore (19), a.J. Cann (85) and Kelcy Quarles (124). Here are the Gamecocks’ recent recruiting class rankings ac-cording to Rivals.com. and Scout.com:

Paulk injured his knee in August of 2008 and saw limited action in the first four games of that campaign before sitting out of the remainder of the season. He was granted his first medical redshirt following the season. In 2009, Paulk suffered a season-ending knee injury in the season-opening win at NC State, and was granted his second medical redshirt. He sat out the spring drills this year while continuing his rehab work, but enters the fall listed atop the depth chart. A marine science major, Paulk is slated to gradu-ate in December. 2010 OutlookWith 53 lettermen including 17 starters returning from a team that posted wins over fourth-ranked Ole Miss and in-state rival Clemson, South Carolina fans are op-timistic about their team’s fortunes in 2010. The Game-cocks lost just 12 letterwinners off last year’s 7-6 squad, of which only seven saw significant playing time, giving head coach Steve Spurrier one of his more experienced squads as he begins his sixth season in Columbia.

The Carolina offense officially returns eight starters, but can boast as many as 13 players that started five or more games during the 2009 campaign. With the exception of wide receiver Moe Brown, all of the skill position play-ers return, including quarterback Stephen Garcia and Freshman All-America wide receiver Alshon Jeffery. Shawn Elliott takes over as the offensive line coach, the unit’s third coach in as many seasons. He brings a little of the successful Appalachian State spread offense scheme with him, which hopefully will make the attack a little more formidable. Overall, the Gamecocks return 93 percent of their rushing yards, 99 percent of their passing yards and 83 percent of their receiving yards from a year ago.

QUARTERBACK: With a full season under his belt, ju-nior quarterback Stephen Gar-cia needs to take the next step to become a leader on the squad and establish him-self as one of the SEC’s top signal-callers. Garcia, who took nearly every meaningful snap during the 2009 campaign, has all the tools to be successful and is the league’s active leader in career passing yards. Many around the program feel that a run to the SEC title could hinge on Garcia’s continued de-velopment and maturity. The Lutz, Fla., gunslinger is 8-8 in his career as a starter and has passed for 3,694 yards and 23 touchdowns in his career while complet-

ing 55 percent of his passes. Other than Garcia and Stephon Gilmore, who saw very brief action in the Wildcat formation late in the season, no other player on the roster has taken a snap from center in the Gar-net & Black. Don’t be surprised if the Gilmore package is used with more frequency this year. True freshman Connor Shaw enrolled at Carolina in January and quickly worked his way up the depth chart. The son of a coach, Shaw is known as a “gym rat” who loves to play the game. While it is not usually a recommended prac-tice to throw a true freshman into the SEC wars, Coach Spurrier has indicated Shaw may get a chance early on if Garcia should falter. Former walk-on Zac brin-dise, whose brother, Noah, played for Coach Spurrier at Florida, has been around the program the longest of the backups and, along with redshirt freshmen andrew Clifford, will push Shaw for that number two role en-tering the fall. Walk-on sophomore Seth Strickland and incoming freshman dylan thompson round out the quarterback contingent.

TAILBACK: The Gamecocks were very young at the tailback position a year ago, but now feature four backs who have gained a significant amount of experience at the collegiate level. Sophomore Kenny Miles is the team’s top returning rush-er. He carried 117 times for 626 yards in 2009 as a red-shirt freshman, an average of 5.4 yards per carry, and rarely was tackled for a loss. He put together three 100-yard rushing games, going over the century mark against Kentucky, Vander-bilt and Clemson. Senior brian Maddox is the veteran

leader of the group. He excels at pass protection and catching the ball out of the backfield. Maddox logged a season-best 82 yards rushing in the hard-fought loss to Florida. Jarvis Giles had an up-and-down campaign as a true freshman. His season was highlighted by a 113-yard effort in the win over Florida Atlantic, but he did not play in two of the last three games. Giles and fel-low sophomore bryce Sherman have more big-play ability and need to get the ball in their hands in the open space to make things happen. Sherman, a former track athlete, was the surprise of the fall camp a year ago and, like Giles, can make people miss despite being under-sized. eric baker, who was listed atop the depth chart going into the spring a year ago, suffered an ACL injury during the bowl practices and was not available during the spring. Despite the plethora of returning backs, all eyes in the fall will be focused on newcomer Marcus lattimore. The prized recruit of the 2010 freshman class, Lattimore was considered one of the nation’s top prep running backs a year ago.

FULLBACK: The fullback position is in the capable hands of senior Patrick diMarco. DiMarco, who serves as a team captain, is regard-ed as an excellent blocker. He can also catch the ball out of the back-field, as his three receiving touchdowns will attest. With Carolina expected to have fewer two-back sets, DiMarco may get moved around more this fall, as a spring exper-iment at the tight end position was deemed a success. Freshman Matt Coffee made his first appearance for the Gamecocks in the spring. Coffee originally signed with Carolina a year ago, but did not enroll until this spring while rehabbing an injured knee. Solid walk-on dalton wilson adds depth at the fullback position and also has been used on special teams. Walk-on Jacob baker rounds out the backfield unit.

2010 South Carolina Football 2010 Outlook

WIDE RECEIVER: Despite losing starter Moe Brown to graduation, the Gamecock receiv-ing corps should be one of the strengths of the offense in 2010. Once again it’s a very young group, with dion leCorn the only senior listed on the depth chart. LeCorn hopes to be back at full strength after suffering a broken ankle in the 2009 Garnet & Black Spring Game, then suffering a lacerated kidney late in spring drills this year. How-ever, to get on the playing field in his final campaign, LeCorn will have to challenge a quartet of big receivers in 6-4 Jason barnes, 6-4 alshon Jeffery, 6-5 tori Gurley and 6-4 d.l. Moore. With 29 games played including 17 starts, Barnes has the most experience and is looking for a breakout year as a redshirt junior. Jeffery was on everyone’s Freshman All-America list last fall after leading the team with 46 catches for 763 yards and six touchdowns. Included were three 100-yard receiving games, including a career-high 161-yard effort against Vanderbilt. Gurley posted 31 receptions last fall as a redshirt freshman and scored two TDs, although he had three others called back due to penalties in the first two games. He also logged a 100-yard receiving game dur-ing the 2009 campaign. Moore, a sophomore, continues to improve and earned a significant amount of playing time in 2009. He had a strong spring and is considered even with Barnes for the starting spot this fall. Junior Stephen Flint has shown good hands in practice and could be a factor this fall. The Gamecock coaches are hoping a trio of redshirt freshmen, deMario bennett, deangelo Smith and lamar Scruggs, could sepa-rate themselves and work their way into the rotation as well, but Smith suffered a setback when he was forced to sit out all of the spring after breaking his foot during the offseason. Cedrick Snead and Kevin white add veteran depth to the roster at wide receiver. With a glut of very tall wideouts on the roster, Carolina recruited a pair of smaller, shifty receivers to add to the mix. nick Jones and ace Sanders, who stand just 5-8 and 5-7 respectively, would give the offense a different look if they are able to crack the rotation in their first season. They are also candidates to help in the return game on special teams.

TIGHT END: The Gamecocks are not overly stocked at the tight end position, but have a couple of returning players who are more than capable. Senior weslye Saunders has all the tools to be a huge factor in the Carolina attack. He caught 32 pass-es a season ago, doubling his total from 2008. At 6-6 and 273 pounds, he is a difficult matchup for oppos-ing defenses. Sophomore Justice Cunningham was a pleasant surprise last fall as a true freshmen, showing excellent blocking skills and a strong work ethic to earn some early playing time. Don’t be surprised if Patrick diMarco gets a look here as well in an effort to get him on the playing field more consistently. The senior who has spent all of his Carolina career at fullback, made a smooth transition to the tight end spot in the spring and figures to be used extensively this fall. He is an excellent blocker and also has shown very good hands. Sopho-more Mike triglia has made some improvements and could have used a strong spring to gain more playing time in the fall but was sidelined following offseason shoulder surgery. Walk-on Kyle Madden, a transfer from Central Florida, joined the team this spring. He will try to make an impression on tight ends coach Jeep Hunter. True freshman Corey Simmons, the son of former NFL Pro Bowler Clyde Simmons, will join the squad this fall.

OFFENSIVE LINE: Shawn Elliott has the task of devel-oping the offensive line in 2010. Elliott, a Camden, S.C., product, is the O-Line’s third position coach in as many years, and hopes to bring some of the same schemes that helped Ap-palachian State to three straight FCS Championships to Columbia. The Gamecocks lost two offensive linemen in Garrett Anderson and Lemuel Jeanpierre, who both saw significant action over the past four seasons, but return several candidates that have extensive experience in the SEC trenches. It will be up to Elliott to determine which position is best for each of the players and which five will comprise the starting lineup. The closest thing to a “lock” going into the fall for a starting role is sophomore t.J. Johnson. Johnson was the only offensive lineman to start every game during the 2009 campaign and earned a spot on the SEC All-Freshman team. However, Johnson made the transition to center in the spring after playing right guard last fall. Backing up Johnson at center is junior ryan broadhead. At 6-5, 310-pounds, senior Jarri-el King certainly looks the role of an SEC lineman and has made 19 starts over the past two years. Projected by some as a possible first-round NFL pick, King figures to hold down the all-important left tackle position, protect-ing the quarterback’s blind side. The right tackle position will be interesting to watch, as both junior Kyle nunn and senior hutch eckerson have seen significant ac-tion during their Gamecock careers. A pair of seniors who saw limited action a year ago, enter the fall as the projected starters. Garrett Chisolm, who seemingly came out of nowhere as a walk-on a year ago is pro-jected ahead of redshirt freshman nick allison for the starting nod at left guard, while terrence Campbell, who was a forgotten member of the 2009 squad after missing most of the season with neck and shoulder problems, is penciled in ahead of junior rokevious watkins at the right guard spot. Campbell is listed as a senior, but could get a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA for the 2011 season, as he has had two medi-cal redshirt seasons. Junior Quintin richardson missed the spring following shoulder surgery, but is another candidate with experience at a tackle position if he can come back healthy in the fall. Watkins’ for-mer junior college teammate, Steven Singleton, was listed behind King at the left tackle position following spring drills. The coaches are anxious to get their first look at a six-pack of true freshmen offensive linemen this fall. While it’s extremely tough to expect true fresh-men offensive linemen to make an impact, especially in the SEC, Coach Spurrier has indicated he would have no reservations in playing a youngster if they prove they are capable. The six include a.J. Cann, Cody Gibson, du’von Millsap, ronald Patrick, Corey robinson and trammell williams.

2010 Outlook

The Carolina defense, the team’s strong suit over the past few seasons with back-to-back top-15 national rankings in total defense, figures to be very strong again in 2010. While seven of the 11 starters return, the Gamecocks have a couple huge holes to fill, most notably the shoes of the unit’s top playmaker, All-Amer-ican Eric Norwood. Norwood, Carolina’s first three-time first-team All-SEC pick, will be playing on Sundays this fall after setting school records in sacks and tackles for loss. Strong safety Darian Stewart, defensive tackle Na-than Pepper and defensive end Clifton Geathers, also will be missed. Ellis Johnson and staff began plugging those gaps in the spring but tried to do so without a full deck, as several of the key returnees were not available while rehabbing from offseason surgeries. Coach John-son and his staff look forward to the fall camp where they hope to have all of their bullets at their disposal. In addition to filling the roles of the departed starters, Johnson and his lieutenants plan to flip veteran defen-sive backs Chris Culliver and Akeem Auguste, with Cul-liver moving to cornerback and Auguste to free safety. Led by those two players and sophomore cornerback Stephon Gilmore, the Carolina secondary is considered the fourth best in the nation.

D E F E N S I V E LINE: The defen-sive line numbers were a little thin in the spring, but as-suming everyone returns healthy in the fall, this unit should be a strong suit. Senior de-fensive end Cliff Matthews is the Gamecocks’ best defender and plays with a passion that is matched by few. He is mentioned on

everyone’s preseason first-team All-SEC list and is on a few national “Watch Lists” after being a second-team all-league performer last year. After being a bit over-shadowed by Norwood in the past, expect Matthews to be the guy opponents will have to gameplan for in 2010. He has accounted for 105 career tackles including 17.5 tackles for loss and 10.0 sacks. He will man one end of the line with sophomore devin taylor expected to start on the opposite side. Taylor battled Geathers, who turned down his final year of eligibility, for playing time last fall and will continue to improve as he fills out his large six-foot, eight-inch frame. Senior ladi ajiboye and junior travian robertson anchor the middle of the line. Ajiboye has tremendous quickness and pow-er, while Robertson is also blessed with strength and power. Ajiboye could be a postseason all-league selec-tion with another standout campaign. Neither Matthews or Robertson participated in the spring but should be ready in the fall. Junior Melvin ingram benefitted the most from Robertson’s absence in the spring. The for-mer linebacker continues to show progress and could have a breakthrough season in 2010. Kenny davis, a sophomore with tremendous potential, needs to con-tinue to improve to be counted on in the rotation this fall. ronald byrd missed the spring as he rehabs from an ACL injury. Junior college transfer byron Jerideau could be a quick fix to add quality depth in the middle of

the line. He will enter the fall as the heaviest defensive lineman on the squad, tipping the scales at 310 pounds. True freshman J.t. Surratt will also have an opportu-nity to make an early impression at defensive tackle. At defensive end, junior byron McKnight benefitted from more reps in the spring and showed he is serious about taking the next step in his career. He could work his way into regular duty coming off the edge. Redshirt fresh-man Chaz Sutton has the coaches excited about his ability and looks to solidify a spot in the rotation with a strong summer and fall camp. Sophomore reginald bowens has the physical tools to be a contributor, but missed the spring after undergoing shoulder surgery. He hopes to make a successful transition to defensive end this fall. Lack of depth forced the Gamecocks to take off the redshirt of aldrick Fordham last fall. He and redshirt freshman Chaun Gresham, who made the transition from linebacker to defensive end in the spring, figure to compete for playing time, along with highly-regarded true freshman Kelcy Quarles, who is a legacy at South Carolina, as his father, Buddy, played for the Gamecocks from 1984-87.

LINEBACKER : The Gamecocks will miss the big-play ability of standout Eric Nor-wood, but have more quality depth throughout the linebacking corps this season. Junior Shaq wilson, the team’s leading tackler a year ago, made the transition

to the “Will” posi-tion in the spring after playing the “Mike” last sea-son. Although a bit undersized at 5-10 and 226 pounds, Wilson is one of those players that just gets the job done. Junior rodney Paulk hopes to stay away from injuries that have sidelined him throughout his Carolina career. He is a leader and figures to play a prominent role in the fall if he is close to 100 percent physically. He was granted a sixth year of eligibility over the summer by the NCAA, and now has two years remaining on the playing field for the Game-cocks. A pair of former junior college teammates, tony Straughter and Josh dickerson, are listed on the

2010 South Carolina Football 2010 Outlooksecond team entering the fall behind Wilson and Paulk, respectively. Both are seniors and expected to make more of a contribution with a year of the system under their belts. Another JUCO transfer who joined the squad in the spring, Qua Gilchrist, has a chance to challenge for a regular role as well. How quickly he can learn the system will dictate his time on the field. Gilchrist, who has three years to play three at South Carolina after red-shirting his first year at Butler County Community Col-lege, could play either linebacker position, but is listed as a “Mike” entering the fall. Sophomore Quin Smith may have the most untapped potential of the lineback-ers according to the coaching staff. A productive special teams player last season, the coaches are still trying to figure out Smith’s best position. He begins the fall listed as a “Will” linebacker. Walk-on billy byrne could help on special teams. The only true freshman newcomer at linebacker is brandon Golson, who played just two seasons of high school football at Calhoun County.

CORNERBACK: The Gamecocks had some big holes to fill at cor-nerback a year ago after losing Cap-tain Munnerlyn, Carlos Thomas and Stoney Wood-son, all who at least were invited to an NFL camp. Although they were young and relatively inexperi-enced, the corners held their own dur-ing the 2009 season and should only get better over time. Stephon Gilmore holds down the boundary cornerback position. Starting every game at cornerback as a true freshman in 2009, Gilmore earned accolades on several Freshman All-America squads. He already is tabbed as a preseason All-SEC candidate and has even received preseason All-America recognition by several prognosticators. He will be backed up by junior walk-ons Marty Markett and brandan davis. Markett, a former member of the Gamecocks’ track team, was impressive in the spring and leaped into the mix for playing time. Davis is a role player who can be a solid backup. Sophomore Jay Spearman is an athletic player, but has battled injuries throughout his career. If he can remain healthy, he could give the coaches anoth-er option from which to choose. On the other side of the

field, senior Chris Culliver is slated to transition from free safety to cornerback, which projects to be his best position at the next level. Unfortunately, Culliver, who earned second team All-SEC accolades by the Associ-ated Press as a free safety last season, was not avail-able in the spring after undergoing shoulder surgery. However, the Carolina coaches expect the experienced secondary player to pick up the nuances of the corner-back position quickly. Junior C.C. whitlock was the beneficiary of more reps in the spring and continues to show improvement. He is expected to see more playing time in 2010. Redshirt freshman Jimmy legree adds depth to the position. He showed good ball skills and plays a more physical game. A pair of true freshmen in victor hampton and Cadarious Sanders round out the cornerback candidates. Hampton was impressive at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

SAFETY: The Gamecocks lose strong safety Darian Stewart, but return all of the other safeties and Spurs. Playing time will be hotly contested with no seniors in the mix for the starting spots. Junior akeem auguste moves to free safety which is probably his best posi-tion, after playing cornerback last fall. He has excellent instincts for the ball and likes to hit. Sophomore d.J. Swearinger, who also played cornerback as a true

freshman last fall, also transitioned to the free safety spot in the spring. Swearinger is a physical tackler whose experience at corner will only help. devonte holloman gets the first shot at replacing Stewart at strong safety. Just a sopho-more, Holloman provides leader-ship and showed improvement as his freshman year progressed. He helped turn the Clemson game in fa-vor of the Gamecocks with his key 54-yard intercep-tion return which helped set up a Carolina touchdown. Redshirt freshman Corey addison and junior alonzo winfield are penciled in to back up Holloman. Ad-dison is a physical player who performed well on the scout team a year ago, while Winfield is a smart and experienced player who has also been used at the Spur position. Junior antonio allen figures to get the nod at the Spur position, but will be challenged by sopho-more damario Jeffery. Allen has the ability to be a playmaker and finished the 2009 year strong. Jeffery played a lot of snaps as a true freshman and has a huge upside. Sophomore Jarrett burns will get a look at Spur after playing at the free safety position a year ago. Special teams contributor blake baxley and walk-ons Jared Shaw and Matt o’brien are the returning players that add depth to the secondary. O’Brien arrived in the spring. Sharrod Golightly and brison wil-liams are the two recruited freshmen who will join the team as safeties in the fall.

2010 Outlook

All of the key players return for the Gamecocks’ special teams in 2010, including punter/placekicker Spencer Lanning, who was solid, and at times, spectacular last season. While parts of the special teams were among the best, as witnessed by success on 17-of-20 field goal attempts and the squads’ five blocked kicks, which tied for the nation’s eighth-best mark, some areas need to be addressed this season, including a kick coverage unit that surrendered three touchdowns.

PLACEKICKER: An area of concern entering the 2009 season after the departure of Kan-sas City Chiefs’ draftee Ryan Suc-cop quickly proved to be an area of strength with the emergence of Spencer lan-ning as the place-kicker. Lanning, who has handled the punting chores in each of the past two seasons, took on the added responsibility of the placekicking duties and performed admirably in his first tour of duty. He connected on 17-of-20 field goals on the season, an 85 percent success rate, with a long of 47 yards. He also converted 28-of-29 extra points and led the team with 79 points overall. Joey Scribner-howard, who transferred to South Carolina from Carson-Newman, took the lead for the No. 2 placement duties in the spring and is the most likely candidate the Gamecock coaches would turn to if something would happen to Lanning. adam yates, who handled most of the kickoff duties a year ago, and former North Carolina kicker Jay wooten are also in the mix. Walk-on Josh newton joined the squad in the spring.

KICKOFFS: The coaches would prefer to have a kickoff specialist, rather than forcing Lanning into handling all three facets of the kicking game. Last season, adam yates handled those chores. Yates, who could not con-sistently get the ball to the endzone, had mixed results, which opened up the competition in the spring. Joey Scribner-howard came out of the spring penciled in as the likely candidate to take over that role in 2010, although he will have to contend with Yates and former North Carolina kicker Jay wooten. The Gamecocks need to have more consistent kickoffs to help the cov-erage unit that allowed three kicks to be taken to the house in 2009.

PUNTER: Spencer lanning has handled the punting chores in each of the past two seasons and figures to be the odds-on-favorite to do so again in 2010. Lanning is a model of consistency, as he averaged 42.1 yards per punt in 2008 and 41.9 yards in 2009. Walk-on eric davis has improved tremendously from last spring and held off a challenge from Tennessee transfer C.J. hei-nz for the backup punter role in the spring. Scholarship newcomer Patrick Fish joins the squad in the fall. Un-less something unexpected happens, don’t be surprised to see Fish redshirt during his first season in the Garnet and Black while Lanning completes his eligibility.

DEEP SNAPPER: Senior Charles turner has been a consistent short and deep snapper for the Gamecocks over the past three years and enters the spring as the No. 1 snapper again this year. He is not without competition how-ever, as sophomore walker inabinet has impressed the coaches with his abilities despite his smaller stature. Veteran walk-ons Matt Grooms and Chris vaughn provide depth. In-abinet, Grooms and Vaughn also proved they were will-ing to do whatever it took to help the team, as they were each recognized with the Gamecock Unselfish Award at the 2010 Garnet & Black Spring Game for working on the depleted defensive line during the spring.

HOLDER: Wide receiver Stephen Flint returns for his third season as the holder and will be backed up by reserve punter eric davis.

KICK RETURNER: Chris Culliver is the school’s all-time leader in kickoff returns (94) and in kickoff return yardage (2,215), which also ranks fifth all-time in the SEC. However, Culliver gave up those kickoff returns duties in the middle of last season to former track sprinter bryce Sherman. Sherman did a respectable job, but was unable to break a long return and aver-aged about a yard and a half less than Culliver. Either is capable of handling those duties again this season. It’s possible one of the incoming freshmen could also get a look as a kick returner in the fall.

PUNT RETURNER: Stephon Gilmore handled the brunt of the punt return duties last year as a true fresh-man and did an admirable job, averaging just over 10 yards per return. He took one to the house at Tennes-see, only to see it called back by a penalty that occurred behind the play. Phil Steele thought enough of him to name Gilmore to the preseason second-team All-SEC squad as a punt returner. akeem auguste also has experience handling punts.
