THE GREEN ECONOMY STARTS HERE

About
Jo FlemingExecutive Director
“Let's be more intentional about the choices we make. Because our decisions are never made in a vacuum - they always have an impact on the world around us.”
Conservation and the economy can work together to protect California’s most cherised resources.
The California Green Busi-ness Network leads the state in working with hard-to-reach businesses to create a vibrant, green economy.
Since 1996, the Network has offered technical assistance and economic incentives to help business owners make
lasting changes that (i) improve their bottom line, (ii) protect the environ-ment, (iii) grow the work-force, and (iv) provide a green marketplace for conscientious consumers.
Led by a coalition of state, local, utility and non-gov-ernmental organizations,
the program achieves its mission by recognizing and promoting to the public businesses that meet high sustainability standards.
The Network was formal-ized as the official state program in 2011 (A.B. 913 Feuer) and is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
The California Green Business Network is nonprofit organization focused on sustain-ability. We partner with local governments & utilities to help businesses meet a trans-formative set of environmental standards.
Once they are recognized, we promote Certified Green businesses in their commu-nities to connect them with conscientious consumers and raise the market visibility of our collective sustainability efforts.

GROWTHSince the first round of CalEPA funding
OUR
We added six new programs this year.
We met our two-year goal to certify 1,000 businesses, in twelve months.
Business enrollment has increased by 235% since 2017.
We translated many of our resources to reflect our state’s diverse communities.
“The initial investment from CalEPA tremendously accelerated our program’s reach. For the first time, we were able to standardize sector checklists throughout the state and deepen our marketing effors to amplify businesses’ market visibility.”

A $2 million annual investment from the State would substantially help mainstream the green economy.
Countless underserved areas in our state have demonstrated a critical need for free technical assistance with their sustainability efforts. Micro-businesses are often left out of ratepayer funded conservation incentives. We will intentional-ly expand our reach into these areas and make micro-businesses a priority.
We want to level the playing field.
Staff at the most successful programs in our Network have now reached maxi-mum capacity. We will add more talented coordinators to our growing pool of dedicated public servants.
We want to invest more in what works.
Consumers want to make better choices for the environment, they want to align their values with our businesses. We will accelerate this positive shift in consumer preferences through a statewide digital marketing effort.
We want to tell our story.

Santa Clara County Recycling Website and Hotline Quarter Report 1
College of Social Science Department of Environmental Studies Center for Development of Recycling www.RecycleStuff.org 800/533-841, 408/924-5453 Fax 408/924-5477 [email protected]. One Washington Square San Jose, California 95192-0204
Santa Clara County Recycling Hotline and Website
2nd Quarter Report: October 1, 2018 – December 31, 2018
1) Budget Status a) The 2nd quarter ended within average monthly expenditures for the fiscal year.
2) Completed Projects and Activities a) Staffing and Staff Management
i) Nitza Marquez has replaced Jaime Vega as Administrative Manager. Jaime graduated at the end of the Fall 2018 semester. Nitza transitioned from a CDR service-learning student who had earned academic credit. The other managers are unchanged: Ingrid Velasquez, Project Manager, and; Stephanie Koo, HHW Manager. CDR was also staffed by 15 service-learning students in the fall semester.
b) Website improvements/changes i) A portion of CDR’s budget is allocated for website maintenance. The CDR webmaster
was assigned a contract with a task list via the SJSU Research Foundation. Some costs for website maintenance and improvements will be shared by San Mateo County.
c) Outreach: Social media. Multiple posts were made on CDR’s Facebook page. d) About 6 CDR students were placed into regional recycling jobs. e) Survey questions for visitors of RecycleStuff.org were drafted for consideration in the
upcoming FY. f) Duplicate material categories were eliminated on R-Stuff. g) Worked with Lisa Rose to contact cities about the availability of RecycleStuff.org on their
city websites. 3) Projects and Activities in Progress
a) Listing Updates. CDR student staff are continuing to contact each of the approximately 1600 listings in the RecycleStuff database to update. We expect this project to continue throughout the Spring 2019 semester. Staff is also reviewing sources on the CalRecycle website.
b) New Sources: CDR student staff are conducting research for new recycling and reuse sources.
c) City Guides. Many cities have returned the annual survey of city garbage and recycling services. Prior to sending out the guides, they were slightly modified to include additional services. However, in reviewing the documents we’ve come to realize that we need more information on hauling and debris box regulations from each city. This information is needed to provide correct information on RecycleStuff.org. When complete, this information will be uploaded onto RecycleStuff as PDF’s and the data will also be entered into our searchable database.
d) San Mateo County. CDR continues to operate RecycleStuff.org as the recycling website for San Mateo County (SMC). This benefits SCC by linking the resources of an adjacent county and sharing operational and maintenance costs of RecycleStuff.
Santa Clara County Recycling Website and Hotline Quarter Report 2
e) Website Improvements. CDR staff is continuing to review websites similar to RecycleStuff to assess possible improvements. Budget permitting, tasks will be assigned to the webmaster for modifications and new features to the website. It’s likely that recommended improvements will be determined later in fiscal year.
f) HHW staffing. Students continue to staff the HHW facility Thursday-Saturday and for special events.
g) Hotline staffing. New student staff are being recruited for the Spring 2019 semester that begins on 1/25/2019. Some Fall 2018 semester students staffed the hotline over the SJSU winter break.
h) Landfills. Each were contacted and to verify data CDR maintains on their services. A guide is being developed to be posted on RecycleStuff.
i) “Garbage Cart.” Student staff have reviewed each city’s website to make a comprehensive list of materials that are not acceptable in recycling carts. We are assessing this information and determining how to enter it on RecycleStuff to support the Recycle Right campaign.
j) Chat line. The IC agreed to fund the RecycleStuff chat line for the 2019/20 FY. The CDR webmaster agreed to extend the December 2018 chatline contract through the 2018/19 FY at no additional cost. The chatline was added to RecycleStuff as part of it 2017-18 FY budget so CDR could respond in real time to questions from site visitors.
k) Hauling services. Each service-provider is being contacted to verify services. We are working on changing how hauling services are listed on RecycleStuff.org.
l) Solar (PV) panels. Staff continue to research possible sources for recycling PV panels. m) Med-Project and Sharps. All drop-off locations listing for SCC have been entered on
ReycleStuff.org. We will likely review the site and reenter new data in the Spring 2019 semester.
n) Unusual Information Requests. The hotline typically receives many unusual information requests. Here’s a few from the past quarter. i) How to discard a sheet with human remains from a death ii) Asbestos furnace duct work iii) Bed bug infested furniture
4) Inquiry Tracking: This report is attached in a separate document. 5) Invoice: The SJSU Research Foundation will process and send an invoice.
