JUNE 2016 A Year End Prayer Dear God, thank you for the many blessings of this past year, and there have been many! Thank you for the wonderful children you have entrusted to our care, and for the warm, caring, and dedicated individuals who have had the privilege of working with them. Thank you for the grace-filled moments that happen here every day, in many different ways. Thank you for the desire to work together, and for the challenges and opportunities that are continually presented to us. Thank you for helping us to create a safe learning environment, where we can take a risk, make a mistake, or produce a Picasso, and always feel the warmth of support. Thank you for the gift of those who are leaving us, the gift of those who are coming to us, and the gift of those who will continue to work for the community of École/Escuela Father Leo Green. Help us to renew our strength of mind, body and spirit this summer, within the safe and loving environment of our families. We ask for your continued blessing. KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATIONS We are still accepting registrations for the French Immersion and Spanish Bilingual Kindergarten 2016-2017 school year. Registration forms are available in the school office. Please note, to be eligible, your child must be 5 years old by March 1st, 2017. Please tell others about our school – word of mouth is our best advertiser! If you know of children who may benefit from our programs, please share this information with them.

Franspañol tickets – Celebrating our French and Spanish languages Last month, a group of students enjoyed a delicious grilled cheese lunch with Mr. Hatch and Señora Pederson because their names were drawn for “getting caught” speaking French or Spanish. This month, we are excited to announce that David (1A), Piper (1A), Alexis (2A), Bohdi (3A), Hanas (4C), and Gracia (6A) will be treated to a special lunch as they are our winners of our Franspañol tickets! Congratulations and keep up the great work using French and Spanish outside of the classroom!

PROVINCIAL ACHIEVEMENT TESTS (PATs) Our Grade 6 students will continue to write their Provincial Achievement Tests during the month of June (please see attached calendar for specific dates, subjects and times). Please ensure your child is present and at school on time as important directions are given prior to the exam start time. After the Provincial Achievement Exams are written, Alberta Learning prepares a chart or profile showing each child’s performance in relation to Provincial standards on each test. Two copies will be sent to the school – one for the school’s record and the other is for parents. These will be sent home in the fall. These dates are on the website calendar:

- Tuesday, June 14, French Language Arts (Part B) - French Immersion ONLY - Wednesday, June 15, English Language Arts (Part B) – all grade 6 students* - Thursday, June 16, Mathematics – all grade 6 students* - Friday, June 17, Science - all grade 6 students* - Monday, June 20, Social Studies - all grade 6 students*

*for these exams, French Immersion exams are in French and Spanish Bilingual exams are in English

GRADE 3 SOCIAL JUSTICE – BAKE SALE The grade 3 classes researched different global organizations in May! Together, the Grade 3 classes voted and decided on a global organization they would like to support together. The grade 3 classes have chosen UNICEF as their organization. The accompanying fundraiser chosen was a bake sale. On Friday, June 10th, both grade 3 classes will be holding a bake

sale for the school. If you would like to donate an item or volunteer to help out that day, please contact Sra. Melissa at [email protected] or Mme Schreiner at [email protected] and let them know as soon as possible.

We appreciate your support of our students!!!

ISA CEREMONY As Escuela Father Leo Green is recognized as being an International Spanish Academy (ISA), the Grade 6 students in the Spanish Bilingual program completing elementary will be honoured on Monday, June 13th at 11:00 am in the school gymnasium. All the students in the Spanish Bilingual program will come together to help celebrate this occasion. The parents of the Grade 6C class are also invited to witness the memorable event. Each student who completes their elementary programming in Spanish receives a Certificate of Excellence from the Government of Spain. This recognition can benefit the students as they continue their studies to completion in Grade 12. The gift of language opens many doors…congratulations to our 3rd class of Spanish Bilingual students completing the elementary program at our school!

YEAR END AND GRADE 6 FAREWELL MASS On Friday, June 24th, we will be having a mass for our school year end at St. Dominic Savio Parish at 1:00 p.m. This will be followed by a gathering of Grade 6 students and parents in the school gym. Grade 6 parents will receive a formal invitation shortly.

LOST AND FOUND ITEMS If your child is missing any clothing items, etc., please come and check in the two Lost and Found boxes we have at the school. Any items not claimed by the last day of school will be sent to a charity.

REPORT CARDS Final reports cards will be available on PowerSchool on June 28 at the end of the day. We will not be printing report cards.

Home Reading Celebration Our home reading detectives have figured out all the clues in order to solve the secret code: they were able to unscramble all the letters from our monthly riddles and have figured out that our year end party is going to have an ADVENTURE theme! In order to celebrate all our students' literacy successes this year, we will be hosting a year end party on Tuesday, June 27th from 10:30am until 11:50am. We will have a quick assembly in the gym at 10:30am and then students will be able to choose which adventure-themed stations they would like to join! Most of the game options will be outdoors so please make sure your children dress for the weather. A huge thank you goes out to all the families who support our literacy program and make home reading a priority each night!

THANK YOU to our Student Leadership Club We feel so lucky to have been blessed with 32 amazing Grade 5 and 6 students who made up the Fantastic Leadership Group! We are sad to have to say goodbye to our Grade 6 students but we wish them a fabulous transition to Junior High. This club has been highly active throughout the year by running indoor recess games, presenting at Assemblies and hosting SWATNEE at our school. We are so proud of the leadership skills that these students have continued to develop throughout the years. Mme Thomson and Mme Valérie would like to extend a huge thank you to each and every club member who dedicated so much time helping with school events and activities!

June 2016

Blessed are the merciful, for they w ill receive mercy. ~ Matthew 5:7 ~

This scripture passage from the Beatitudes takes on such significant meaning

for us in this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Here, Jesus is teaching his disciples about the heavenly rewards that await people who walk confidently with God during difficult times. His guidance is twofold. It serves to remind those who are struggling that God is with them always. It also serves to call us to the merciful service of those who are struggling.

The Fort McMurray disaster has provided us with the opportunity to show that mercy to which we have been called as a community of believers. The response of our schools and sites has been a beautiful testament to this basic tenet of our faith, mercy. Our communities have collected donations of cash and necessities to meet those basic needs of evacuees. They have also wholeheartedly welcomed in well over 400 students to their classrooms. It has been so uplifting to hear stories of the empathy and compassion that our students are showing to their peers.

Our Budget for the 2016-2017 school year is before the Board of Trustees on the evening of May 31st at their Public Board Meeting. The approved budget will be posted on our website at https://www.ecsd.net/AboutUs/annual_reports/Pages/District-Budget.aspx.

June is a very exciting and very busy time of year for us. We have had a great year of witnessing the growth of our students, and everyone is preparing for summer. June 21st marks National Aboriginal Day in Canada. Many of our students will be participating in activities that celebrate the richness of indigenous culture. That afternoon, many of our staff will be participating in professional development activities through our Aboriginal Learning Services department that will enhance their ability to infuse indigenous perspectives into curriculum on an ongoing basis.

As the summer draws closer, we want to encourage our students to continue enhancing their learning through participation in various community events, outdoor activities, and celebrations. There are many great local attractions, day camps, and fun ways to keep learning over the summer. Active participation in sports, games, music, and hobbies will allow for continued development of physical literacy skills, social skills and enhanced quality of life. It is also wonderful to read some great books over the summer holiday; especially on a rainy day. There are many websites that offer parents ideas and suggestions to keep students engaged with creative projects. The website http://www.todocanada.ca/Summer+Activities+in+Edmonton/ showcases many of the local attractions and events in Edmonton and surrounding area.

I would like to share a final thought from our Holy Father, Pope Francis. In speaking about this Year of Mercy, he tweeted, “The Jubilee is the party to which Jesus invites us all, without excluding anyone.” What a wonderful celebration to be a part of!

I wish you all a blessed summer that is rejuvenating and filled with the wonders to be found in time together with your families! As we prepare to celebrate Father’s Day, please join me in praying for all individuals who provide the love and care that sustains our children on a daily basis.

Heavenly Father, you entrusted your Son Jesus,

the child of Mary, to the care of Joseph, an earthly father.

Bless all fathers as they care for their families.

Give them strength and wisdom, tenderness and patience;

support them in the work they have to do, protecting those who look to them,

as we look to you for love and salvation, through Jesus Christ our rock and defender.

Amen. A Prayer for Christian Fathers, www.xavier.edu

Sincerely, Joan Carr Superintendent

June 2016 As this time of the academic year and its end begins to approach, we begin to review and take stock of the many fine lessons learned and the value provided. One of the most important we teach as a Catholic school system is the worth of a person’s word. To give one’s word means to intend a promise or to offer an assurance: that is, that everything agreed and accepted by one will be provided to another, as in ‘you have my word’. Such a promise ought never to be taken lightly. One’s word is a reflection of one’s honour and very soul. This is a lesson which we help our students to understand and nurture through the Faith, moral lessons and esteemed values we have willingly received, accepted and embraced. Indeed, our word and its expression in follow through is what strengthens our public reliability and reflects our dignity as persons. For Christians, our word is first given on our behalf at our Baptism. As infants, that word is entrusted to others in parents and godparents who extend the worth of their own good word on behalf of their little one. Eventually that word is returned and entrusted to the young individual who will continue to take care of and build it up as he or she matures into adulthood. So, we who then gave our word at our Confirmation remember that such a word is binding and we come to understand and appreciate all the better the responsibility that follows. This word may again be given in the sacraments of service through marriage, holy orders, or religious profession; and, it is most certainly made in our professional responsibilities as teachers and cooperating partners within our faith education. In such cases, the expression of our word is always done publicly because one is sure and wants that word to have a force of the greatest effect. Such is absolutely powerful to realize. To our good parents: please know we are humbled to share and instill this lesson with your children through your assistance, just as we continue to live it as Staff, Administration, and Clergy, and witness to it in all that we do as committed Catholics. Very sincerely your servant in Christ, Fr. Dean Dowle ECSD Chaplain
