VocabularyCh. 3.3

• Gravity is the force that pulls everything toward the center of Earth. It pulls rock down slopes

• Mass Movement- Any one of several processes by which gravity moves sediment downhill.

What are the Different Types of Land Movement?

It’s ALL GRAVITIES FAULT!!!!

Gravity is the force that pulls everything toward the center of

Earth.

• It pulls rock down slopes.

• It can cause sections of rock to fall off cliffs.

• It also can cause movement of a large amount of sediment.

Gravity & Mass Movement

Gravity causes mass movement, any one of several processes that move sediment downhill.

Mass movement can be rapid or slow.

Erosion and deposition both take place during a mass movement event.

The different types of mass movement include:

• L________

• M________

• S________

• C________

Mass Movements- LANDSLIDES

Gravity causes mass movement, any one of several processes that move sediment downhill.

Landslides is an especially destructive kind of mass movement.

How does a landslide happen???

it takes place when rock and soil slide quickly

down a steep slope.

Where do landslides take place you ask???

They take place where road builders have cut

highways through hills or mountains.

RAPID MOVEMENT!!!

Mass Movement- MUDFLOWS

A mudflow is the rapid downhill movement of a mixture of water, rock, and soil.

Where do mudflows occur??

Mudflows often occur after heavy rains in a normally dry area.

RAPID MOVEMENT!!

Mass Movement- SLUMP

What is a slump??

a mass of rock and soil suddenly slips down a slope.

Unlike a landslide, the material in a slump moves down in one large mass.

• Shoulders example• Looks like someone pulled the bottom out

from under part of the slope.

Where does a slump usually take place??

They take place where water soaks the bottom soil that is rich in clay

RAPID MOVEMENT!!

Mass Movement- CREEP

A creep you say???

What is a creep then?

Creep is the very slow downhill movement of rock and soil.

Creep may tilt vertical objects like telephone poles and tree trunks at unusual angles.

Where do creeps take place?

They result from freezing and thawing of water in cracked layers of rock beneath

the soil.

SLOW MOVING!!

Mass Movement

The different types of mass movement include landslides, mudflows, slumps, and creep.

Match each type of mass movement with the appropriate diagram.
