EDUCATION NAHB Designations Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS)

The Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation program teaches the technical, business management, and customer service skills essential to competing in the fastest growing segment of the residential remodeling industry: home modifications for the aging-in-place. The baby boom generation has many choices as this large population of potential clients for remodelers, builders, contractors and occupational therapists considers where to live – but overwhelmingly, seniors would prefer to stay in their own homes. The CAPS designation offers your potential clients what they need most: reassurance that you’ll help them make the choices that will help them stay in their homes safely and securely. In addition, the CAPS designation helps you make your clients’ homes more “visitable.” Even if the home owners don’t think they need additional task lighting, grab bars, and other home modifications for their own use, their family members and visitors might. CAPS helps you help your clients make the right choices, and it gives you more security in remodeling market niche that’s continuing to grow in popularity. Certified Graduate Associate (CGA) Associate members are those professionals who work in the home building and remodeling industry but in supporting roles: the bankers, lumber dealers, engineers, real estate agents and others who make the materials and provide the services that make home building possible. Associate members who wish to set themselves apart from their peers often go for their Certified Graduate Associate (CGA) designation. The CGA curriculum helps these professionals gain a better understanding of the industry they serve from the best source possible: builders and remodelers with years of field experience. The CGA designation affirms your level of industry knowledge and your commitment to your professionalism in the building industry.

Certified Graduate Builder (CGB)

Builders can sharpen their business management skills and better understand today's home building industry with a CGB courses. These classes focus on effective management in the office and on the job site, examine all stages of new home construction and cover topics such as scheduling, estimating, job cost procedures, accounting principles and basic contract law. Certified Green Professional (CGP) The Certified Green Professional™ designation recognizes builders, remodelers and other industry professionals who incorporate green and sustainable building principles into homes— without driving up the cost of construction. The required courses provide a solid background in green building methods, as well as the tools to reach consumers, from the organization leading the charge to provide market-driven green building solutions to the home building industry. Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) Remodelers with at least five years of experience in the industry can apply for the Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) educational designation. Courses in the CGR curriculum are designed to emphasize business and project management skills as the key to a successful remodeling operation.

Graduate Master Builder (GMB) The ultimate symbol of the building professional, the Graduate Master Builder (GMB) designation is for experienced veterans only. Before beginning the GMB designation process, you must have the CGB designation or the CGR designation with five years of building experience, or 10 years of building experience and successful completion of three CGB/CGR courses. GMB courses require additional study, with in-depth instruction geared for experienced building professionals. It’s a significant time commitment, but graduates gain a more complete knowledge of all facets of the home building industry, build a new network of peers across the country, and inform their potential clients of their commitment to the best of home building, customer service and advanced construction techniques. Graduate Master Remodeler (GMR) The Graduate Master Remodeler (GMR) professional designation is held by a select group of building industry professionals: applicants must have at least 15 years of remodeling experience before they are even eligible to be considered for the designation. This program is designed to be the master level of the current Certified Graduate Remodeler designation and requires completion of five additional courses, and having an active CGR for five years or active CR (Certified Remodeler) from NARI (National Association Remodeling Industry) for 10 years.

GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS HBA PAC In 2015, the HBA political action committee (PAC) was revived with a new name and new image. Its

fundraising goals no longer were limited to the annual NAHB BUILD-PAC golf tournament. Instead, members can support the HBA PAC by becoming part of the “Club”.

Elections matter. That’s why it is so important for members to be engaged in the political process. Contributing to BUILD-PAC is one of the best ways to be engaged and shape political outcomes. BUILD-PAC, is NAHB’s bipartisan political arm and helps elect pro-housing, pro-business candidates to federal office. More than 100 NAHB members serve on the BUILD-PAC Board of Trustees, the body that decides which candidates receive support. Only NAHB members may be solicited to contribute to BUILD-PAC, and there are varying giving levels from which they may choose: CAPITOL CLUB – $5,000 annually or $1,666 tri-annually PLATINUM CLUB – $2,500 annually or $625 quarterly GOLD KEY CLUB – $1,000 annually or $250 quarterly DOLLAR-A-DAY CLUB – $365 annually CENTURY CLUB – $100 annually Participation is critical. That’s why BUILD-PAC this year created a new Fair Share level. With a contribution of just $25, far more members can join the fight for housing. BUILD-PAC can accept only personal funds. It is illegal for a political action committee to contribute corporate donations to congressional candidates. For more information, please call the BUILD-PAC staff at 800-368-5242, ext. 8470 or send an email to [email protected]. Additional information is also available at NAHB.org/BUILDPAC.
