Thismanualprovides:

1. GuidelinesforhowtoproperlyformattheTableofContents.

2. InstructionsonthetwowaysofgeneratingaTableofContentsinMicrosoftWord.

3. TableofContentsexamples.

Section1:FormattingtheTableofContents

• ATableofContents(TOC)mustappearinyourthesisordissertationdocument.

• TheitemsthatshouldbelistedontheTOCshouldincludeallpagesfromtheAbstractthroughtheCurriculumVitae.Thus,yourTOCincludes:

o Abstract(startsonpageiii)o Acknowledgements(optional)o Dedication(optional)o Preface(optional)o TableofContents(optionaltoputitontheTOCofyour

thesis/dissertation)o ListofTables(ifapplicable)o ListofFigures(ifapplicable)o Anyotherlistsincluding:ListofDefinitions,ListofAlgorithms,Listof

Equations,etc.(ifapplicable)o Mainbodyofyourtext(e.g.,chaptertitles,headings,subheadings)o AppendixorAppendices(optional)o Bibliographyo CurriculumVitae

• Asthelastdocumentofyourtext,theCurriculumVitaeisthelastitemofyour

TOC.

• ThepagenumberslistedonyourTOCmustmatchthepagenumbersofitemsastheyappearinthetext.

• ThetitleslistedintheTOCmustmatchthetitlesastheyappearinthetext.

• Ingeneral,yourdocumentneedstobebrokendownintoChapters/Sections.

ChaptersmustappearintheTOC.

• ThetitlemustmatchexactlybetweentheTOCandthetext.Thepagenumbermustalsomatchexactlybetweenthetwo.o Forexample,ifthechaptertitle,“Chapter1Introduction:AnUnexpected

listedintheTOC.SubheadingsandsubsectionsarenotrequiredtobelistedinyourTOC.

• Creativedissertations(novellas,novels,andpoetry)thatdonothaveachapterstructureshouldhaveatleast1majorsectionlistedinadditiontotheirfrontmaterialsandCurriculumVitae.CollectionsofshortstoriesshouldlistthestoriescontainedinthecollectionassectionsintheTOC.

Section2:ManuallyCreatingATableofContentsinMicrosoftWord

TherearetwowaysthatyoucangenerateaTOCinWord:typingitmanuallyorcreatingitautomatically.Thissectiondiscussestheformer.TypingtheTOCManually:Thismethodinvolves1)typingtheentries(chaptertitles,headings,andsubheadings)and2)usingeithertabstogetthedottedlines(ellipses)ordotleadersbetweeneachentryanditsrespectivepagenumber.OntheTOCpage:

1. Typethefirstentry

2. PressTabandthentypeitsrespectivepagenumber(remembertomakesuretherespectivepagenumbermatchesexactlybetweenthedocumentandwhatislistedintheTOC

3. ThenselecttheTabstopcharacter.InordertoshowtheTabstopcharacter,click

theHometab.ThenclickShow/Hideintheparagraphgroup.

4. Clickthearrowfoundatthebottomlefthandcorneroftheparagraphgroup.

5. ThislaunchestheParagraphDialogBox.[Alternatively,youcanclicktheFormattabonthetop,thenclickParagraph.ThiswillalsolaunchtheParagraphDialogBox].

6. ClicktheTabsbutton.

7. Type6.4”undertheTabstopposition.Thismeansthatyournumberwillendat

9. UnderLeader,choseoption2forellipsesinyourTableofContents.Or,chooseoption1iftheuseofleadersinthetextisprohibited.

10. ClickSetandthenOK.

11. PressEnter.Typeyournextentry,pressTab,andthentypetheentry’s

respectivepagenumber.

12. RepeatuntilyourTableofContentsisfinished.

Note:Primary,secondary,tertiary,etc.,levelsofheadingsshouldbeformattedpertheruleslaidoutinyourstyleguide.YourstyleguidewillbreakdownhoweachlevelofheadingwillappearinyourtextandinyourTableofContents.

Section3:CreateaTableofContentsinMicrosoftWordAutomatically

InordertocreateaTOCinMicrosoftWordautomatically,youneedtohavealreadyappliedheadingstylestothemajorheadingaswellasallsubheadingsinyourthesisordissertationdocument.ForhelpapplyingheadingstylestotheseitemspleaseseethepdfHeadingsandSubheadingslocatedinSection5:OrganizationoftheThesisandDissertationunderMainBodyofYourTextontheGraduateCollegeThesisandDissertationwebsitehttp://www.unlv.edu/graduatecollege/thesis.AssigningastyletoeachheadingandsubheadingenablesWordtotrackthelocationoftheseitems.ThisthenallowsWordtocreatealistofthemoraTOC.GeneratingaTOCAutomatically:

1. SinceyouwillbegeneratingtheTOCfromheadingstyles,itisimportanttodeterminethatallmajorheadingsandsubheadingshavetheheadingstylethatyouintended.Allofyourmajorheadings(e.g.,chapterheadings,Abstract,TableofContents,etc.)shouldallusetheHeading1style,allofyourprimaryorfirst-levelsubheadingsshouldallusetheHeading2style,andsoon.

2. GotoyourcurrentlyblankTableofContentspageinyourdocument.IfyoudidnotsaveapagefortheTableofContents,thenpleaseadditnow.Makesureyourmajorheading(TableofContents)followstheothermajorheadingsstyle.

3. GototheReferencesTab(alternativelyyoucanclickontheDocumentElementstab).

4. ClickontheTableofContents.ItislocatedonthefarthestlefthandsideoftheReferencesribbon.

5. Choose“InsertTableofContents.”TheTableofContentsboxappears.Clickonthetablabeled“TableofContents.”Asimilarimageshouldappear.

6. ChoosetheOptionsbutton.

7. Themenu“TableofContentsOptions”appears.HereiswhereyoucanchoosewhichheadingsandsubheadingstoincludeontheTableofContents.

8. Attheveryminimum,Heading1mustbeontheTOC.Thus,thecorrespondingTOClevelmustbe1.TherestoftheHeadingstylesareoptionaltoplaceontheTOC,buttheirTOClevelshouldcorrespondwiththesubheadinglevel.Forexample,primaryorfirstlevelsubheadingsareHeadingstyle2andtheirTOClevelis2,secondaryorsecondlevelsubheadingsareHeadingstyle3andtheirTOClevelis3,andsoon.IfyoudonotwantaHeadingstyletoappearontheTableofContentsthenremovetheTOClevelnumber.

9. Onceyouarefinished,clickOK.ClickOKagainontheTableofContentsbox.ThisshouldgenerateyourTOContheTableofContentspage.

Note:Ifyouseemistakesinyourheadingsorsubheadings(e.g.,spacingproblems,misspellings,etc.)ontheTableofContentspage,donotcorrectthemistakesontheTableofContentspageitself.Rather,gototheheadingorsubheadinginyourdocumentandmakethenecessarycorrections.YouwillneedtoupdatetheTableofContentstoreflectthechanges.

UpdatingtheTableofContents:

1. GobacktotheReferencestab.

2. IntheTableofContentssection(farthestleft-handcorner),youwillsee“UpdateTable.”

3. SelectthisoptionandyourTableofContentswillbeupdated.
