  • Activation Prompt or Watermark

When you first start your lab, you may notice a watermark on the desktop indicatingthat Windows is not activated.

One of the major benefits of virtualization is that virtual machines can be moved andrun on any platform. The Hands-on Labs utilizes this benefit and we are able to run thelabs out of multiple datacenters. However, these datacenters may not have identicalprocessors, which triggers a Microsoft activation check through the Internet.

Rest assured, VMware and the Hands-on Labs are in full compliance with Microsoftlicensing requirements. The lab that you are using is a self-contained pod and does nothave full access to the Internet, which is required for Windows to verify the activation.Without full access to the Internet, this automated process fails and you see this

    watermark.

This cosmetic issue has no effect on your lab.

  • IntroductionThis lesson covers the basic topology of VMware Cloud Foundation.

    VMware Cloud Foundation Basics

VMware Cloud Foundation is VMware’s new unified SDDC platform for the private andpublic clouds. VMware Cloud Foundation brings together VMware’s compute, storage, and network virtualization into a natively integrated stack, delivering enterprise-readycloud infrastructure with unique automation and management capabilities for simplifiedoperations that is consistent across private and public clouds.

  • VMware Cloud Foundation Physical Topology

VMware Cloud Foundation consists of one to eight physical racks. Each rack contains 8,16 or 24 Virtual SAN Ready Nodes, one management switch and two Top-of-Rack (ToR)switches. In multi-rack configurations a pair of redundant spine switches are added tothe second rack for inter-rack connectivity.

  • VMware Cloud Foundation Management Domain

EVO SDDC Manager configures the first three servers in the physical rack into themanagement domain. You can optionally expand the management domain to include 4hosts. The management domain hosts all the infrastructure components.

  • Hands-on Labs Interactive Simulation:VMware Cloud Foundation InitialConfigurationThe initial configuration for VMware Cloud Foundation sets up the naming andnetworking required for the VMware Cloud Foundation management infrastructure.

This simulation will go through the initial configuration of VMware Cloud Foundation. Then the simulation will log in to the vSphere Web Client to look at the managementinfrastructure components that were deployed.

    1. Click here to open the interactive simulation. It will open in a new browserwindow or tab.

  • IntroductionThis lesson provides a brief overview of the EVO SDDC Manager topology.

    EVO SDDC Manager

SDDC Manager provides a single-point-of-control for the management of the CloudFoundation system. SDDC Manager provides centralized access to and an integratedview of the physical and virtual infrastructure of the system and is used to create andmanage workload domains, monitor the status of the Cloud Foundation environment, and perform lifecycle management tasks such as patching and upgrades.

  • Hands-on Labs Interactive Simulation:EVO SDDC ManagerVMware Cloud Foundation offers the easiest way to deploy and operate a private cloudfor organizations looking for the lower costs and increased agility of the software-defined datacenter. Unlike build-your-own solutions, VMware Cloud Foundation-basedintegrated systems provide a turn-key solution with automated deployment, simplifiedongoing operations and management, and deep networking integration and capabilities.

The EVO SDDC Manager functions as a dashboard for managing and monitoring the EVOSDDC infrastructure and a portal to other infrastructure components. This simulation willshow the management and monitoring functionality of the EVO SDDC Manager.

  • IntroductionThis lesson provides a demonstration of how to order SDDC infrastructure fromSoftLayer

    VMware SDDC on IBM Cloud

The foundational VMware SDDC components, vSphere, VSAN & NSX combined withSoftLayer Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) enable integration, expansion, and migrationof your on-premise workloads into a high-performance, global cloud resource. Deploy abrand new VMware SDDC or easily extend your VMware footprint around the world on-demand and operate it all with the same VMware management control panel your teamalready uses. Additional benefits include:

    • Deploy an enterprise-class VMware environment in as little as a few hours withon-demand bare metal.

    • A simple, consistent deployment model running VMware vSphere allows you toextend and replicate your on-premises compute, storage, and networkenvironments.

    • Experience consistent control over applications using already establishednetwork, security, and compliance settings from your on-premises VMwareenvironment.

  • Hands-on Labs Interactive Simulation:IBM Cloud - SoftLayer - Order and Buildan SDDC Foundation (15 minutes)Built on a long standing relationship, IBM and VMware enable on-demand provisioning ofbare metal and Software Defined Data Center components, to build enterprise-classVMware environments on IBM Cloud - SoftLayer in a matter of hours (rather than weeksor months).

Using validated server, network and storage configurations on SoftLayer, you canrapidly create new application environments, replicate and use existing managementtools and processes, and meet security and compliance requirements. This InteractiveSimulation will explore ordering and building a SoftLayer environment designed tosupport a VMware Software Defined Data Center which could be used as capacityexpansion, a DR target or a new test and development site.
