Ten years ago, an idea began during a spirited conversation
between two friends on a Southern road trip. Corinne Adams
and Susanne Katz were brainstorming about how to build
a stronger photographic community in Atlanta. Why not
create an event that could bring everyone from the across
the photography spectrum together, to form a real photo
community in Atlanta?
They brought their enthusiasm and new ideas to Mark Maio, then executive director of the Atlanta Photography Group, and the three began to hold meetings. Many of the movers and shakers in the Atlanta photographic community, including Lucinda Bunnen, Chip Simone, John McWilliams, Nancy Marshall, Louis Favorite, Michael Deardorff and Ted Maloof, came to the meetings. Everyone had fresh ideas, and often, very different ideas about what ACP should become, but all agreed that something was needed. What might they call this event? Names were considered: Refocus Atlanta, Focus Atlanta, Lens Atlanta, Lens on Atlanta, and Atlanta Celebrates Photography.
Susan Todd-Raque, a photo-historian and college educator, heard about the group’s activities and enthusiastically started coming to the regular meetings. Todd-Raque had noted the dearth created by the lack of support for the arts in Atlanta, resulting in the exit of many talented graduates to New York.
Suzanne Lee joined the inner circle, bringing the idea to honor Harry Callahan as one of the entity’s first initiatives. Unfortunately, Harry Callahan passed away and much of the interest in the group diminished. People drifted away and soon there were only four people: Corinne Adams, Susanne Katz, Gerald Straw and Susan Todd-Raque. They decided that ACP was too good an idea to let die.
A 501(c)3 was formed with Susan Todd-Raque as President, Susanne Katz as Vice President, Pam Holland as Treasurer, and Corinne Adams as Secretary. Their monies, along with the generous help of Lucinda Bunnen, funded its founding. The first October event, with the help of Bob Khoury of Showcase and Jan Fields of the Showcase School, was a lecture and dinner featuring Joe Sterling and Linda Connor. Over 100 people came out for that event and all involved were sold on the fact that ACP was a great idea.
Thanks to Polly Barr of Strictly Black and White Labs, ACP had its first office. Judy Pishnery made ACP look good by producing the first printed festival guide. And Phyllis Rodbell helped spread the word about ACP.
With this growth, ACP began the tradition of partnering with other organizations to increase the scope and reach of photography events in Atlanta. (The 1999 event guide listed over 30 events related to photography taking place in October, the 2000 Event Guide included over 50 events and the 2001 Event Guide listed over 80 events. Today there are over 150 events throughout Atlanta and beyond).
After several years of creating and producing programs, ACP’s Board of Directors was suffering from burnout. This all-volunteer organization had gone as far as it could go on blood, sweat, and tears, and in late 2003, despite being financially solvent, the ACP Board was exhausted and unable to continue without the ability to fund a staff person. With saddened hearts, they consulted with an attorney to start the procedure for dissolution.
Cathy Fox of the AJC heard the rumor, and wrote an article that stirred the hearts and minds of its readers. What a shame it would be for Atlanta to lose this organization because of lack of support! The community support (and donations) came pouring in and ACP decided to hire a full time Executive Director. Anne Dennington, who was then the director of Lowe Gallery, offered to become ACP’s first full-time Executive Director in 2004. ACP hired Debra Ott as a consultant to help ease this transition.
With Anne’s keen oversight, ACP developed a strong board of directors and started making its mark in the national photography community. The donor base grew and so did the programs. Throughout these changes, ACP maintained its commitment to excellence.
In 2007, ACP hired Michael David Murphy as Program Manager and Amy Miller as the new Executive Director, and the Board of Directors grew to 19 distinguished members. In early 2008, ACP developed ”ACP Now!”, an acclaimed, dynamic resource for photographers, venues and enthusiasts updated weekly at www.acpinfo.org.
As we celebrate our 10th Anniversary [ACP 10], we want to be sure to take this opportunity to thank ALL OF YOU who have been involved with ACP in every way (there are so many of you, too many to mention here!). ACP 10 is only possible thanks to the dedicated support of organizations and individuals throughout Atlanta. We especially thank our volunteers, who have enthusias-tically embraced our mission to create an international city for photography in Atlanta. We want to warmly thank our sponsors and donors, who make our programs possible. We are looking forward to the next ten years!

ACP 10 Opening Reception
Fri., Oct. 3, 2008 7 - 9 pm
This year, ACP will officially launch our 10th festival with an opening reception at the Atlanta Center of Contemporary Art (The Contemporary). This reception will also mark the opening of The Contemporary’s exhibit of the work of Minneapolis-based Paul Shambroom. This exhibition is a mid-career survey that examines his most important bodies of photographic work. These include investigative and lush color images that require the artist to do extensive research to identify locations and contacts, negotiate access, and carefully consider his strategies of format, composition, and scale. The Meetings series of photographs explores the democratic process as witnessed in city council meetings taken in most of the United States of America. Other photographs document the overwhelming architectural and structural conditions at various nuclear sites as well as the men and women currently working at homeland security training sites.
This exhibition is in collaboration with the Weisman Art Museum, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN.
This event is free and open to the public.

Artist Lecture: Danny Clinch
Thu., Oct. 16, 2008 7 - 8:30 pm
Music is, by its nature, emotive, lush, and visceral. Capturing music (and its makers) photographically requires a unique love for the subject and a passion for the craft.
While trends in music photography can lean towards the over-produced and under-valued, Danny Clinch’s work is about the purity of the music and those who create it. Moments of passion stripped down to the basics, like a well-worn Stratocaster.
Danny’s photographs look less like a portfolio of press shots and more like an enormous family photo album. That is, if your family includes Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Johnny Cash. Remarkably, Clinch’s subjects repeatedly reveal their true selves, willingly and without reservation.
Danny’s work has appeared in publications such as Vanity Fair, Spin, Rolling Stone, GQ, Esquire, The New Yorker, and The New York Times Magazine, and his photographs have appeared on hundreds of album covers.
This event is free and open to the public.

Artist Lecture: Suellen Parker
Thu., Oct. 9, 2008 7 - 8:30 pmReception at 6:30
Suellen Parker is an artist who uses sculpture, photography and digital manipulation to explore contemporary themes. The scenes depicted feature characters modeled out of plasteline clay. The sculptures are then photographed and reworked in the computer, along with other photographs to create the final photomontage. These characters are fighting against the contradictions that exist between their ideal self and their physical reality.
Suellen was selected as one of 50 promising emerging photographers featured in the important international traveling exhibition, reGeneration: 50 Photographers of Tomorrow curated by William Ewing of Musée de l’Elysée. Her work has been published in The New York Times Magazine, Discover Magazine, the American Photography juried annual and the catalogue of reGeneration published by Aperture. Suellen’s work is included in the permanent collections of Sir Elton John, Musée de l’Elysée, and Tel Aviv Museum in Israel. She is represented by Stefan Stux Gallery,New York and Jackson Fine Art, Atlanta. Suellen is a professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta.

ACP Film Series: Film and Spirit
Part 1: Blow-Up: Photography, Reality, and Time
Work by Michelangelo Antonioni, and Michael Snow
Sat., Sep. 27, 2008 7 - 9 pmTwo classic films in which the still photograph plays a crucial role.
In Michelangelo Antonioni’s “Blow-Up”, a cocky fashion photographer in 1960s Swinging London has his world turned upside down by his realization that he may have inadvertently photographed a murder. The photos tell one story -- but what really happened? In Michael Snow’s “Wavelength”, four mysterious events happen inside a New York loft as the camera slowly, relentlessly zooms toward an image on the opposite wall. Paradoxically, as the frame narrows in scope and nears its destination, the film takes on an almost spiritual intensity. One of the most influential and written-about works of the 1960s.

Part 2: Songs of Devotion: Films by Nathaniel Dorsky
Work by Nathaniel Dorsky
Wed., Oct. 15, 2008 8 - 10 pm
Since the early 1960s, Nathaniel Dorsky has been one of the great practitioners of meditative cinema. Projected at the non-standard rate of eighteen frames per second (which he refers to as “sacred speed”), Dorsky’s films are an explicit invitation to increase our awareness of moment-to-moment existence and experience a sense of reverence for the visual world.
Alaya is an exquisitely photographed film on the beauty of sand, in which grains of sand and the grain of different film stocks merge into a unique visual texture. Triste and Variations continue Dorsky’s intense engagement with the images of everyday life, skillfully edited to highlight their interrelatedness, and by extension our own.

Part 3: Forest of Bliss
Work by Robert Gardner, and Jonathan Schwartz
Wed., Oct. 22, 2008 8 - 10 pm
Varanasi, India: City of Light, home of Lord Shiva, the Forest of Bliss. Situated on the sacred Ganges River, Varanasi is the site of a daily drama of ritual and devotion: Hindus from all over the country make pilgrimages to worship in the city’s temples; devotees bathe in the sacred waters; and the sick and aged make their last journey here so they may die in this holiest of places. Yet all around, life goes on as normal. In Forest of Bliss, the legendary filmmaker Robert Gardner captures the human drama and daily life of a place like no other on earth. Both personal and universal, the film is as stunning for its sound design as well as its extraordinary imagery. Accompanied by Jonathan Schwartz’s Den of Tigers, a short film which invites us to observe the sights and sounds of West Bengal through the eyes of a visitor.
This event is free and open to the public. Presented in collaboration with Frequent Small Meals and hosted by eyedrum.

Within Our Gates
Work by Bradley McCallum, and Jacqueline Tarry
Oct. 1 - 31, 2008
The artist team of Bradley McCallum & Jacqueline Tarry have developed an important career around site-specific work using photographic media to highlight political and racial issues in America. They have been commissioned to create an original, temporary installation in Atlanta for ACP’s tenth festival, October 2008.
The video-based art project will be notable for its radical transformation of a dormant space in the historic Martin Luther King district of Atlanta. The 1906 water tower was originally part of the South East Atlantic Cotton Compress Warehouses (now Studioplex lofts), and has been granted entry to the Na-tional Register of Historic Places.
Drawing upon the rich film, television and radio broadcast archives of the civil rights collection of WSB, housed at the University of Georgia, McCallum and Tarry hope to create a public art project that will resonate beyond the site, leading citizens from all over to interact with, and learn from this work of art and to experience, in an unprecedented way, an impassioned social protest movement as it unfolded in the Old Fourth Ward, in Atlanta, the US, and throughout the world.

Le Flash
ACP Collaboration: Le Flash
Fri., Oct. 24, 2008 7 - 12 am
Once a year, Paris lights up the city with art for Nuit Blanche. Toronto does the same with all night art revelry. In Santa Monica, Glo transforms the pier, the beach and Palisades Park for art encounters from dusk to dawn. This year, we bring the art of Le Flash to Castleberry on Friday, October 24, from 7pm to midnight.
Fantastical art and creative events will fill our night out in the district. Street corners, galleries, shops, roof tops, vacant lots and empty buildings will be sites for light, sound and unexpected installations, performance art, poetry readings, concerts, music, video projections, a marching band, an iron pour and art happenings of all sorts.
Organized by Cathy Byrd and Stuart Keeler. Presented with Georgia State University Welch School of Art & Design, Savannah College of Art & Design, French Cultural Services, French Consulate in Atlanta, French American Fund For Contemporary Art, Castleberry Hill Neighborhood Association, Friends of Cleopas Park, Fulton County Arts Council, Office of Cultural Affairs.
This event is free and open to the public. Please visit www.acpinfo.org/leflash for a map of Castleberry Hill that indicates installation sites.

Discussion: Great Women in Photography
Wed., Nov. 5, 2008 7 - 8:30 pm
Ms. Rosenblum, a noted historian, lecturer, and author, whose books include “World History of Photography”, and “A History of Women in Photography”. The latter is a comprehensive review of the subject from the mid 1840’s through the present. Her lecture will update photographic history while exploring the emergence of female photographers in Asia and the Middle East, as part of continuing evolution of women in the arts.
Ms. Partridge is a director/producer and cinematographer of documentary films, and has garnered many awards, including an Academy Award nomination for the film about her grandmother, “Portrait of Imogen”. Other works include films on Dorothea Lange and her father, Rondal Partridge. Her presentation will provide a close up of the people in her photographic “family” that created some of the 20th Century’s most iconic images.
The discussion complements an exhibition opening on Friday, November 7th, at Lumière featuring the work of notable female photographers of the 20th Century.
This event is free and open to the public. Presented in collaboration with Lumière.

Sep. 12 - 27, 2008The Jena Project is a remixed, visual analysis of online speech, as seen through a year’s worth of comment threads and discussions of photo-graphs and video made by Michael David Murphy during last summer’s trials, protests, and marches for the Jena Six in Jena, Louisiana. On the one-year anniversary of the marches, The Jena Project offers a mixed-media look behind the curtain at America’s ongoing “conversation on race”, while mapping both language and newsmaking from an up-close (and often binary) street-level perspective.

About ACP
Atlanta Celebrates Photography (ACP) supports Atlanta’s
emergence as an international center for photography.
Through an annual, October festival and year-round programs,
AXP seeks to nurture and support photographers, educate
and engage collectors, promote diverse photography
venues, and enrich Atlanta’s cultural scene.
About ACP 10
October 2008, ACP celebrates its tenth annual festival- ACP 10! During this month, Atlanta will be filled with more than 100 photographic exhibitions, complemented by lectures, films, public art projects, and other special programs, including our annual Photography Auction. The festival attracts professional and amateur photographers of all ages, art collectors, gallery owners, curators and general photography enthusiasts. The festival is also ACP’s primary way of supporting efforts of other local organizations through collaborations and sponsorships.
ACP is the only organization that supports multiple levels of Atlanta’s photography community, from amateur hobbyist to full-time artist, and promotes them, both locally and nationally. ACP also collaborates with museums as well as academic and commercial art institutions to promote exhibitions and programs of high quality and to build an increasingly sophisticated understanding of where photography stands in relation to contemporary art and culture. The overarching goal of our efforts is to play an important role in Atlanta’s emergence as a world-class cultural city.
Photography has been called the great democratic medium – meaning that it is accessible to everyone, is experienced by everyone, and that all of our lives have been touched by photography. This festival strikes a chord with more than 100,000 people in and around Atlanta. We want to thank all of you for supporting us for the last 10 years. We look forward to all that can be accomplished in the next 10.
