GeneralInformation

SchoolofMusicTheSchoolofMusicfeaturesafullcomplementoffacultyartistsandscholarswhoarenationallyknowninthefieldsofperformance,composition,education,musicologyandtheory.Thefacultyareactiveteachers,performers,producers,authors,andofficersinnationalorganizations,andmanyarerecipientsofnationalanduniversityawardsinteaching,research,creativeactivity,andservice.Studentandfacultyensemblesperform,byinvitation,atregionalandnationalconventionsandconferences.TheSchoolofMusicishousedinthreeUniversitybuildings:StanleyB.Catlett,Sr.MusicCenter,DonaldW.ReynoldsPerformingArtsCenter,andCarpenterHall.AnactiveoutreachprogramincludesperformancesthroughouttheStateofOklahoma,thenation,andtheworld.Facultyandstudentgroupsarefeaturedoncommerciallyavailableaudioandvideorecordings.Additionally,theOUPercussionPressandtheJournalofMusicTheoryPedagogyfurtherenhancetheSchool’snationalreputationforscholarlyandperformingexcellence.TheSchoolisamajorunitoftheWeitzenhofferFamilyCollegeofFineArtsandamemberoftheNationalAssociationforSchoolsofMusic.Thedistinctiveundergraduateandgraduateacademicprogramsencourageeachmusicstudenttodevelopspecialinterestsandtalentsundertechnicalandtheoreticaltrainingfromfacultyofthehighestprofessionalcaliber.

MissionStatementTheMissionoftheSchoolofMusicatTheUniversityofOklahomaistoadvancelearning,teaching,scholarlyandcreativeactivity,andservice.Facultyandstudentswillactivelypromoteandcontributetotheteachingprofession,discoverknowledgeasperformersandresearchers,andenhancethedisciplineofmusicthroughprofessionalserviceatthenationalandinternationallevels.Establishedin1903,theSchoolofMusicwasthesecondSchoolontheOUcampusandhasbeenanInstitutionalMemberoftheNationalAssociationofSchoolsofMusicsince1931.TheonlydoctoralgrantingmusicschoolinOklahoma,theOUSchoolofMusicwillserveitsconstituentsthroughtheartisticandscholarlyproductivityofitsfaculty,studentsandalumni.TheUniversityofOklahomawillawardmusicdegreesintheareasofcomposition,education,musicology,performanceandtheory.TheSchoolofMusicatOUwillmaintainitstraditionswhileofferingprogramsthatpreparestudentsforanevolvinganddiversefuture.

StudentBodyTheSchoolofMusiciscomprisedofapproximately250undergraduatemajorsand160graduatestudents.StudentsenrollfromcommunitiesinOklahomaandfromnumerousstatesthroughouttheU.S.aswellascountriesfromaroundtheworldincludingKorea,China,HongKong,GreatBritain,Germany,andMalaysia.TheUniversityofOklahomaannuallyattractsrecordnumbersofNationalMeritScholarsincludingasubstantialnumberofmusicmajors.AsignificantnumberofmusicstudentshavebeennamedNationalMeritScholars,Regents’Scholars,andNationalAchievementScholars,andmanyparticipateintheHonorsProgram.TheSchoolofMusichasoverseventeenstudentperformingensemblesthatperformandtouronaregularbasis.OUMusicStudentsareconsistentlynamedwinnersofprestigiouscompetitionsandnumerousperformingandscholasticawards.PerformersfromtheOUSchoolofMusicparticipateinvarioussummermusicfestivalsaroundthecountryandworld,suchasAspen,Brevard,Tanglewood,Roundtop,and(anOU‐Affiliatedevent)theClassicalMusicFestivalinEisentadt,Austria.Additionally,manycurrentandformerUniversityofOklahomastudentsaremembersoftheOklahomaCityPhilharmonicOrchestra.

WeitzenhofferFamilyCollegeofFineArtsTheSchoolofMusic,alongwiththeSchoolofArt,theSchoolofDance,theSchoolofDramaandtheA.MaxWeitzenhofferSchoolofMusicalTheatre,isacomponentoftheWeitzenhofferFamilyCollegeofFineArtswhichhasadministrativeofficeshousedintheFredJonesCenter,directlynorthofTheReynoldsPerformingArtsCenter.SchoolofMusicstudentshavethedistinctprivilegeofattendingthemanyexcellentperformancesoftheSchoolofDance,theSchoolofDramaandtheDepartmentofMusicalTheatreandviewingoutstandingfacultyandstudentartexhibits.Inaddition,theFredJones,Jr.MuseumisamongthefinestuniversitymuseumsintheUnitedStates,housingaremarkablecollectionandattractinginternationallyrecognizedtravelingexhibits.

TheMASALAWORLDSERIESattheUniversityofOklahomaisdedicatedtobringingdiverseculturalexpressionstoourcampusandtheSchoolofMusic.InIndia,thewordmasalameansamixtureofspicesand,beyondfood,mayapplyinothercontexts,suchasmusicalfusions.TheMasalaSeriespresentsconcertsandworkshopsofworldmusic.Thegoaloftheseeventsistopresentacross‐sectionofmusicanddancefromaroundtheglobethatwillprovidestudentsalivelisteningandhands‐oncomplement(throughworkshops)towhattheyarelearninginworldmusic/musicandculturecourses.RecenteventshavefeaturedPersianclassicalmusicfortheNowruzSpringfestival;NorthIndian‐Jazzfusion;thedanceanddrummingoftheAfrikaniaCulturalTroupofGhana,WestAfrica;andasteelbandfestivalthatbroughttogetherOU’ssteelbandwithlocalhighschoolgroupsalongwithnationalexpertperformersandteachers.Theseconcertsareopentoallstudentsandencourageparticipationandengagementwiththeartistsinworkshopsandaftertheconcertevent.TheRUGGLESNATIVEAMERICANMUSICSERIEShighlightsNativeAmericanmusicanddanceoftheFirstPeoplesofNorthAmerica.TheNORTONLECTURESERIESisascholarlypubliclecturepresentedbythemusicology,musictheory,ethnomusicology,andmusiceducationfacultyoftheUniversityofOklahomaSchoolofMusic.

StudentConcertoCompetitionTheStudentConcertoCompetitionisanannualcompetitionamongstOUSchoolofMusicstudentsatboththeundergraduateandgraduatelevels.CompetitionGuidelines:EligibilityTheConcertoCompetitionisdividedintotwodivisions:UndergraduateandGraduate.Opentoonlyfull‐timemusicmajorswhoarecurrentlystudyingwithamemberoftheOUappliedfacultyinundergraduatedivision(sophomorethroughsenior)orgraduatedivisionattheOUSchoolofMusic.Contestantsmust:

• Havefulltimestudentstatus(Undergrads:12+hours;Graduates,GraduatewithGA:6hours;AllotherGraduatescommensurateto9hoursandup)attheSchoolofMusic

• HavebeenfullyadmittedtoaSchoolofMusicdegreeprogram(noprovisionalacceptanceallowed).

• Havebeenmakingsatisfactoryprogresstowardsthedegreeprogram:Tobeingoodstandingwiththecollegeandeligibletograduate,studentsmust

ReynoldsPerformingArtsCenter(RPAC)andHolmbergHallTheJanMarieandRichardJ.CrawfordMusicPracticeWingTheDonaldW.ReynoldsPerformingArtsCentermaintainsthelookandfeelofaturn‐of‐the‐centuryEuropeanoperahouse,whileaddingstate‐of‐the‐arttechnology.AlikenessofformerFineArtsDeanFredrikHolmberglooksdownfromhisnichehighabovethefrontdoors,whileasculptureofnewspapermagnateDonaldW.Reynoldsgreetsvisitorsontheirwayintotheperformancehall.Combiningthelatesttechnicalequipmentwiththeambianceofaturn‐of‐the‐centuryEuropeanconcerthall,theDonaldW.ReynoldsPerformingArtsCenteroffersthebestofbothworldstoperformersandaudiencealike.Fundedwitha$12.2milliongrantfromtheDonaldW.ReynoldsFoundationofLasVegas,Nevada,andanother$5.8millioninUniversityfunding,thefacilitypreservesthegraceandbeautyofhistoricHolmbergHall,whilerenovatingpracticerooms,updatingthestagehouseandproviding20,000squarefeetofspacetotheOUSchoolofDance.Builtin1918,HolmbergHallhadplayedhosttoaparadeofinternationalcelebritiessuchasLouisArmstrong,AaronCopland,MarthaGrahamandIsaacStern.Butmorethat,thehallhadgivenOklahomansacommunitygatheringplacelikenootherinthestate.Itwasthesiteforcommencements,gubernatorialdebatesandcommunityeventsfromSoonerScandalstotheCimarronCircuitOperaCompany.LongbeforeCatlettMusicCenterandRupelJonesTheater,HolmbergHallwastheperformingartsspaceontheOUcampus.TheJanMarieandRichardJ.CrawfordMusicPracticeWingAvitalcomponentoftheindividualmusicalgrowthofourstudentsistheaccesstofirstclasspracticefacilities.AttachedtotheRPAC,47practiceroomsintheJanMarieandRichardJ.CrawfordMusicPracticeWingareavailabletomusicstudents.ThepracticeroomsarecurrentlyundergoingrenovationwithananticipatedcompletionattheonsetofSpringSemester2015.
