Century College Foundation Scholarships The Century College Foundation awards over 100 scholarships totaling $272,753 to students each year. You may apply for more than one scholarship but only one will be awarded. The application process is online only. Applicants must create an account online and gather the required materials to apply. Once you have all the materials required, upload them with your online scholarship application and submit online before April 1, 2018. All scholarships require the following: • A one to two page essay about your educational and career plans and what sets you apart from

other applicants. • A letter (in some cases two) of recommendation from an instructor, administrator, employer or

community member. • A copy of your unofficial transcript (from Century College, previous college, or high school).

Scholarship Guidelines • You may apply for multiple scholarships but can only be awarded one. If you are in the top ranking

position for more than one scholarship, you will receive the scholarship with the higher dollar award.

• To receive a scholarship, you must be in good academic standing. • You must meet all of the criteria stated in the scholarship profile in order to apply. • You must submit at least one written letter of recommendation and provide all requested

information as indicated in the criteria for each scholarship for which you wish to apply. • You may reapply each year for scholarships even if you were a previous recipient. • The term “credits” refers to those earned by the end of spring semester in the current academic

year or as stated in the criteria. • If you are awarded a scholarship, you must sign an acceptance letter agreeing to the terms of the

scholarship and write a thank you letter to the donor before funds will be released, and you will be invited to attend the scholarship awards banquet in the fall of the year of your scholarship award.

Our scholarship process is fully online! We are happy to streamline the process by using the Award Spring Scholarship Tracking and Review System, which helps match students to scholarships based on answers to a questionnaire that is filled out as part of the online application process.

Tips on asking for a letter of recommendation Things to remember when asking for a letter of recommendation: Faculty at Century College should be familiar with the Century College Foundation Scholarships, and quite likely you are not the first person to ask for a letter of recommendation. Template on how to request a letter of recommendation from a previous/ current professor over email: Dear Professor (insert name), My name is (insert name) and you (were or are) my professor for (insert class). I am applying for a Century College Foundation Scholarship and need a letter of recommendation. I thought to ask you because (Insert reason). I am applying for this scholarship because (insert reason). The scholarship deadline is April 1st, so I would need this letter of recommendation before that. Please let me know if you are willing to write me a letter of recommendation by the deadline. If you would like to meet with me to talk, I would love to set up a time to meet. Thank you, (Insert name). due. Then make sure they can get it done in time. • When talking to them, explain why you are applying for this scholarship. This might include

financial need, desire to take financial pressure off of family, help lower financial burden to parents, to prove something, etc.

• If they say no, it is okay! Have a backup person in mind.

Addie Williams Adult

Purpose To encourage education for adults age 30 or older who have demonstrated aptitude and desire for higher education, career development, life enrichment, and/or self-sufficiency.

Alumni Legacy Purpose The Alumni Legacy Scholarship was established in 2009 by the Alumni Association Board of Directors to attract students who, through family and relationships, have strong connections to the college and who will likely contribute to the development of the college’s relationship with its alumni long-term.

Criteria • Applicant is an incoming traditional or non-traditional student and must submit a transcript ofhis/her education history; • Applicant must write a brief essay that explains his/her family relationship to an alum of CenturyCollege, Lakewood, or 916 Technical, articulate a strong connection to the college and demonstrate a desire to become and continue as a member of the Century College Alumni Association; • Applicants submits at least one letter of recommendation from a relative who attended CenturyCollege, Lakewood or 916 Technical; • Applicant will be enrolled for a minimum of six (6) credits each semester during the academicyear that the scholarship is awarded.

Anderson-Quanbeck Presidential

Purpose To encourage and support new entering students who are the first in their family to attend college.

Amount 1 @ $1,000 split between fall and spring Semester

Criteria • Applicant is a high school senior who will graduate in the top 50% of the senior class andsubmits an official high school transcript; • Applicant is the first in his/her family to attend college and includes this information in thepersonal letter; • Applicant submits two (2) letters of recommendation, one from a high school faculty oradministrator and one from an employer or community representative; • Applicant submits a personal letter outlining personal goals and education objective;• Applicant is enrolled in preferably a minimum of 12 credits during each semester the award isreceived.

Barbara Ann Hoff Memorial

Purpose To Pay Tribute to Barbara Ann Hoff, a loving and caring single mom and Century College employee for 19 years, by supporting single parents who are striving to overcome life’s obstacles while pursuing careers.

Amount 1 @ 1,000 split between fall and spring semesters

Purpose To support a Century College student in financial need.

Criteria • Applicant is currently enrolled at Century College and is registered for aminimum of six (6) credits during each semester the award is received; • Applicant has a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher;• Applicant submits a personal essay that indicates motivation and drive in their pursuit of a highereducation, and demonstrates their financial need; • Applicant submits at least one (1) letter of recommendation from a Century College instructor,administrator, counselor, or community member.

Brown – Keller Scholarship

Purpose

To encourage and support a single parent who has financial need, is highly motivated and shows promise in their pursuit of an education.

Purpose To encourage and support students pursuing an education at Century College.

Criteria • Applicant has completed at least eight (8) credits at Century College and has maintained acumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher; • Applicant is registered for a minimum of four (4) credits during each semester the award isreceived; • Applicant’s personal letter explains a personal and academic goals and financial need;• Applicant submits at least one (1) letter of recommendation from at least one instructor orcommunity member.

Harold Johnson

Purpose To encourage students who are from Pine County and may have graduated from a high school in Pine County or Northern communities in Minnesota to attend Century College.

Purpose To encourage and promote student leadership, activism, and commitment to civic engagement- particularly around gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation at Century College.

Gladys Dickey Teaching

Purpose To honor Gladys Dickey, a lifelong educator, by encouraging students to enter the field of education. Gladys Dickey was born in Iowa in 1888 and began her lifelong career as an elementary school teacher in 1912. She loved children and children’s literature - her enthusiasm for the stories of early American history was contagious. She touched so many lives and enriched them all, not only of her pupils, but of her nephews and nieces, who hope that this scholarship will enable others to follow her example.

Larry Litecky Legacy Teaching

Purpose To encourage and support the educational goals of those aspiring to teach at any level. Dr. Larry Litecky served as president of Century College from 2000-2011. Under his leadership the campus experienced dynamic growth and change. New initiatives to support student success resulted in Century College’s rise to becoming the first college in Minnesota selected for the national Achieving the Dream program. Dr. Litecky believed in the power of Century’s teachers. This scholarship supports the educational goals of those aspiring to teach at the postsecondary level, especially in the community colleges.

Purpose This scholarship was created by a Century College leader in honor of two long-time faculty at Century College, Judith Roy (History, Women & Gender Studies) and Bob Hathaway (English). The purpose of this scholarship is to support a student in their pursuit of academic excellence with a strong interest in either the Social Sciences or English.

Dr. Carl Gerber Scholarship for Leadership and Service

Purpose Dr. Carl Gerber became president of Lakewood Community College in 1968 and completed his service in 1985. He provided the needed leadership to move the new, fledgling college into a highly regarded educational institution. Many of the programs started during his tenure continue on to this day. This scholarship pays tribute to the history of Lakewood Community College and the effective leadership of Dr. Carl Gerber.

Colonel Phillip L. Potter Purpose American Legion Post 566 in Lino Lakes, MN is proud to partner with Century College and offer the Colonel Phillip L. Potter scholarship for Veterans that are continuing their college education.


Criteria • Applicants must be either honorably discharged or currently serving members of any branch ofthe United Stated Armed Forces (Must submit DD Form 214, NGB Form 22, or a memorandum from applicant’s commander if still serving) • All Veterans are eligible to apply for the scholarship, but priority will be given to applicants thatfall into the following:

Purpose To encourage Century College students participating in the SSS/TRiO program to continue their education towards a bachelor’s degree.


Criteria • Applicant is a first generation college student (both parents do not have a bachelor’s degree)who is planning to complete a bachelor’s degree immediately after attending Century College; • Applicant is preferably enrolled fulltime (12 or more credits) at Century College during eachsemester that the award is received; • Applicant must submit a short statement explaining academic and career goals;• Applicant submits a copy of an Academic Plan developed with and signed by the SSS/TRIO Counselor which is allied with the applicants stated goals; • Applicant submits two (2) recommendations, one from an instructor and one from an SSS/TRIOstaff member; • Applicant is a current Century College student who has completed 10 or more MNTC credits witha 3.0 or higher MNTC GPA and has successfully completed a college-level math class.

Jenna Ann Fredrickson Memorial Purpose To encourage and support a student at Century College who has dealt with mental health and/or substance abuse problems or issues. Jenna grew up in White Bear Lake, MN and graduated from WBLHS. She was creative, with a sense of humor while being adventurous. Her interests included reading, writing, animals, and nature. The scholarship is sponsored by her family who remember her for her spirit, courage, and love of life.
