Employees of the City of Sydney1842 c.1900

Letter from Isaac Aaron, 1857 (City Archives: 26/29/058)

The list of Employees of the City of Sydney, 1842 c.1900 contains the names of over 5,000 officers and servants (as employees were then termed). As there were no specific staff records (such as staff cards) for the 19th Century, details of employees have been collated from searches through contemporary documents such as correspondence, minutes and reports of Council and its committees.

Details

The City of Sydney records of the 19th Century do not include staff summary records such as we see in more recent years. In the 20th century there are the Staff Record Cards which in time were replaced by the human resources systems we are familiar with today.

In the 19th Centurey employees were mentioned in documents such as letters received or sent by Council, minutes of Council and minutes or reports of Council committees.

A project was commenced to identify as many employees as possible for the period from Councils inception in 1842 to around 1900 when Staff Record Cards were first created. Only two documents have been found that contain all the names of Council employees at a particular time. One, naming 666 employees is from February 1895 [CRS 22/48/22] and the other, naming 658 employees, from January 1898 [CRS22/55/1].

Officers and Servants

The employees of Council in the 19th Century were frequently referred to as Officers and Servants.

Generally speaking Officers were those employed in responsible or senior positions on an annual salary and usually having some degree of permanency in their tenure. Their salaries were set annually. Servants were employees with wage rates set either on a daily or weekly rate. Employees with weekly wage rates occupied more responsible or skilled positions than those on a daily rate. Labourers paid on a daily rate were frequently described as day labourers. In the early years, the day labourers and many of the carters were employed on a weekly basis selected after attending a muster.

Layout

The columns of the document contain: year; surname; firstname(s); position held; description; source/reference. The source is mostly the City Archives item number for the source of the information. You can copy the reference number and past it into a search in Archives Investigator to locate the original document. Those which start with 26/ are Letters Received by Council, 1842-1900. Most of these have been scanned and the PDF can be accessed through Archives Investigator. The references on the first page of the table have been linked where possible to give you a taste of the extraordinary records that can be found in Archives Investigator. Some entries also include references to contemporary newspapers such as the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH).

Acknowledgement

The database and reports of 19th Century staff were created by one of the City of Sydney Archives volunteers. Marilyn Mason spent thousands of hours of her own time in creating this invaluable resource and has made it available to the City of Sydney to publish free of charge. Her meticulous approach and high quality research is reflected in the accuracy and accessibility of the end product. The City of Sydney expresses its gratitude to Marilyn for her tireless efforts.
