    Getting Started

    What’s New in Version 11.20

The following table describes some of the new features in the storage management software version 11.20.

New feature DescriptionStorage array support The storage management software now supports the E5600 storage

array and the EF560 storage array.Online drive firmware update Adds the ability to update drive firmware while the storage array is

operating and online. All selected drives are updated while the volumesstay online and the storage array responds normally to read and writerequests.

Drive support 4K sector drives are supported via 512B emulation.Disk pool enhancements When a disk pool is being created, configuration candidates that offer

tray loss protection or drawer loss protection are now identified and listedfirst. Tray loss protection and drawer loss protection ensure accessibilityto your data if a total loss of communication occurs with a single drivetray or drawer. Your storage array must have six trays or drawers to becapable of this protection. Also, this implementation is focused on initialconfiguration; the tray loss protection or drawer loss protection is notmaintained when additional drives are added to the disk pool.

    Power cycle drivesautomatically

The Drive Power Cycle feature adds a new CLI command that you canuse from a host to power cycle (power off, then power on) an individualdrive in a storage array. If a drive is in an unresponsive state, thefirmware automatically cycles power to the drive in an attempt to correctthe problem. If the drive does not recover, the drive is failed. If the drivedoes recover, reconstruction happens quickly because only the changeddata needs to be reconstructed instead of the entire drive.

Data evacuation If a problem is detected with a drive, the data is automatically copiedfrom the drive and the drive is powered down. If you manually fail adrive, you can also copy the data from it which allows for a faster drivereconstruction.

    Data Center BridgingExchange (DCBX)

The iSCSI statistics report now includes data pertaining to DCBX. Thisdata is available only on the E2700 controller or the E5500 controller withspecific iSCSI host interface cards.

    Microsoft Offloaded DataTransfer (ODX)

You can turn ODX on or off via the CLI. ODX provides a way to transferdata without using buffered read and buffered write operations and doesnot require direct host involvement with the data transfer operation. ODXis available only on the Windows Server 2012 operating system.

    Overview of Enterprise Storage Management

This topic describes the major hardware components and the major software components in the Enterprise StorageManagement environment. This topic also describes the two different network management connections that you canuse to manage the storage arrays.

What Are the Major Hardware Components?

This table describes the major hardware components that are connected to the network for managing the storagearray.

Hardware Component DescriptionStorage array A storage array consists of a collection of both physical components

and logical components. Physical components include drives, controllers, fans, and power supplies. Logical components includevolume groups and volumes. A storage array can span multiplephysical trays. You can manage the storage array by using the storage managementsoftware.

Storage management station The computer that you use to manage the storage arrays on yournetwork.

    Network management station(optional)

A console with installed Simple Network Management Protocol(SNMP) – compliant network management software. The networkmanagement station receives and processes information aboutnetwork storage arrays that it manages. The information is in a formthat is supported by the management information base (MIB) used bythe network management station. The storage management software provides information about storagearray events, using SNMP trap messages, to a configured networkmanagement station.

Host A computer that runs one or more applications that access thevolumes in the storage array over the I/O path.

    BOOTP or BOOTP-compliantDHCP server

A BOOTP or BOOTP-compliant DHCP server assigns the network-specific information for each controller, such as an IP address or ahost name. The BOOTP or BOOTP-compliant DHCP server is optional. It is notrequired if you manage all of your storage arrays using the host-agentmanagement software.

File server (optional) The storage management software optionally can be stored on acentral file server. Management stations on the network can thenaccess the storage management software remotely.

What are the Major Software Components?

The storage management software has three major components:

    Client management software

    Host-agent management software

    Multi-path driver software

NOTE The host-agent management software is optional. The host-agent management software is required only if youintend to manage a storage array through a host.

    Client Management

The client management software contains the graphical user interface for managing the storage array. The clientmanagement software also contains an optional monitor service that sends alerts when an event occurs in thestorage array. The graphical user interface for managing the storage array has two main windows: the EnterpriseManagement Window (EMW) and the Array Management Window (AMW).

The EMW is the first window that appears when you start the storage management software. You use the EMW toadd and discover the storage arrays that you want to manage and to provide a comprehensive view of those storagearrays. A list of storage arrays is stored in a local configuration file. After you have added the storage arrays, youcan use the EMW primarily for monitoring the storage arrays and to launch the AMW for a specific storage array. Allstorage array-specific management tasks can be performed by using the AMW.

You use the AMW to manage the physical components and logical components that comprise a storage array.Management tasks include configuring a storage array, maintaining a storage array, and recovering from a failure.Physical components include drives, controllers, fans, and power supplies, as well as the cables that connect thephysical components. Logical components include volumes and volume groups. The AMW is specific to an individualstorage array. Therefore, you can manage only a single storage array by using the AMW. However, you can launchother AMWs to manage other storage arrays.

    Host-Agent Management Software

You can install the host-agent management software on one or more hosts that are connected to the storage arraysto enable in-band management. The host-agent management software, along with the Ethernet connection on thehost, provides you with another network management connection to the storage array rather than using the individualEthernet connections on each controller in the storage array. For more information about methods for connectingstorage arrays to networks, see "Out-of-Band Storage Arrays" and "In-Band Storage Arrays."

The storage management station can communicate with a storage array through the host that has host-agentmanagement software installed. The host-agent management software takes requests from the storage managementstation through the Ethernet connection to the host and sends the requests to the controllers in the storage arraythrough the I/O connections between the host and the storage array.

    Multi-Path Driver Software

A multi-path driver is also referred to as the I/O path failover driver. There is typically a redundant pair of activecontrollers in a storage array. When you create a volume in the storage array, one of the controllers is automatically ormanually chosen to "own" the volume and control the I/O between the volume and the application host along the I/Opath.

When a component along the I/O path to a controller or the controller itself fails, ownership of the volumes that hadbeen assigned to that controller will automatically transfer to the other controller. The multi-path driver manages thisfailover process.

What Are the Different Ways to Manage a Storage Array?

The storage management software manages all storage arrays over the network. For increased connectivity, you canmanage a storage array using any combination of out-of-band, in-band, or multiple in-band network managementconnections.

When you configure more than one network management connection to a storage array, the storage managementsoftware can discover and identify each connection. The storage management software automatically choosesa connection when you attempt to manage the storage array by launching the AMW. If a particular connection iscurrently not responding, the software tries all other configured network management connections to that storagearray.

  • 4 - SANtricity v11.20 Enterprise Management Window Help

    Out-of-Band Storage Arrays

The storage array is managed directly over the network through the Ethernet connection on each controller in thestorage array. To manage the storage array through these Ethernet connections, you must define the IP address foreach controller or the host name for each controller, and attach a cable to the Ethernet connections in the storagearray.

    In-Band Storage Arrays

Instead of using the Ethernet connections on each controller, the storage array is managed through an Ethernetconnection on a host that is running the host-agent management software.

The host-agent management software receives communication from the client management software and passes it tothe controllers in the storage array along an I/O path. The controllers also use the I/O path to send event informationback to the storage management station through the host.

    Introducing the Enterprise Management Window

The Enterprise Management Window (EMW) provides high-level management of storage arrays. High-levelmanagement of storage arrays includes these activities:

Monitoring the condition of managed storage arrays.

Sending alert notifications through email or SNMP traps to a designated network management station.

The EMW software runs on a storage management station. When you start the storage management software, theEMW opens. The EMW has these tabs:

Devices – Provides information about the storage arrays.Setup – Presents tasks that guide you through adding storage arrays and configuring alerts.

The Devices tab has a Tree view on the left side of the window that shows discovered storage arrays, unidentifiedstorage arrays, and the status conditions for those storage arrays. Discovered storage arrays are managed by thestorage management software. Unidentified storage arrays are available to the storage management software but notconfigured for management.

The right side of the Devices tab has a Table view that shows detailed information for each storage array.

The EMW provides these high-level storage management functions:

Discovers hosts and managed storage arrays on your local sub-network.

Manually adds hosts and managed storage arrays and also removes them.

Adds storage array comments to the Table view.

Sorts rows in the Table view according to different criteria.

Stores your EMW view preferences and configuration data in local configuration files. The next time that youopen the EMW from this storage management station, data from your configuration files is used to show yourcustomized view and preferences.

Monitors the condition of managed storage arrays and reports a high-level status using appropriate icons.

Configures alert notifications through email or SNMP traps and reports events to the configured alert destinations.

Loads the applicable management window for a selected managed storage array to allow detailed configurationand management operations.

    Discovering Arrays

    Understanding the Different Discovery Methods

The storage management software has two methods for discovering and adding storage arrays to your managementdomain, Automatic and Manual.

    Automatic Addition of Storage Arrays

If you choose the Automatic method, the storage management software automatically discovers any storage arraywithin the local sub-network and adds all accessed storage arrays to your management domain. This discoveryprocess can take several minutes to complete. All storage arrays that are successfully accessed appear in theTree view and the Table view of the Devices tab. If a storage array was not successfully accessed, an error dialogappears. Either follow the instructions in the error dialog to continue, or return to the Add Storage Array dialog.

ATTENTION The Automatic addition method could add storage arrays that you do not want to access because itadds all of the storage arrays that are successfully accessed during the discovery process.

    Manual Addition of Storage Arrays

If you choose the Manual method, the Add New Storage Array - Manual dialog appears. You must choose themanagement method for the storage array that you are adding. Depending on the management method, you mustprovide identification information for the controllers or for the host.

NOTE You can add only one storage array at a time using the Manual addition method. You must add each storagearray individually using the Manual addition method.

    Automatically Discovering Storage Arrays

Select Automatic Discovery to automatically detect out-of-band storage arrays and in-band storage arrays on thelocal sub-network.

Keep these guidelines in mind when you use the Automatic Discovery option to discover storage arrays:

Before using this option, make sure that your storage array is configured correctly.

The Automatic Discovery process sends a broadcast message across the local sub-network, and any storagearray responding to the message is included in the Tree view.

In rare cases, a storage array might respond to the broadcast message during the automatic discovery process, but its response is dropped over the network before it reaches the storage management software. If the storagearray response is dropped, the storage array does not appear in the Tree view of the Devices tab. You must selectEdit > Add Storage Array to manually add the storage array. If you need to stop the Automatic Discovery operation for any reason, close the Enterprise Management Window.

To add a storage array that is outside of the local sub-network, select Edit > Add Storage Array. This option is not available if a Rescan, Add, Remove, or another Automatic Discovery operation is currently inprogress.

    1. SelectTools > Automatic Discovery.

  • SANtricity v11.20 Enterprise Management Window Help - 7

    2. ClickOK.Any discovered storage array appears in the Tree view and in the Table view in the Devices tab.

    Performing an Initial Automatic Discovery

The Initial Automatic Discovery dialog appears whenever you open the Enterprise Management Window (EMW)from a specific storage management station and the configuration file that contains data about your managed storagearrays is not present or is empty. The Initial Automatic Discovery dialog lets you add storage arrays automaticallyfrom your local sub-network.

NOTE The Initial Automatic Discovery dialog also appears if the primary configuration file is corrupt and thebackup configuration file is empty. The dialog appears as part of the recovery sequence when the configuration fileshave become corrupt and have been reset as empty files.

To add a storage array use one of these methods:

To start the automatic discovery process, in the Initial Automatic Discovery dialog, click Yes.To manually add storage arrays, in the Initial Automatic Discovery dialog, click No, and perform one of thesetasks:

Select Edit > Add Storage Array.Select the Setup tab, and click Add Storage Arrays.
