New Staff I would like to officially welcome Mrs Osborne (Year 4), Miss Essex (Kindergarten) and Ms

Tonkin (Year 6) to our school. They too have settled in well and loving their classes. Painting The last of our painting should be completed this week. Year 4, 5M and 5L rooms have been

completed this week including our toilets and also a number of doors around the school. Kindergarten We had 80 Kindergarten children commence this year. They too have settled in well and looking forward to the year ahead. Meet The Teacher This has a new look this year to create a casual and friendly opportunity to meet the teacher

and have a chat. Class information will be handed out and an opportunity to make an appointment in the coming weeks. Times are flexible next week to suit parents/families home

commitments. We would love to see you and your children would love you to come. Coffee/Tea

is available on the evening with light refreshments. Skoolbag Don’t forget to add your email to Skoolbag to have all alerts and newsletters emailed to you. This can be done via the app or from our webpage. Swimming Carnival This was a tremendous success and full accolades to Mr Connolly and the Stage 2 and 3

teachers. A great day celebrating success and sharing in the spirit of competition, friendship and support. It was wonderful to see children have a go and challenge themselves to just see

what they could do! This is what learning is all about. School Leaders An official welcome to our school leaders who have already showcased strong leadership in the last week. Our wonderful Mrs Mangold is taking leave towards the end of Term 1, for the majority of the

year. While she is away, Mr Thompson will be Relieving Deputy Principal. A staff list is attached to the end of our newsletter for your information. Looking forward to catching up with you all next week.

Kind regards,

Mr Phil Harris

Principal

From the Deputy Principals Welcome to the school year of 2018 and the wonderful

school community that is Tacking Point Public School. It

is heartwarming to see the smiling faces of all our

student return last week.

Our core values of ‘Respect, Care, Courtesy and Responsibility’ will continue to be reinforced and taught

throughout the school giving students examples of, what each value looks like for many and varied occasions.

As our school is moving forward with our new school plan, it is vital that we continue to foster,

develop and support the ‘whole’ child at school. It is our number one goal that when students

come to school that they feel safe and happy, enabling learning to take place. We are very focussed on our strategic directions of ‘Everyone Matters’ and ‘Life Long Learners’.

We consistently strive to be the best we can be and cater for all individuals to the best of our

ability. We appreciate your ongoing support and commitment that you give to allow us to provide these opportunities for your child/ren.

We are looking forward to a fantastic year ahead and are keen to meet up with you at our new look ‘Meet and Greet’ evenings over the next couple of weeks.

Annual Swimming Carnival Thankyou to parent volunteers who bravely fought the heat at our annual swimming carnival on

Tuesday. The parents, along with the school staff,

made it a great day. Special mention to Pete Murray

and Annette Baker who kept the finish line running

smoothly and to Lerren Apthorpe who wrote out all

the ribbons for every event.

Well done to our sports leaders who took support for

their houses to a new level showing great leadership

qualities. It was wonderful to see so many students dressing up on the day.

Over 430 of our students took part in our annual swimming carnival. It was a busy day with

over 100 races in the 50m pool and even more in the 25m pool. All students are to be

commended for a high participation rate and great sportsmanship in both pools. Congratulations to Tyse Thrower and Megan Goldie who won all six events that they competed in.

The top two performers in each event will be competing at the district carnival on Friday 23rd February where we hope to retain our overall points score trophy.

From the Library Information and Resource Centre Welcome to TPPS 2018 in the Library!

Teacher Librarians: Ms Lea Horan Mon-Fri

Mrs Rachel Esho Tues

Library lessons Each class enjoys one 40 minute Library lesson a week.

Library bags

K-2 Students are required to bring a cloth Library bag to school on their Library day to borrow to help protect our valuable Library

books to and from school.

Children Years 3-6 are encouraged to still bring a Library bag to borrow, however it is no longer compulsory.

Borrowing

Kinder Term 1 – 1 book Yrs 1-2 2 books per lesson

Yrs 3- 6 3 books per lesson

Library opening times

The Library is open 2nd half of lunch for students to read, relax and Years 3-6 to borrow. We usually have quiet reading and/or a

movie in the quiet and cool. The Library is a nice place for respite

off a busy playground if the children choose this.

Bookclub We do offer once a Term Scholastic Bookclub. The catalogues will be coming home with students

Friday 23rd February and orders closing Friday 2nd March.

All orders are placed online through the Scholastic Bookclub website. It is a cashless Bookclub.

Each Bookclub order each Term generally generates a $600 credit for our school Library. That means our students are the real winners with an extra $2,400 of quality literature being

contributed to our Library Collection with no cost to the school.

Each Bookclub issue you will find some amazing bargain prices. It is a great opportunity to

stock up on gifts for birthday parties – have a few titles at hand in a mystery stash for those unexpected invites or when you’re rushed off your feet and don’t quite get to the shops!

However, please do not feel pressured in any way to purchase. It is an added opportunity if

you wish.

Read Aloud Bookmarks

Through the Library I have created and operate a Reading Reward Program that is part of the

whole school ‘Lighting the Way’ award system. It is to encourage and promote the skill of

reading text aloud with correct pronunciation, fluency and expression. Children need to

read aloud to an adult or high school person for ten minutes, and then the adult need only sign off on the record card/bookmark to validate the reading.

Once 14 spaces are complete with signatures, the child returns the bookmark to me in the

Library either before school, lunch 2, Library lesson or after school. The student receives a

commendation award, a sticker, new coloured levelled bookmark to continue and their name is published in the next newsletter to publically acknowledge and reward their reading efforts.

This program has now been operating in the Library for 14 years. The longitudinal data of this

program and the families and children who participate clearly represents students who achieve

academic success if not excellence.

Please see below a template to get you started if your child has not already brought one home

from the Library.

Happy reading!

Bel Canto 2018 Bel Canto will commence on Tuesday 13th February at 8am. We look forward to welcoming back our experienced members, capably led by our 2018 Choir Leaders: Bethany, Samantha, Ross and Nina.

Auditions will be held for students wishing to join Bel Canto on Tuesday 13th February from

9am. Students in Years 3-6 who enjoy singing, have good pitch and are committed to the practice and performance expectations of this prestigious group are welcome to audition.

Musically yours,

Mrs Dayna Moritz & Mrs Robyn Ryan OAM

Colla Voce and Allegro Choirs Colla Voce choir is open to all interested students in Years 3 and 4 (Stage Two) who love to

sing; Allegro choir is for students in Years 1 and 2 (Stage One) who enjoy singing and wish to

experience singing in a choir. Both choirs enable students to learn about using the voice as a musical instrument. Students are taught musical concepts in a fun and engaging way.

Rehearsals for both groups are held during school time, with all other students participating in

class/grade singing at the same time. Students in Years 1 to 4 will be invited to attend choir by their class teachers in coming weeks.

Uniform Shop With the expected arrival soon of our new-style school uniform jackets, the Uniform Shop is

selling our remaining stocks of the old-style school jacket at a reduced price of $15 while stocks

last.

At this stage, we have jackets available in all sizes, although some sizes are limited. They are

currently available to purchase either in the shop or online via Flexischools. We will do our best

to update Flexischools regularly as sizes sell out to avoid purchases we can no longer supply,

and the inconvenience associated with that.

We would particularly like to highlight to all families that there will be a transition phase in

2018 and 2019, during which time the old-style jackets will still be considered valid school

uniform and may be continued to be worn by students.

Thank you Jodie and Fiona
