NINJA NEWS Our school has adopted a site at our local Jenkins Stream on Pascoe Street. This means we are the kaitiaki- guardians, of this stretch of water. It is important that our waterways are clean and clear as they sustain the life. The Green Ninjas visit this creek each term and use a variety of methods to observe the health of the stream. On Friday we had a visit to our site. We measured the stream clarity, which was good, the water temperature which was also good and we tested the pH. We looked at the macro invertebrates, critters, that live in the stream. There were not many of these present which tells us it is not so good. It was good to find a small Common Bully which enjoys still, silty water. We will now continue actions to enhance the water so it is a healthy stream. - Heidi Newland, Enviroschools Coordinator SCHOOL GALA 2017 QUESTIONNAIRE REMINDER Planning for the 2017 Gala needs to start now with setting the date and developing an enthusiastic committee. SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY

The time had finally come for the school cross country on the 1st of June. All of our cross country practice was about to pay off. At 12:30 we started to walk down to the beach. The first to start were the 7 year old girls. It was a 1km course for 8 and under and 2km for 9 and up there was a section on the sand which was the hardest part. There was some very close finishes and tough competition. There was around 150 participants that all did very well in their races and should be very proud. At 2:30 we left to walk back to school. Congratulations Moana for winning the house cup - Ben.R and Jack.P

Well done to all those who participated in the school cross country event on a glorious day at the beach. It was fantastic to see the children who, even though running isn’t their ‘thing’, showed a great ‘SAIL’ attitude and didn’t give up and finished their faces.

Thank you to everyone who helped on the day. The Interschool Cross Country event was held today at Greenmeadows.

Tahunanui School News ROOM 7 SUTER VISIT

One week ago my class went to the Nelson Public Library. We mixed paint, we made a man out of mixed paint, and we also made pallets. Then we came back to school. It was a lot of fun because I love to work with paint. We worked with Esther and talked about the book called ‘My Many Coloured Days’ by Dr Seuss. - Room 7

WHAT IS PUMPKIN? Today in Room 13 we all had to pass the pumpkin around. First we put the pumpkin in the oven. Next we pulled it out. It was yum to me, how about you? - Aviayah

In Room 13 we picked a pumpkin yesterday and today we are eating pumpkin. It smells yummy. It’s making me hungry. This is what we have to do. We cut it then we put it on the tray, then we put it in the oven. It was scrumptious because it is my favourite food. - Hineau

Yesterday Room tekau ma toru picked some pumpkins from behind the Burrell Centre. Today we chopped up pumpkins. Next we put the pumpkins in the oven. We wait, soon we get to eat them. Some have the skin and some don’t. The pumpkin smelled good when the pumpkin was in

the oven. When I tried the pumpkin it gave me the shivers. I used to like pumpkin but now it proves that I don’t like pumpkin. - Corban Today we tried some pumpkin. First we cut up the pumpkin. We put the pumpkin in the oven. Then we took it out to cool, it was delicious because I like the feel and the taste . It was a good taste and it wasn’t too hot or cold. It was warm. I would have it all day long. - Grace B REMINDER - FOOD FOR FAMILIES - School Lunches A nutritious and tasty school lunch for all children. Gold coin

BEFORE SCHOOL SUPERVISION As a result of your interest in our Before School Supervision proposal, we will trial it for the rest of this term, starting next week. Supervision and quiet activities such as indoor games, reading and crafts will be provided by Jacinda Beyer-Rieger in the school library from 7.30-8.30am each day. Children will need to be signed in each day (preferably by parents) and there is a $2 per day charge to cover costs. The breakfast club will also be available from 8.15am. No bookings are required but if you have any questions, please email me at [email protected] - Barbara Bowen

PROPERTY STEERING GROUP We are at an exciting stage of our outdoor property development planning with a draft concept plan drawn up from all your feedback and the gala-fundraised climbing frame ordered for installation later this year. To oversee the implementation of our plan, we are looking to form a property steering group. Ideally this will be made up of representatives from our staff, board and parent community with the enthusiasm and experience to keep driving the project forward. If you would like to be included in this group, please forward your details and area of expertise to [email protected] Our first meeting is scheduled for 2pm on Wednesday 15th June and we’d love to have your input!

STOKE CLUSTER

TEACHER ONLY DAY Thank you so much for your support of our Teacher Only day yesterday. Teachers and support staff from the Stoke/Tahunanui Cluster were inspired by speakers Laurayne Tafa and Marcus Akuhata Brown who reminded us of the importance of connecting, building and maintaining quality learning relationships with our students and practical ideas for ensuring this happens in the classroom. ORAL LANGUAGE: Why we need to talk with our children - Oral language is the most powerful tool that humans use to communicate. - One of the best things you can do for your child is talk with them everywhere, every day, any time. - Every time you talk with your child you are giving them a gift of language. - Remember that talk is a thinking tool - it is the best way for your child to think about problems and how to solve them, or develop their imagination or creative personality traits. - Take the time to talk with your child so that you and your child can become partners in learning. - Adapted from: Home School Partnership Programme (Ministry of Education 2003)

Nadia L, Room 11 Nadia held Muffy at the Junior Assembly. Nadia is a kind, friendly, helpful member of Room 11. INTERSCHOOL HOCKEY TOURNAMENT

Year 5/6

It was a crispy cold morning when our team, the Tahuna Voodoos, played our first game. We lost our first game as we were freezing, the next three games we drew 0-0, then the last three games we stepped up, fought for the ball and won. We are thankful to the parents and teachers that helped out making it possible for us to come and to our sensational side line support. - Sam, Lovinia and Rebecca

We were all nervous but excited to take our first steps onto the gleaming, frosty hockey pitch. Otis’ heart was thumping harder than a pump bottle. Our team was so proud to represent our school at the interschool hockey

tournament. We had a bit of a rough start but managed to tie our first game. However when Jed scored the first goal for our team we were stoked. In the end we won 2 games, drew 1 and lost 4. We improved because of Joy, our side line coach who gave us great advice. Thanks to Mrs Beyer-Rieger, Mrs Burrows and the parents who took us.
