Spotlight JCI!

Come cheer on your Area team at the JCI World Congress game show! Make sure to bring your JCI noisemakers to show your spirit for knowledge and change! See you Thursday at 09:00 in the Auditorium!

Give the Honor of a JCI Senatorship Is there a member of your JCI Local Organization who deserves recognition and appreciation for their distinguished service and commitment to JCI? Nominate them for a Senatorship today. Come to the JCI Secretariat on the 10th Floor the JCI Sales Booth to fill out an application.

Focusing on the first stage of community development, health and wellness, delegates gathered in the Sky Lounge for some interactive fun using the JCI Active Citizen Framework. Following an ice breaker challenging the participants to think about their needs and how to help each other, the delegates were ready to start learning.

Past JCI President Lars Hajslund started with a lively introduction, explaining the workshops’ objectives and

motivating participants toward solving community problems with the JCI Active Citizen Framework. Using the road map for creating positive change, delegates discovered ways to address health and wellness through concrete examples and hands-on activities.

Since healthy people are fundamental to building a successful society, it is vital that JCI members take action and provide communities a strong base for future development. Special guest speaker Chris Helfrich, Director of the UN Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign, elaborated on this point by discussing the effects of malaria on a community. Keeping poor countries in poverty, malaria costs Africa about US $12 billion in lost productivity and consumes 40% of the continent’s public health resources. This is why protecting citizens from malaria is such an important part of creating positive change.

After his presentation, participants split up into groups by Area and started to brainstorm a health problem in their own community. Filling out a series of worksheets, members discussed methods of community engagement and how each way would add value to projects. From conducting surveys to hosting a town hall meeting, delegates decided which method was the most beneficial.

After creative thinking and constructive conversation, each group presented their project focused on their needs analysis process. The presentations were very informative and the groups showed a strong grasp of the concept, sharing unique, applicable ideas. Following the presentations, attendees watched a video highlighting local JCI projects from Uruguay, Paraguay and Suriname. Seeing these successful projects inspired the participants to take their ideas back to their own communities.

With the tools to find the most pressing needs and challenges at home, delegates will return on Wednesday to learn more about taking action to keep the positive change alive, both locally and around the world.

Discovering Needs and Delivering ResultsThe first JCI Active Citizen FrameWorkshop was held yesterday and provided an exciting way for delegates to brainstorm new projects.

Hosts Bonnie Thomas and JCI Vice President Michael Rivera started off the show discussing the passion shared by all JCI members for creating impact through targeted community projects before introducing a special guest.

Speaking about his experiences both in and outside of JCI, 2007 JCI

President Scott Greenlee explained the importance of inspiring others to find creative solutions to local problems.

“Inspiration is key-remember how you felt, remember why you joined JCI and share that passion with another young person.”

Following his presentation, Vice President Rivera posed a few questions about how JCI members can best harness their passion and turn it into concrete actions.

The hosts then pumped up the crowd with a game called “Find your t’Issues,” where competitors tried to be the first to pull all the tissues out of a box, simulating the process of getting to the root of your community’s issues. Two members from each area linked arms and pulled the tissues together, emphasizing teamwork. Omar Alkhaimi from JCI Damascus and Angel Kgokolo from JCI South Arica were the first to reach the bottom of their boxes, winning the challenge and a ten percent discount to the JCI Sales booth in the Grand Hotel.

During Today in Taipei, delegates then quickly guessed the day’s upcoming activities from clues in the form of images. JCI members were then treated to the first of three Deliver the Difference video contest winners. The video focused on JCI Medan in Indonesia, where members started a groundbreaking project to help orphans abandoned in airports go on to live fulfilling, productive lives.

The show continued with the JCI Morning Show Raffle, where members caught a glimpse of some of the newest JCI Sales products and had the chance to win a JCI Duffel Bag, JCI Backpack and a free registration to a 2013 JCI Area Conference.

Chris Helfrich from the UN Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign stopped by shortly before the show’s conclusion to invite members to stop by the JCI Active Citizen FrameWorkshop to simulate the development of a project to address Health and Wellness.

The JCI Morning Show will continue in the Grand Ballroom this morning and tomorrow at 9:00, so be sure to attend for your chance to learn some new skills, hear from powerful speakers and for an opportunity to participate in fun games and win prizes!

Inspiring Action at the JCI Morning ShowFocusing on why JCI members take initiative to bring change to their communities, the first JCI Morning Show of the 2012 World Congress kicked off the day’s activities.

For the first time ever, the JCI Vice President Candidates have their own caucus, separate from the JCI Executive Vice President and President Candidates Caucus happening today. Yesterday’s Vice President Candidates Presentation and Caucus gathered all 16 individuals running for the position of JCI Vice President for 2013.

The Candidates for Vice President first introduced themselves and discussed their goals and dreams for the direction of JCI in 2013. After presenting his or her ideas and actions to advance the JCI Mission, each candidate received two minutes to answer a question posed by moderator 2012 Executive Vice President for Europe John Weber. Among other questions posed, candidates were asked to address the UN Millennium Development Goals and how these eight, time bound goals will help JCI grow and interact within its communities in the upcoming year.

After this group interview session, the Candidates took questions from the audience, further stating their passion and dedication to global change. Vice President Candidates will be elected tomorrow at General Assembly, so don’t miss your chance to see who will steer the future of JCI.

The first General Assembly meeting of the 2012 JCI World Congress in Taipei began with the recitation of the JCI Creed, JCI Mission and an inspiring invocation. President Bertolt Daems began the meeting by welcoming everyone and thanking them for a wonderful year of turning their passion into action through the creation of innovative community projects.

Following a review of 2012 JCI World Congress assignments and presentations by JCI World Headquarters, Congress Director Chris Chen and 2012 JCI Executive Boardmembers, President Daems invited a special guest to the podium. Rona Yircali, Chairman of the International Chambers of Commerce – World Chambers Federation explained the importance of global partnership and collaboration on vital world issues.

“Over the years, ICC and JCI have developed an extensive partnership. I would like to mention that my friend Edson Kodama was a very important and effective part of this cooperation, serving as a bridge between our organizations.”

The General Assembly continued with a report by President Daems of the screening committee tasked with selecting the JCI Secretary General, starting in 2014. After thanking JCI Executive Director Arrey Obenson, the screening committee and current JCI Secretary General Edson A. Kodama, President Daems formally appointed former JCI Executive Vice President Dennis Cunanan. The news was greeted by great enthusiasm as members look forward to continued progress to advance the JCI Mission and Vision with Secretary General Cunanan.

Following the recognition of foundation donors, a discussion of policy amendments and the JCI Awards system, delegates departed for European night to celebrate the exciting events of the day.
