Overall outlookAs one of Asia’s developed economies, Taiwan continues to grow at a conservative pace, as has been the case for the past decade. That said, the economy is growing: with faster than expected growth in Q4 2017. With some sectors relatively flat or in some cases contracting, others are growing extremely quickly, and are very active from a hiring perspective. Michael Page experienced a steady increase in hiring throughout 2017, and expects that this to continue through 2018.
Taiwan’s biggest growth sectors face hot competition for talent

“In 2017 we experienced an upward trend in talent acquisition which we expect to continue in 2018. With talent often in short supply for our fastest-growth sectors, there has been intense competition for talent from companies within Taiwan and heightened competition coming from companies on the Mainland targeting the Taiwanese talent pool. This level of competition makes the job of HR managers more challenging and whilst companies should have a strong talent acquisition plan they should make sure that they get their retention strategies right first.”

Five key trends• The software, IoT and Semiconductor industries are expected to see
strong growth in 2018. Talent is short in these sectors and more competition is expected between employers for skilled candidates, with higher than average salary increases to attract new talent.
• Renewable energy remains high on the agenda for the Taiwan government. Domestic businesses are investing in this sector, with a number of international companies entering the market. There is also private equity and venture capital investment in this sector, with expected demand for talent pegged for continued growth.
• Healthcare remains buoyant, with a strong government commitment to provide first class healthcare to residents. While this market is well-established, there continues to be movement of international firms into Taiwan. Salaries are rising quite significantly too, due to short talent supply and tough competition. Market access has grown to a relatively mature stage, with experienced talent in high demand.
• Digital remains a high growth area of the job market, with demand coming from both progressive technology-driven companies and from more traditional industries. Savvy digital marketers are in demand, as are more technical digital roles such as Mobile Application Developers, User Interface / User Experience (UI /UX) Designers, as well as Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Engineers.
