People United has just published a report entitled, ‘Arts & Kindness’, suggesting that active engagement in the arts encourages acts of altruism. I know this to be true, particularly when I see young people from different backgrounds collaborating on creative projects.
As we enter 2013 Take Art has lots of reasons to
smile. Despite a challenging period of funding cuts
and increased competition for pots of money, it
seems we have now turned a funding corner with
good news from Interreg, Youth Music, Compact,
Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and the Lloyds TSB
Foundation triggering four new projects. The
projects, DanSCe Dialogues 2, My Tunes, Arts &
Education Network and Word/Play, are all in their
exciting initial stages and keeping the Take Art
team busy and buzzing. You can read all about
them in the following pages.
We are also looking forward to the new Live rural
touring season, with 11 fantastic companies and 38
performances taking place across Somerset from
January through to April. All the Live, Dance and
Early Years shows are featured in this brochure, so
you can have a read and make your top seasonal
choices. I, of course, will be going to them all!
Our Don’t Take Art Away fundraising campaign
has also started to bear fruit and we are rapidly
approaching the £5,000 marker. Find out how you
can help us to get to £10,000 on page 4.
As this new phase in Take Art’s life gets underway,
we have lots of exciting work to be getting on with
and even more new projects on the horizon. In the
meantime Take Art has much to appreciate and we
hope that in our own creative way, we add to the
stock of kindness in the world.

From our hub in South Petherton we run one of the UK’s most celebrated rural touring schemes, along with services in dance, theatre, music and early years creativity.

So thank you, thank you, thank you!

Amadou Diagne with Griselda Sanderson In Concert
Soulful and bluesy songs to make your heart sing
Amadou sings and plays guitar soulfully, with an honest intensity and bluesy edge, reflecting on the joys and hardships of life. He sings in English, French and Wolof, the language of his homeland Senegal in West Africa, where he was born into a large Griot family of Sabar drummers. His voice has a deep, breathy tone, then soars into a plaintive falsetto.
Recently signed by World Music Network his debut solo album rose straight up the European World Music charts in Feb 2012. He has played percussion for some of the world’s greatest musicians including Youssou N’Dour, Cesaria Evora and Jimmy Cliff.
Griselda Sanderson is a fiddle and nyckelharpa (Swedish keyed fiddle) player originally from Clackmannanshire in Scotland. Her album Harpaphonics was listed in the top 10 best world music albums of 2009 by The Sunday Times.
“Together this talented pair of musicians weave like swooping swallows to create an intimate evening of music.” Sarah Peterkin

Seven Ages Kepow Theatre
Comedy for all ages
Following a great tour to Somerset before Christmas, we are thrilled that Kepow are back with us, joyfully investigating the seven stages of life as proffered by Shakespeare, the world’s most famous bard.
From infancy, through love and wisdom to growing old disgracefully, Seven Ages seeks to explore two of the most important questions in existence, ‘why am I here and what’s important in my life?’
Essentially a comedy, with touching moments, Seven Ages premiered at Edinburgh Festival 2010, earned 5 star reviews, had a sell-out run and then transferred to London’s West End, receiving a standing ovation on the last night.
“Heart warming comedy-theatre that all the family can, and certainly will, enjoy!” Evening Standard

Whose Story is it Anyway? Kepow Theatre
Improvised comedy theatre for kids
Whose Story is it Anyway? is a comedy theatre show celebrating the power of the imagination, guaranteed to make children (and adults) fall about laughing. Starring Kevin Tomlinson and Abi Hood (The Bill, ITV), Kepow take suggestions from their young audience, adapt well-known stories and improvise live scenes. So if you want to know what happened when Harry Potter discovered he had a twin called Larry? Or when Charlie built his own Chocolate Factory… now you can find out.
Kepow are one of the UK’s funniest, most creative theatre companies, who have imagined and created this improvised theatre show just for kids. The show is suitable for 5-11 yr olds but has lots of laughs and humour for the adults.

Moscow Drug Club In Concert
Gypsy Swing Music Cabaret Style
Moscow Drug Club is a curious musical place
where certain elements of 1930’s Berlin Cabaret,
Hot Club de France, Nuevo Tango & Gypsy
Campfire converge. They then have a few to drink,
stagger arm in arm into the darkness of some
eastern European cobbled street and find the bar
where Django Reinhardt & Tom Waits are having an
after hours jam with the local Tziganes.
Combining their original material with songs by the
likes of Jaques Brel, Leornard Cohen, Tom Waits
& Bertolt Brecht, Moscow Drug Club provide an
intoxicating & intimate musical experience, quite
unlike what you’d expect to find in a village hall. So
you are cordially invited to share a wry smile with
us, as you enter the darkly comic world of Moscow
Drug Club... this way please and mind the stairs!

Mazymeg and the Honeybees Angel Heart Theatre
“There’s piskies up to Dartymoor, an’ tidden gude you zay there ain’t”
Angel Heart are masters of puppet theatre, continually pushing the boundaries of storytelling with their ingenious sets, stunning puppets and fantasmagorical adventures.
Their latest show, Mazymeg and the Honeybees, is set on Dartmoor, a mysterious land where nothing is as it seems. It follows the story of Albert and his beloved honeybees, stolen by a mysterious stranger, Dark Dewer, the wicked wizard. Fortunately a little Pisky called Mazymeg promises to find Albert’s bees, for she knows the stranger’s true identity.
Weaving threads of Devon folklore, beautiful characters, an original soundtrack by Dartmoor musicians and shape-shifting puppetry, this is Angel Heart’s most enchanted show yet.

The Amazing Adventures of Pinocchio Strangeface Theatre
Hilarious scrapes from the original puppet in a pickle
Based on the beloved original story by Carlo
Collodi, award-winning theatre company
Strangeface bring an extraordinary mix of masks,
puppets and live music to this tale of wild mischief
and temptation. In a style closer to Roald Dahl than
Walt Disney, The Amazing Adventures of Pinocchio
takes us on a fantastical journey from Pinocchio’s
first moments as a talking log, through his scrapes
with fairies, adventures with nefarious rascals Fox
and Cat, a sinister puppet-master and a trip to the
Land of Toys.
In turns thrilling and heart-warming, moving and
comical, the company brings an inimitable magic to
a masterpiece of surreal fantasy.
Strangeface toured Somerset three years ago and
ever since, people have been begging us to bring
them back. So now is your chance to see this
wonderfully imaginative company, as they bring a
well-loved story to life in a completely new way.
A brilliant February treat for all the family.

Gordon Giltrap In Concert
One of the most innovative acoustic guitarists in the UK
Gordon Giltrap has developed his own unique style, much copied, but never bettered. It is impossible not to be awestruck as he coaxes incredible melodies from his instruments; you almost suspect a second pair of hands.
With over 40 years in the business, Gordon is well known for his collaborations with other artists and his work for both the BBC and commercial television. His composition Heartsong is instantly recognised as the theme for the holiday programme. Gordon continues to compose and record new material with his recent album Shining Morn released in 2010 to critical acclaim.
In concert he will delight fans with his well-loved hits, as well as explaining the history of his many different guitars. Be prepared for beautiful compositions that cross all musical genres, wit, charm and unbelievable talent.
“Gordon Giltrap is one of an elite few who truly have become legendary in their fi eld in their own lifetime. I am proud to call him my friend”. Brian May (Queen)

David Copperfield Mad Dogs & Englishmen
Take care of him. He bites.
A child born towards the small hours on a Friday night is destined to be unlucky in life. Replete with comic, cruel and repugnant characters, Dickens’s semi-autobiographical novel follows a vulnerable boy on his journey to manhood. It is a story of the struggle against poverty and obscurity; a story of loss, of loneliness and the betrayal of innocence.
Dickens’s favourite novel is brought to stage with all its dark comedy by Mad Dogs & Englishmen in this fast-paced and faithful adaptation. The talented cast of two, capture the hilarity and pathos of Dickens’s writing with finesse, depth and ingenious dexterity in this compulsive piece of theatre.
“Of all my books, I like this the best... Like many fond parents, I have in my heart of hearts a favourite child. And his name is David Copperfield.” Charles Dickens

The Three Billy Pigs Noisy Oyster
Once upon a time there were three little pigs...
The Three Billy Pigs is a new family theatre show from Noisy Oyster for children of three years and over. The show blends two classic fairy tales The Three Little Pigs and The Three Billy Goats Gruff with beautifully crafted puppets, light hearted story telling, live music and a little bit of eco-awareness in pig stylie.
Brought to life by Sarah Rowland-Barker and Nik Palmer of Noisy Oyster, definitely one of our favourite local puppet theatre companies. Now based in Frome, Sarah has a background in classical dance, street theatre and circus with No Fit State. Nik Palmer is an award winning puppeteer and musician and the son of Ray & Joan DaSilva, who founded the wonderful Norwich Puppet Theatre.
The Three Billy Pigs is a hugely inventive and delightful show that is guaranteed to appeal as much to a nine year old as it will to the youngest audience members.

CountryBoy’s Struggle Contact
One man’s search for belonging
Mixing hip-hop with physical comedy and spoken word, Maxwell Golden plays over forty characters in this fast, funny and honest one-man show about a young MC’s journey to the big city from his rural routes.
CountryBoy’s Struggle depicts the frustration of a young man seeking to transcend the limitations of living in rural England. Travelling from birth to boyhood, to adolescence, and finally to the odd jobs and odd temptations of London, where ‘CountryBoy MC’ Michael must find the right way to exist in the city, for his community and himself.
Maxwell Golden is a fantastic artist with a background in hip-hop and spoken word but also in clowning and physical theatre. He brings together all these elements to tell a vital story
about a young man and his journey. We hope it will engage young people from rural areas to start creating their own expression.
“This is just great! Life-affirming; beautifully performed; funny; and inventive. A complete pleasure to watch, some proper entertainment, with energy, wit and enthusiasm.” Audience Member in Edinburgh

In Praise of Elephants Farnham Maltings
A glorious celebration of the greatest animals on the planet
In 34 Mimosa Crescent Aubrey is pressing down
hard with his elephant-shaped cookie cutter. Even
though he has never been to Africa, he knows all
about the huge, lumbering beasts far away.
In Praise of Elephants is a glorious celebration
of the greatest animals on the planet. It is also a
touching story of a man turning 60, who has an
incredible memory, the sweetest character, and
whose life is about to be turned upside down.
For once the perfectly-baked biscuits are removed
from the oven, Aubrey must follow his instinct,
cross mountains, face unknown dangers, and
make the journey of his life.
In Praise of Elephants is a surprising and striking
piece of theatre from the genius of Farnham
Maltings. It is a story with biscuits that you’ll never
forget; a charming, delicate play about dignity and
how the world will be a poorer place when some
things, some animals and some people are gone.

Brand New Seed Fund for 2012/13
Here at Take Art we know that a little bit of funding at the crucial moment can make all the difference to those artists starting a new project or a new career. It can help grow ideas, fund research and development, allow space for rehearsals and time for writing. It can pay for marketing or costumes, or make possible vital training.

Jan-June 2013 | Take Art 18
Commissioned by Farnham Maltings and Arts Partnership, Surrey in association with Take Art, Rock Pool has been designed and created especially for very young children, with a focus on inspiring new audiences.
The ‘Sprout Commission’ was set up in 2012 and was open to everyone from individual artists, to new collaborators, to established companies and to people new to making work for this age group.
Theatre company Inspector Sands, who won the commission, will initially tour their show across Surrey and Somerset in March.
Keep an eye on our website www.takeart.org to find out where you can see the show and for more Early Years theatre opportunities.
Peel back your ears and slip on your flippers as Take Art bashes out a big drum roll for Rock Pool, an exciting new Early Years theatre commission from the award-winning company Inspector Sands.
Rock Pool is a brand new show designed especially for under 5s, set at sea and partially underwater. It begins as all good adventures do, by whipping up a storm; a storm so powerful it leaves two very different creatures stranded in an isolated rock pool, far from the open water. As their little pool starts to drain away, Prawn and Crab don’t have long to find a way of getting home.
Set to tour Somerset Children’s Centres in early March 2013, Rock Pool is a funny, tender, exuberant piece of theatre, containing loud music and plenty of splashy dancing.

Kindling
Kindling is Take Art’s Early Years creativity development programme, funded by the Arts Council England to be the first point of contact in Somerset. It was set up to increase the breadth and awareness of Early Years creativity in the county and share best practice throughout the UK.
Kindling also offers training and signposting for artists, practitioners and arts organisations. It delivers a regular programme of cross art form workshops and courses with partners like Somerset Centre for Intergrated Learning, Forest Schools, Children’s Centres and arts organisations in Somerset and beyond.
We are currently working on a number of projects and ideas to bring more music, dance, theatre, digital and visual arts into nurseries, pre-schools and Children’s Centres. In 2013 we are also hoping to offer creative training, workshops and opportunities to Somerset childminders.

Spot La Baracca
Early Years theatre from Italy
From experience we know that sometimes the simplest ideas inspire the most excitement in our Early Years audiences, especially when moving lights, shifting colours and interactive play are involved.
So we know Somerset under 5s are going to love Spot because ‘Spot’ is a very special stage light. A light that shines and expresses himself, draws shapes and colours, illuminates the sun in the yellow, the sea in the blue and the big wide sky in the lightest of brightest blues.

Over the last two years, the Life Circles team has
been working with the fragile elderly in eight care
settings across the South West, using dance and
creativity as a way to increase mental health and
wellbeing. It’s been a fantastic project and we have
learned a great deal, so what better way to share
our experiences and what works best and why,
than over a number of training sessions.
All three sessions cost £25 each (a bargain
considering you also get lunch and refreshments).
Please wear clothes you can move in and bring
a folder for handouts and notes.

Professional Dance Artists
If you are a dance artist living or working in Somerset and want support or advice, you can contact the Director of our Professional Dance Programme, Cath James. Cath offers mentoring, advice surgeries, and can signpost you to the best opportunities in the region.
If you want to develop your practice, open professional level contemporary dance classes are held each Monday night at Bridgwater College, supported by the Somerset Dance Graduates. Classes are open to anyone who wants to cultivate their technique and increase their networking opportunities. They run from 7.15pm-8.45pm and cost £3 a session.
Take Art will also be running a two-year dance development programme, DanSCe Dialogues 2 (see page 24), which will provide plenty of opportunities for artists to take part in exciting and valuable creative experiences.

Spring Forward is all about young people coming together to dance on a professional stage and to watch and be inspired by their peers.
Hundreds and hundreds of dancers, from youth
dance companies, school groups and local dance
groups, travelling from all over Somerset and the
South West to be part of an annual extravaganza
that has grown so big, we are now running it over
four nights and two venues.
2013 will be the ninth year of Spring Forward and
this time there will be three March performance
nights at the Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre in Taunton
and one performance night in May at The Octagon
Theatre in Yeovil. We anticipate that over 400
young people will be involved from over 30
different dance groups.

As part of this fantastic new international project, eight French and English partners will be working together on a two-year Cross-Channel programme, offering a unique range of opportunities, exchanges, training and performances for dance artists, choreographers and companies in Normandy and Brittany and in Southern England.
Having been successful in our bid to the European fund INTERREG, DanSCe Dialogues 2 will start in Spring 2013 and run until October 31 2014.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PROJECT WILL INCLUDE:
> The bringing together of touring professionals, promoters and artists from the UK and France, developing Cross-Channel exchanges that will support future Anglo/French collaborations.
> An exchange of master-classes, giving UK- based artists the opportunity to learn from international choreographers and teachers; and to then disseminate their learning in France.
> Residencies allowing international artists to make and premiere their work in the UK and for UK-based artists to develop work in France.
Look out for events and opportunities marked with the DanSCe Dialogue 2 logo throughout the next two years.

My TunesMusic the great leveller…
Music is a powerful tool, it is relatable, cultural,
cutting edge and real, while at the same time
being wholly magical and emotionally liberating.
It is a language that breaks through social
division and reaches into people’s homes,
cars, ears and hearts.
My Tunes is a new project from Take Art and
Actiontrack that aims to utilise the levelling
power of music by taking it into challenging
places; working with some of the most isolated
and disadvantaged young people in the county,
in the belief that music will have a positive
impact on their lives and futures.
Starting in the winter of 2012/13, this 18-month
programme will reach over a 100 young people
across Somerset’s Pupil Referral Units (PRUs).
It will launch with a series of taster sessions
where we will get to know the participants and
demonstrate how the My Tunes project might be
relevant to the world they inhabit.
The taster sessions will be followed with a
more in-depth programme of music making
workshops for participants that will involve
recording, as well as writing and performing
their own music.
Due to the importance of this work, the project
has received nearly £50,000 funding from Youth
Music and a further £10,000 from the PRU
management team.
Updates from the project will be made available
at www.takeart.org
