A Beautiful Fall day brought out a bevy of clever
costumes and a lot of good riding. It was ICC’s
biggest and last show of the year. Nearly 40
rides came under the scrutiny of Judge Kate
Shuster who awarded a number of scores
eclipsing the 70% mark.
There were no prizes awarded for costumes, but
that was probably a good thing in that it would
have been hard to
choose. A duo
straight from the
operating room,
complete in
scrubs, masks,
and bloody
drapes held
together by
forceps executed
fine training level
tests with surgical
precision.

Halloween Show Enjoyed By All In other classes, colorful garden insects buzzed
through their required movements.
The biggest cheer of the day went up following
the last ride of the day. Tom Pavlich, cleverly
disguised in his cowboy costume, halted at “X”,
saluted the judge and then executed two perfect
reining spins atop his mount Smart Chicadero.
Tom garnered the two top spots in ICC’s
inaugural Western Dressage class. It was not
clear at press time whether or not the chapter
would offer the class again at its next show.

Southern Junior Young Rider
Championships
September 13 -15, Del Mar By: Sarah Mosqueda TC Staff Writer
This year’s Southern Junior Championships were
held at the Del Mar Fair Grounds in Del Mar, Ca.
The weather was a wonderful change for both
rider and horse as we left our 100 degree plus
climate to enjoy the mild weather of Del Mar.
The Junior Championships consists of both the
traditional championship classes that riders have
to qualify for throughout the year and a team
championship made up of a team of riders that
compete in two dressage classes, an equitation
class and a dressage theory exam.
Many riders who have qualified for
championships choose to enter the team

Chair Message:
Greetings All -
Lots of things happening in Inland Commu-
nities Chapter!
1) Ballots for the 2013 Board of Directors
for ICC have been sent out to each ICC
member on file with CDS. Vote as directed
on the ballot, fold the ballot "backward" so
the address is on the outside, tape the bal-
lot closed and affix a stamp. Ballots are due
by November 30.
Results will be announced at our December
5 no-host dinner and (brief, I promise!)
board meeting at Mi Cocina Mexican Res-
taurant, 27961 Highland Avenue, Highland.
We'll meet at 6 p.m. Everyone is invited,
and spouses or significant others are wel-
come.
2) The CDS Adult Amateur Clinic for 2013
features clinician Sabine Schut-Kery. Date
and place for the Southern Region clinic
haven't been finalized yet by CDS.
** The drawing for the ICC representative
and two alternates will take place at our an-
nual award banquet, Saturday, January 19,
place TBA. To enter the drawing, send an e
-mail to our chapter secretary Susan Wil-
liams ([email protected]) by
January 15, 2013. We will put the names in
a hat and draw the names at the banquet.
3) With Dusty Williams' superb computer
skills, we have postcards with our 2013
show schedule--you should have received a
card in the mail within the last month or so.
Three of the show dates are March 2
(judge, location TBD), May 11 (judge Laurie
Falvo Doyle, location TBD) and June 22
(judge Ulf Wadeborn, Shadow Ridge). The
October show date and location are not yet
finalized.
NOTE: For the 2013 ICC shows, we are adding
an office fee of $20 for any entry that is not
postmarked by the due date on the premium OR
for any entry that is incomplete--missing signa-
tures, no checks, no copy of CDS membership
card, etc. When times are called for the show,
you will be informed if you need to pay the office
fee in order to pick up your number.
Bottom line: It pays to fill out EVERYTHING
(both sides ;o) and double-check to make sure
everything is included and all spaces signed
when you submit your entry.
4) If you have any questions or comments,
please let me know.
Circle your calendars for 2013 for the
awards banquet (January 19) and the
shows listed above. And VOTE!!
I don't think I've forgotten anything, but if I have, I'll be sending out an email blast. (Lucky you ;o) See you soon. Kathy Young 760-953-8682 *cell

championships as a fun way to compete in a
group setting unlike any other show during the
year.
The riders were kept very busy throughout the
weekend. Friday started at noon with the
dressage theory exam for the teams, followed by
an equitation class and their first dressage test
for the team. Saturday was the second team test
and the first championship test for most riders
and Sunday was the final championship test and
the awards ceremony.
Our 2012 Junior Liaison, Samantha Burnett,
competed this year with Wes in the training level
championships and on team with three other
riders from another chapter. She finished third
individually winning a saddle pad at the awards
ceremony and her team also finished third after
all of the scores were combined.
The quality of horses at the junior show was
outstanding and it was really fun to watch all of
the juniors compete throughout the weekend. I
hope to see more of our ICC junior members
competing in 2013 and hopefully we can have an
ICC junior team competing together.

At Spirit Equestrian Center By: Sarah Mosqueda TC Staff Writer
This year CDS Club 100 hosted a clinic just for
Junior/Young Riders. Each chapter was able to
submit the name of one junior member. ICC ac-
cepted names and had a drawing to determine
the member that we would send to the clinic. Out
of five juniors who submitted their name, Kassidy
Kamiyama and her pony Star were the lucky pair
selected to attend this year’s event.
The clinic was held at Spirit Equestrian Center in
Somis, CA. This year’s clinician for Southern
California was Christiane Noelting. The clinic
started on Friday evening with a pizza party and
lecture. Each rider introduced themselves and
talked about their own riding goals and areas that
they felt they needed help with. Christiane went
over an equitation pyramid and related rider form
to the effectiveness of a rider as a whole. She
encouraged the young riders to think of their up-
per body as a see saw that could move forward
and back from the hip to be able to stay upright
and increase the efficiency of the half halt in all
gaits.
Saturday was a fun filled day of group lessons for
the participants. Most of the students were
paired in groups of two by their riding level and
what they hoped to gain from the clinic. All of the
students audited each others’ riding as well, so
that they could also learn from the ground as
Christiane worked with each student. The rider
and horse combinations ranged from training
level to fourth.
This was a wonderful experience for all of the
Junior and Young Riders that were selected to
participate in the clinic. We encourage all of our
ICC members to submit their name for next years
clinic in 2013.

NINES AND TENS (Sung to the tune of “Jingle Bells”)
By Susan Williams
Warming up at noon,
On a scorching summer’s day,
In a helmet and black wool,
Roasting all the way!
I could be at home,
Calm and clean and cool,
But it’s much more fun being with my horse,
Than relaxing by a pool!
(Chorus)
Oh, nine and tens, nines and tens,
An eight would be okay,
Oh what fun it would be to show in a shadbelly one
day,
Nines and tens, nines and tens
An eight would be okay,
Oh what fun it would be to show in a shadbelly one
day!
Working on my goals,
Learning all the moves,
Renvers, travers, shoulder-in,
Dressage is not for fools.
One level at a time,
Bronze medal, silver, gold,
My trainer says, “You will succeed,
Just do as you are told!”
(repeat chorus)
Bride’s Maid Again
ICC was one of only four chapters to decorate a box seat
at the CDS Championship Show at LAEC this past
October. And, as in years past, only Second Place was
garnered.
Many onlookers were mystified by the runner-up
placing. Under the brilliant guidance of Nancy Franklin,
Charlotte LeVecque, Susan Williams and Dusty
Williams toiled into the late evening hours erecting a
colorful autumn themed tribute to the Inland Empire.
The box was adorned in corn stalks, pumpkins,
mountains and orange crates along with orange, brown
and green table cloths, garland and lights. T-shirts and
orange crates were bedecked with custom designed
labels featuring horses, citrus and the ICC website.
First prize went to the Las Vegas Chapter which featured
a big lighted lucky horseshoe, pink flamingo and a giant
poker chip.
Chapter President, Kathy Young, was gracious in
accepting the Second Place prize but groused privately,
“We wuz robbed - and by a one-armed bandit no less!”
Stuff We Hear
A friend of TC’s placed in the very large Region 7
Second Level amateur championship class. USDF
had neglected to send the ribbons for that division,
so the winners rode their victory lap with blank
ribbons. They were told their ribbons would be
mailed to them. Several weeks later, our friend got
her ribbon…with the date 2011 printed on it!
Really????

High Society (Sophie)
A Promising Future?
Based on her and Sarah Lockman's stellar performance at the CDS Championships in October, High Society (aka Sophie) and Sarah were invited to the Scott Hassler clinic for promising 4, 5 and 6 year old horses that was to take place on December 1 at Flintridge. Unfortunately, weather has caused a rescheduling of the event. Although no date is yet set, the organizers are targeting May 2013. Stay tuned to this publication for updates. Scott is the US Young Horse coach. At her third horse show ever, High Society, ridden by Sarah, was reserve champion in the open CDS 4 y.o. futurity, reserve champion in the open USDF training level horse of the year class, and 3rd place in the open CDS training level horse of the year championship classes.

THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY
CDS Championship Show
Vol. 2012-4 Take Contact!
Page 12
By: Susan Williams TC Staff Writer
The CDS Championship Show was well-attended,
with over 300 horses and one charming mule. Oh
yeah, and a million gnats…wait, make that a gazillion.
The humid mornings and warm afternoons were ideal
for the infamous LAEC bugs. Ear bonnets were
allowed, but I never saw one on the plucky mule.
Well, maybe they just don’t make them big enough.
I know you all can’t wait to hear about the free food.
Every morning coffee and doughnuts were available
outside the show office, but you had to get there
before 8:30. I made it at 8:35 one morning. I got a
cup of sludge. With enough sugar and CoffeeMate,
not bad, and I stayed wired the rest of the day!
One day we got these cute cookies. Sweet little works
of art!
Since this was CDS’ 45th anniversary, on the last day
we had cake. Now you know that cake for a whole
bunch of people is going to be a big white sheet
cake…not too exciting, but I had to check it out
anyway. When I got to the show office patio, there
was indeed the requisite big white sheet cake, but next
to it was an empty box with a scum of chocolate
frosting. Darn it! A big chocolate sheet cake and I
missed it! Next time I’ll get my priorities straight…
cake first, then clean the bridle!
