VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR THERAPY SESSIONS TO HELP HEAD-INJURED BOY REACH FULL POTENTIAL

A former Evans Medical Group staff member and her husband are appealing to members of the UH community for help with a rehabilitation program for their son. Andrew Cuns, 18, was struck by a car as he was riding his bicycle home from work on Dec. 8, 1984. He sustained a severe brain injury that rendered him unconscious for several weeks.

After one year of surgery and hospitalization, Andrew is living at home in Randolph, Mass., and showing some signs of progress. However, for Cuns to achieve his full potential, he needs to undergo a comprehensive rehabilitation program. This program includes a routine called "patterning" that requires the- coordinated efforts of five people.

Volunteers are needed to guide Andrew's extremities, in imitation of the movement of a crawling baby. These volunteers need no special training, but should be able to spare an hour or more a day or a week.

These session should take place three times each day. Volunteers are needed for all sessions, especially for Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 to 11 a.m., and on Sundays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. For more information, please contact Petra Cuns at 986-8879.
