INSIDE OUT: My Story- Cllr Mrs Marion Brighton OBE, Council Leader NKDCWhen, over twenty years ago, others said to Cllr Mrs MarionBrighton and planning officer Clive Redshaw that you can't havean arts service without an arts building, their reaction was: ohyes you can; if we can't bring people to us to experience art,we'll take art to the people! Thus it was that artsNK was born.Cllr Brighton reflects on those days:"We realised that, because the area for which we were respon -sible was not economically significant in terms of manufactur -ing, we needed to turn to tourism to aid economic develop -ment. The idea we had was to create a team of 5 arts workers

who would go out into the towns and villages to give people arts experiences which they may not have hadbefore."

WELCOME INSIDE OUT

artsNK - Experience Great Art

Cllr Brighton has no doubt whatever about the value, which the arts bring to communities."Apart from the real economic advantages which they bring to the tourist industry, recessionary times arewhen people benefit most from activities which take them out of themselves and give them immenserewards for what is, relatively speaking, remarkably little cost."Understandably, artsNK is an organisation of which Cllr Brighton is justifiably proud, but their worth is meas-urable against objective criteria too."artsNK, by going out into communities as they have done and continue to do, have gained so much experi -ence in working with those communities, that I really feel that they know what people want; they are verymuch in touch with them. I think it's an enormous honour to think that artsNK has been asked to be the leadorganisation in a project which is going to deliver the exciting and innovative arts programme 'Transported'in the districts of Boston and South Holland."Nearer home, Cllr Brighton also reflects on artsNK's success in gaining funding for developing festivals in NK:"We have had enormous success with the Festivals that have taken place in the District. The Safire Festivalof 2011 was a particular favourite of mine: it was so ambitious and impressive, and enormously popular."Does Cllr Brighton have any other favourite artworks or projects?"Perhaps I should conclude by acknowledging the beauty of the stained glass window here in the counciloffices - a daily reminder of how far we've come since those early times!"To read the full interview, go to:
