“The West Bend School District drew its first state school money, twenty-two dollars, in 1846.In the summer of 1847, Miss Cynthia Simon taught the first term in an improvised shanty which stood just north of the present school house site. A year later, a frame building was erected on the same spot, and Wm. Ramsey was employed as teacher. As early as 1857 two teachers were employed, and by 1861 it became necessary to erect another school. After considerable discussion as to the location of the new building, the district split into north and south districts, the north district erecting a two story brick building, later known as the old north school house. The south district continued to use the frame building until the two districts reunited in 1866, at which time the old south brick building was erected.
- Since that time, among the more significant events in the development of the school district, may be mentioned the establishing of a free High School in 1887, the completion, in Feb. 1890, of the building now known as the grade building, the erection of the High School building in 1900, and the incorporation of Manual Training and Domestic Science departments in 1913.
- The High School graduated its first class in 1888. During the 28 years that have since elapsed, 421 alumni have completed their school work to assume the larger responsibilities of life. West Bend has just reason to be proud of her graduates. In the various industries, in business circles, and in the professions, her members take high rank. An examination of the alumni list indicates that the training and culture received in school has been an inspiration to broader culture, and to lives of greater usefulness. The Graduates Register, as here compiled, is conclusive proof that High School education is certainly worthwhile.”
