EASTER DAY
The Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ April 16, 2017
Morning Worship 11:00 AM
We gather this morning to celebrate the deepest, most important truth we
know—that in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God has
entered into our world to bring hope, healing, and new life. Jesus embodied
God’s unstoppable love so completely that he became a threat to nearly
everyone around him, and he was hung on a cross for refusing to
compromise or set limits on that love. Today the church proclaims that
death was not the last word for him, that God raised him to new life, and in
doing that has opened the possibility of healing and hope for everyone.
Easter promises that, as with the first disciples, we too can know this risen
Lord and can find our lives being filled with his life. So our celebration is
not simply about an event long ago, but about how the miracle of
resurrection can take place in us.

THE WORSHIP OF GOD
*Call to Worship
One: Alleluia! Christ is risen.
All: Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia!
One: Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
All: God has raised Jesus from the dead; giving us new life
and new hope.
One: God has claimed us as God’s own.
All: God has brought us out of darkness and made us light
to the world.
One: Alleluia! Christ is risen.
All: Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia!
* Hymn of Praise No. 234 Easter Hymn
“Christ The Lord Is Risen Today”
*Affirmation of Faith
One: Christians, what do we believe as Cumberland Presbyterians?
All: We believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and
earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried;
He descended to the grave. The third day He arose from the
dead. He ascended into heaven, where He shall sit at the right
hand of God the Father Almighty; from where He shall judge
the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy
universal church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of
sins, the resurrection of the body, and the everlasting life.
Amen.
*Gloria Patri Greatorex
Prayers of the People
The Lord’s Prayer (In Unison)
Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our
debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
Musical Response No. 821 (Choir & Congregation)
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Assurance of Pardon I John 1:9
If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and cleanse
us from all unrighteousness. Brothers and sisters, in Jesus Christ your sins are forgiven.

PRESENTATION OF GOD’S WORD
Anthem “Jesus Wept” Joe E. Parks
As He walked upon the hill outside the ancient city,
As He trod the path where thousands more had stepped;
Jesus saw Jerusalem with all its pain and suffering,
Then he wept—O how the Savior wept.
O the tears, the tears of Jesus,
O the grief that over Him now swept;
When He saw Jerusalem with all its pain and suffering,
Then He wept—O how the Savior wept.
If they only had the power to see what lay before them,
All the misery that from their eyes was kept;
Jesus looked through future years and saw the coming sorrow,
Then He wept—O how the Savior wept.
Anthem “In My Place” Joe E. Parks
Just outside Jerusalem, on a hill called Calvary,
Stood three crosses, stark and grim, one of these was meant for me.
But the Father from on high filled with mercy, love and grace-
Sent His Son to bleed and die in my place, in my place.
In my place He freely died, and in my place He was crucified;
Death and agony embraced in my place, in my place.
Just outside Jerusalem, noonday’s sun refused to shine;
In my place He stood condemned, Jesus Christ, my Lord divine.
For my sin and for my guilt, for my shame and my disgrace,
Jesus’ blood was freely spilt in my place, in my place.
Anthem “Proclaim The Message” Ricky Manalo
Have you heard the story we preach of Jesus Christ, who died upon the cross?
But on the first day of the week the angel did proclaim:
“Why do you seek your Savior? He is risen today!”
Proclaim the message: “Behold, the Savior’s risen!” Rejoice, again I say rejoice.
For on the last day we shall rise again and see the face of God. Rejoice, rejoice!
In the early moments of dawn the promise of the Lord had been fulfilled.
So in the rising of the sun our new life had begun.
Raise you voices in triumph, for the victory’s been won!
Children’s Message Marianne Sharp
*Easter Hymn Medley Congregation and Choir
“The Old Rugged Cross”
On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
the emblem of suffering and shame;
and I love that old cross, where the dearest and best
for a world of lost sinners was slain.
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
and exchange it some day for a crown.
“In The Garden”
I come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses;
and the voice I hear, falling on my ear, the Son of God discloses.
And he walks with me, and he talks with me, and he tells me I am his own,
and the joy we share, as we tarry there, none other has ever known.
“Because He Lives”
God sent his Son, they called him Jesus;
he came to love, heal and forgive.
He lived and died to buy my pardon;
an empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives.
Because he lives I can face tomorrow;
because he lives all fear is gone;
because I know he holds the future,
and life is worth the living just because he lives.
“He Lives”
I serve a risen Savior, he’s in the world today;
I know that he is living, whatever others say;
I see his hand of mercy. I hear his voice of cheer,
and just the time I need him he’s always near.
He lives, he lives, Christ Jesus lives today!
He walks with me and talks with me along life’s narrow way.
He live, he lives, salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know he lives? He lives within my heart.
“Christ Arose!”
Low in the grave he lay—Jesus my Savior,
waiting the coming day—Jesus my Lord!
Up from the grave he arose, with a mighty triumph o’er his foes;
he arose a victor from the dark domain,
and he lives forever with his saints to reign.
He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!
Death cannot keep his prey—Jesus my Savior,
he tore the bars away—Jesus my Lord!
Up from the grave he arose, with a mighty triumph o’er his foes;
he arose a victor from the dark domain,
and he lives forever with his saints to reign.
He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!
The Reading Of The Word
Old Testament Lesson Acts 10:34-43
“Peter at Cornelius’ House”
34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not
show favoritism 35 but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and
does what is right. 36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel,
announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of
all. 37 You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea,
beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached— 38 how God
anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went
around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil,
because God was with him.
39 “We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in
Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross, 40 but God raised
him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. 41 He was not
seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—
by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He
commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom
God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify
about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins
through his name.”
New Testament Lesson Romans 15:12-20
“Paul the Minister to the Gentiles”
15 Yet I have written you quite boldly on some points to remind you of them
again, because of the grace God gave me 16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus
to the Gentiles. He gave me the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of
God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God,
sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
17 Therefore I glory in Christ Jesus in my service to God. 18 I will not venture
to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me in
leading the Gentiles to obey God by what I have said and done— 19 by the
power of signs and wonders, through the power of the Spirit of God. So
from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the
gospel of Christ. 20 It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel
where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone
else’s foundation.
*Gospel Lesson John 20:1-18
“The Empty Tomb”
Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene
went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the
entrance. 2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the
one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and
we don’t know where they have put him!”
3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4 Both were running,
but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 He bent over
and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6 Then Simon
Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the
strips of linen lying there, 7 as well as the cloth that had been wrapped
around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the
linen. 8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went
inside. He saw and believed. 9 (They still did not understand from Scripture
that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) 10 Then the disciples went back to
where they were staying.
11 Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to
look into the tomb 12 and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body
had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. 13 They asked her,
“Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she
said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” 14 At this, she turned
around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.
15 He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking
for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him
away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.” 16 Jesus said to
her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!”
(which means “Teacher”). 17 Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have
not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I
am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”
18 Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the
Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.
Leader: This is the Word of God for the People of God.
People: Thanks be to God.
