Bee Season Facts and FunThis time of year the bees start buzzing about so we can have fruits, vegetables and flowers year after year.

FACTSBees in Southern California make their hives in boroughs, structures, irrigation vaults and hollow spaces. They do not create hanging hives similar to the ones seen in other parts of the country. Generally, when you see a large ball of bees in a tree, they are resting around their queen who is looking for a new home. These swarming bees will move on in 2 – 3 days.

When you see a stream of bees coming and going from a hole in the ground or a utility box (green, purple, concrete, etc.), they have most likely established a hive. When you see these hives, please call the Clubhouse at (949) 361-8466, day or night, to report the location (be as specific as possible). Photos are also a great way for staff to locate a reported hive; so, snap a photo and email it to one of the email addresses listed below the table of contents in this magazine.

FUNThe term “honeymoon” is derived from an old northern European custom in which newlyweds would consume a daily cup of mead, made with fermented honey, for a month.

When a bee finds a good source of nectar, it flies back to the hive and shows its friends where the nectar source is by doing a dance which positions the flower in relation to the sun and the hive. This is known as the ‘waggle dance.’

Honey stored in air-tight containers never spoils. Sealed honey vats found in King Tut’s tomb still contained edible honey, despite over 2,000 years spent beneath the sand.

Honey speeds the healing of open wounds and also combats infection.

Honeybees never sleep!

The honeybee’s wings stroke 11,400 times per minute, thus making their distinctive buzz.

Bees fly an average of 15 miles per hour.

You may have heard of the program Box Tops for Education™ or seen the labels on the household products you buy every day, but what is this program and how does it work? General Mills began Box Tops for Education in 1996 as a way

to help raise money for education. America’s schools have earned over $868 million in 22 years through Box Tops. You can be a part

of this program by purchasing any of the hundreds of selected household products that you already know and love. You probably have Box Tops in your home right now. Brands include: General Mills cereals, Ziploc®, Old El Paso™, Yoplait®, Nature Valley™, Annie’s®, SCOTT® paper products and many more. Start by purchasing select products from dozens of brands, clipping the $0.10 Box Top from the label, watching the collection grow and turn them in to your school. You can easily make a difference.

Schools use their Box Tops to help pay for field trips, assemblies, technology, playground equipment, new books and other expenses. They help pay for the events that keep kids excited about going to school, like 4th grade Gold Rush and 5th grade Olympic Day. If you are someone who wants to get involved but do not have elementary aged children at the house, use this as an opportunity to make a connection with a neighbor. Save up your Box Tops and give them to the kids on your street for their school. Box Tops are a great way to connect with the kids in the community for a good cause. How many can you collect this month? Start raising money to enrich the lives and enhance our children’s education experience. For additional information about this program and to find a complete list of brands and products that are a part of the program, visit www.BoxTops4Education.com.

VACATION TIMEWelcome summertime—a time when many will gather their family members and belongings for some new relaxing adventures we call vacation. As we leave our homes behind, do you ever wonder if you remembered to lock the doors and windows, and what about requesting to have a temporary hold from the newspaper being delivered? The City of San Clemente has a free service called RSVP Vacation Home Check. It’s members are volunteers who are assigned to support the San Clemente Police Services and provide services to the citizens of San Clemente. Approximately 35 men and women provide nearly 11,400 hours annually of support work as volunteers. If you contact them a couple of days before your departure and request a Vacation Home Check, they will: check the perimeter of your house ensuring that it is secure every day (windows and doors are locked), and they will pick up the newspaper or anything else left behind on your driveway that would suggest to a passerby that no one is home. If you would like to request a Vacation Home Check, call the RSVP office at (949) 361-8269.

Pool-Use RemindersAs you gather family and friends for a fun-filled day at the pool, remember that each residence is permitted a maximum of five (5) guests per day at the pool facilities. All pools are open for recreational use, although the lap pools are designated for lap swimmers. Please do not hang on the lane lines or swim across in front of lap swimmers.

Flotation Devices

Flotation devices will continue to be limited to U.S. Coast Guard-approved life preservers (PFDII). A life preserver is defined as a flotation device, which is marked “Coast Guard Approved.” This is normally a vest style available in a variety of sizes from infant to adult and may be purchased at many local sporting goods stores for about $30.

Who Is Watching the Water?

Pool monitors are scheduled at all Talega pools this summer. The primary functions of the pool monitors are to ensure the safety and well-being of Talega residents and guests and to enforce the TMC policies. We maintain a “SWIM AT YOUR OWN RISK” policy—parents are responsible for watching their children at all times. Summer pool monitor service begins in June and continues through September. Monitors are scheduled during the afternoon hours.

Successful Contamination Prevention: Safety Breaks

Pool monitors will be enforcing safety breaks. A safety break is a designated time for adults and children to use the restroom, get some drinking water and re-apply sunscreen. Safety breaks also help keep our pools open and accident free longer. This year there will be a 10-minute safety break during every hour. Only lap swimmers are exempt from the safety breaks. As a reminder, all children must wear rubber pants over their swim diaper. Rubber pants are provided free to residents. Stop by the TSAC office or talk to a pool monitor to get yours.

Water Toys

For safety reasons, only the following water toys are permitted at the pool facilities: blow-up beach balls, diving rings and similar diving toys, plastic masks and goggles. Foam noodles are not permitted as pieces of the styrofoam may break apart and become lodged in the circulation system. This is costly to repair and could result in pool closures while equipment is repaired and/or replaced.

This past year the membership was able to reduce pool closures by an awesome 42%. There were 12 closures in 2014, eight in 2015, six in 2016 and only five in 2017. Let’s keep dropping that number. Great job!

Red Flag

Look for the red flag outside of each

facility to indicate any pool closures due to unexpected reasons.

You may also call the pool hotline at

(949) 361-8466, ext. 105, for detailed information

about the pools.

Do You Have a Picture? If you have a favorite photo from a Talega event or community block party that you would like to share with us to potentially use for community flyers, website or for use in the TalegaToday magazine, then send it to Marcy Maulorico at [email protected].

Another awesome E-waste/Shred/Salvation Army event. This year the Talega community loaded a 30 ft. truck with more than 3,500 lbs. of computers, printers, TVs and other consumer electronic waste and an additional 350 lbs. of household batteries. The document shredding truck was 4/5 filled at 1:56 p.m. and the Salvation Army filled both bobtail trailers completely to the top by 1:48 p.m. They were able to send another truck to take the remainder of the items that kept coming in until about 2:25 p.m. Additionally, we understand that the Garage Sale was fairly successful for most participants. We look forward to hosting this again next year. A very special thank you to local Cub Scout Pack Pack #112 and Troop #724—Cub Master Desmond Daly and Assistant Corey Taylor with their Cubs Evan Hobgood, Giovanni Ramos, Brayden and Mason Clark, Ryan and Jake Starling, Alex Landie, and Griffin and Caden Taylor—for their volunteer efforts in directing traffic and all-around help.

You do not have to wait a year to dispose of household hazardous/universal waste such as: fluorescent bulbs, household batteries, old paint, electronics, TVs, cleaning products, pesticides, used motor oil, solvents, aerosols, pool chemicals and printer cartridges. CR&R at (877) 728-0446 to schedule a pick up. Also, CR&R will pick-up four (4) bulky items (chair, sofa, table, bed, etc.), four (4) times per year at no charge.

Medications should not be thrown in the trash, and never dumped down the drain or flushed in the toilet. Instead, all medications can be disposed at San Clemente Police Services office at 100 Avenida Presidio, Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Here’s to a cleaner, greener summer in Talega.
