“Passion x Purpose” has been carefully selectedas the theme for all YMTT projects this year. Allof us, the YMTT members, share the samevalue that every individual has gifts and talentsthat can make a lasting impact. However, onlya minority of people fully utilize those gifts andtalents to live up to their maximum potential.

We often talk about our careers, ourresponsibilities, and our duties. But, what aboutour purpose? Why do we do what we do? Inour everyday quest to strive for results inachieving our goals, perhaps we need to pause,ponder and think through questions like howhave our passion and interests evolved toshape our purpose? How do we connect to ourinterests? What pursuits would inspire and givemeaning to us? What impact would we like tomake on others?

Too often, people become managers becausedoing so is merely the next logical step in theircareer path. They mistakenly believe that beinga manager automatically makes them a leader.Far from that, being a leader is different frombeing a manager.

Nonetheless, many know what they want to getfrom the managerial position - a new challenge,more prestige, better pay etc, but have a vaguegrasp on what they hope to give and why theyare leading. Knowing why you want to leadprovides a profound well of energy to drawupon.

In line with the theme Passion x Purpose, webelieve that a leader needs to follow his/herpassion, leads with purpose, builds great teams,and strives for continued excellence in buildingsuccessful career.

In closing, we would like to share a quote byJohn C. Maxwell that “A great leader’s courageto fulfill his vision comes from passion, notposition.”

We wish all our Muslim friends a joyouscelebration, Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri andhappy holidays to all!

A Brief Engagement With Syed Azmi Alhabshi

A pharmacist by profession and a social advocate by passion, Syed AzmiAlhabshi is best known for his charitable work in communities ranging from thehomeless to cancer patients and refugees. He is also outstandingly passionateabout children and their welfare.

Kelvin, Mokhtar and PIAMSecretariat staff met up with SyedAzmi on 6 May 19 at Menara KEN,Taman Tun Dr Ismail, to get aglimpse into his charitable work andto know him better in person. SyedAzmi will be sharing the passion ofhis work at the upcoming YMTTbreakfast talk to be held on 27 Jun19, at the Multi Purpose Hall,Chubb Insurance.

5th YMTT Leadership Camp & CSR “Passion x Purpose”

On 26 & 27 Apr 19, PIAM YMTT organised itsfirst event of the year, the 5th LeadershipCamp & CSR.

The one-and-a-half-day event was held at theGrand Ion Delemen Hotel, Genting Highlands,attended by 52 young managers of the generalinsurance industry, at 6,000 feet above sealevel.

During the opening, PIAM CEO expressed hisappreciation to all the participants for theirpresence and YMTT for a well-organized event.

He hoped the participants find thetraining useful and beneficial to theirwork.

The full-day leadership training wasaimed at allowing participants todiscover insights into their talent andpassion in pursuing personaldevelopment including :-

• understanding the nature ofthe transition from being a greatindividual contributor to being aleader of others; and

• developing leadershipcapacity and be better prepared forthe critical transition into strategicleadership roles.

The core component ofthis program is sustainedpassion at work. Uponcompletion of thisprogram participantsgained betterunderstanding of thefactors which contributeto high employeeengagement andeffective strategies thatcan be implemented intoeach organisation.

The WHY Discovery

As simple as the WHYconcept is to understand,one of the biggestchallenges a team or anorganization faces is toclearly articulate itspurpose, cause or belief -its WHY. Participantslearned that without aclear articulation of theWHY, any intention canbe difficult to put intoaction and nearlyimpossible to scale.Finding the words fortheir WHY is the first stepin being able toeffectively communicateit.

Master Chef

Through the art of cooking, participants worked in teams to create their culinary showpieces in a timed event. Designed with loads of fun and action, teams learned goodcommunication, how to plan a task, co-operate as a group, and use creativity inutilising limited resources to succeed in their mission, viz to prepare edible tea breakfor all. Unleashing their cooking skills was not child’s play, as the meals prepared weretasted and judged by Master Chef of Grand Ion Delemen Hotel. The meals were wellprepared and received thumbs up from the Master Chef!

CSR Project – The Toy Story

30 children from Badan Amal Nur Zaharah(BANZ), Janda Baik were invited to join theyoung managers to complete YMTT CSRProject called “The Toy Story” on Day 2.Everybody worked hand-in-hand to preparecatapults, tool carriers, robots and bookshelves from planks and pieces of wood.Some even customised the finishedproducts further by putting up decorationsaccording to their creativity.

CSR Project – The Toy Story

After the exciting wood work session, the children were hosted to lunch and a simplebirthday celebration for children born in April, with a birthday cake courtesy from theHotel. They were thrilled to see the robots dance performance lined up by the Hotel. Therobots performed several dance routines and the synchronization was impressive.

PIAM has pledged a donation of RM3,000 to BANZ and the CSR project wrapped up withthe presentation of mock cheque by Kelvin Siah, YMTT Leader, and the children tookhome the toys they worked on and a goodie bag each.
