and read-alouds. Talia participates well in book group discussions of character,
setting, and plot. She enjoys making predictions and seeing the outcome as the story
unfolds. As a writer, Talia is attentive to letter formation, spelling, and spacing. She

Fall In social studies, second graders have been developing a deeper understanding of the
American holidays. Students are learning more about who Americans are and where
they came from. At the end of the trimester, students were engaged in a unit
focusing on Thanksgiving. Our class read Molly's Pilgrim, a story about a young,

Russian Jewish immigrant who felt that she didn't belong in America. The class
sympathized and empathized with Molly and gained a greater appreciation for all
Pilgrims in America as we shared stories from our own families. The story
encouraged dialogue and lively discussions on numerous topics including American
values, tolerance, religious freedom, Thanksgiving traditions, Jewish customs, and
holidays.

trimester that included counting strategies, working with ten, place value, comparing,

Fall Second Graders have been working on a variety of applications. The children love the app
named Diffy which means finding difference between numbers. The children have been testing
different numbers to see if the patterns change as each student tries entering the first four numbers
with the ranges given the starting. The children also have been working different forms of coding
on different apps. We will be adding more forms of coding as the year continues.

Fall Talia enjoys talking and playing in Ivrit. With a soft voice, and a smile on her face,
she enjoys participating in conversations. Talia decodes letters and nikkud (vowel
sound) to make the correct sound. She has strong reading stamina. When Talia
makes mistakes reading, she immediately self corrects. As she develops her reading
skills toward fluency, she is learning from reading. She uses reading strategies, such
as making connections and inferring, to aid comprehension. In writing, Talia
learned the script letters quickly, and soon after began using them in her regular

using pencil and then observed color changes in light and shadow while adding and then
blending Cray-pas oil pastels. Inspired by Claude Monet, students made two reflection
pictures. For the calm water reflection each student drew a scene on the top half of a
paper with pencil and Cray-pas, folded the paper and rubbed with a ruler to reveal the
mirror-like reflection. Some added paints or used colored pencils. The choppy water
reflection was made by painting directly with watercolors and trying out two techniques:
dry brush on the top half of the paper, and wet on wet for the reflection. At
Thanksgiving, an art project was integrated with science studies of solids, liquids, and
gas. Artists worked collaboratively in small groups to paint a big Turkey using ice
cubes (solid), water (liquid), noticing evaporation (gas) in the drying process. For
Hanukkah, artists made multi-colored dreidals using Sculpy clay and created stain glass
window like paintings by mixing oil pastels with cooking oil.
Second Grade Library Ms. Lori Kahn
Library
3Demonstrates good habits in handling library materials
3Participates by offering ideas and making connections
3Listens attentively to librarian and classmates
FallSecond grade started the school year by making connections with their summer reading book, Little Rhino. We then
embarked on a long and full exploration of the Russian fairy tale, Baba Yaga. Through an in-depth reading of four
different versions of this classic tale, the children noticed many similarities and differences. All of the tales portrayed the
character of Baba Yaga as being a horrible, nasty and mean witch who traveled in her mortar and pestle and lived in a
house with poultry legs. It wasn't until we read Patricia Polacco's version of this tale, Babushka Baba Yaga, that the
children saw the character in a new light. The expression, "Don't judge a book by its cover," rang very true in this tale as
Baba Yaga was portrayed as a very nice witch indeed. We used this book as a springboard to an author-illustrator study of
Patricia Polacco which will continue through the next sessions.
Second Grade Music Mrs. Eugenia Jain Gerstein

Hashanah and Thanksgiving assemblies. They sang while using hand motions and percussion
instruments. Students also learned to sing in a round, learning to match voices. This is challenging
because the songs have a sophisticated amount of text in both languages - Hebrew and English.
The main goal was for the students to develop their skills of memorization of lyrics.
Music appreciation - Students learned about the instruments of the orchestra by sections by
studying "Carnival of Animals" by Saint-Saens. This required them to listen to Saint-Saens music
and identify the various musical instruments, the expression, tempo, sound, and dynamics.
Students also learned about programming music -connecting the pieces with pictures "Carnival of
Animals."
Notation - Students are continuing to learn notes on the staff (treble clef) and the value of notes
(dotted notes). They played rhythm patterns on drums while using iPad applications for creating
rhythm patterns and reading rhythms with the Rhythm Lab application.
Second Grade Physical Education Mr. Matthew Baluch
Physical Education
4Participates in physical education activities
4Works cooperatively in groups
4Demonstrates good sportsmanship
3Demonstrates dexterity and coordination
4Follows physical education class rules appropriately
Fall During this first trimester, second graders worked on team building skills as well as
developing their skills in several sports. They completed soccer, football and hockey
with the focus on building and improving their individual skills through effort and team
work. Students are continuing to develop life-long skills such as cooperating with
others and following directions. Many have also learned that effort and learning from
mistakes will help to ensure success in athletics as well as in life.

Communicates data using a variety of methods
Fall Second grade scientists began the year with their first unit, "States of Matter". We started the unit
with a sentence, "Let's talk about something that really matter". The students' job was to discover
where the missing "s" was to go....at the end of "that"!). We explored solid matter ?and how it
keeps its shape unless an outside force acts upon it, and that even when its shape changes the
amount and composition of the matter does not change. We explored gas matter?, mostly in the
form of air. We moved air, we moved objects with air, and we experimented with materials that
moved through air. For liquid matter?, the students interacted and experimented with Mr. Steve's
"Water Collection". We observed and tested out many different "types" of water that were all the
same water, but each represented a different scientific principle of liquids depending on what was
added to the water, what shape container the water was in, or how the water moved within its
container. We also had many discussions on the methods that could be used to change matter,
either through physical or chemical changes, to either change the shape or consistency of the
matter (physical changes of matter, i.e. cutting up paper), or to change it into something new
entirely (chemical changes of matter, i.e. combining vinegar and baking soda to create carbon
dioxide).
